Tennessee football coach Josh Heupel confirmed wide receiver Cedric Tillman had surgery on his injured ankle, but did not rule him out for the LSU game. "Cedric did have surgery. It just gave him the opportunity to speed up the recovery process," Heupel said Monday at his weekly press conference. "We'll see where he's at . He was limited but moving around a little bit today. We'll continue to see how it unfolds this week and see where we're at." Last week, Heupel said he was "hopeful" that Tillman would "be available when we go down there" to LSU. On Monday, Heupel put conditions on that availability. "(Tillman) has got to be a functional player and play at the level that we expect him to and what he wants to play at too," Heupel said. Tillman suffered the injury in a win over Akron in Week 3. Without him, the Vols got career-best performances from Bru McCoy and Ramel Keyton in a 38-33 win over Florida. McCoy had 102 yards receiving and one TD. Keyton had 69 yards receiving, including a 43-yard catch in a 99-yard touchdown drive that turned the game. - Knoxville News Sentinel

Tennessee coach Josh Heupel isn't sure his team would have found a way a year ago to win a game where it fumbled twice and allowed a blocked punt. All in the second half. On the road. Against a program coming off a Power Five conference title. It's not l ast season. The 24th-ranked Volunteers may be maturing in front of their coach's eyes. The latest proof came in a draining 34-27 overtime victory over No. 17 Pitt on Saturday, a four-hour physical and emotional marathon that ended with Tennessee spilling onto the field in a mixture of joy and relief. "There's a certain level of maturity that we certainly didn't have last year at times," said Heupel, who is in his second season of trying to restore the Volunteers to relevancy in the SEC. "Our kids are wi lling to continue to compete. They handled the flows, the ups and downs of the game the right way."There were plenty of each to go around. The Volunteers (2-0) allowed a game-tying touchdown pass from Pitt backup quarterback Nick Patti with 2:23 t o go but regrouped to win it on a 28-yard lob from Hendon Hooker to Cedric Tillman on Tennessee's first possession of the extra period. The Volunteers' defense, which had been relentless over the final three-plus quarters following a slow start, did the rest. It used a third-down sack and the one last of a seemingly unending streak of quarterback pressures to force Patti to throw incomplete on fourth down to end it. - Tennessee/AP College Football

Cedric Tillman is already expecting added attention this season - "The best receivers in this conference get double-teamed or face the best corner. It's why my route running needs to be perfect," he said - and believes there are several candidates ready to step up and help, an opinion echoed by offensive coordinator Alex Golesh. "I think it will all kind of play itself out as it goes," Golesh said. "A year ago, Ced was a guy nobody knew about, and Velus was a guy nobody knew about, so I think it will ki nd of play itself out. Whether people will feel like they need to roll coverage his way or do something unique to take him away - obviously if it becomes a one-man show, that would be really hard offensively. "In this system, looking back over the years, it's kind of played itself out. We feel good with who is going to be opposite of him, whether that's with one guy or a group of guys. This is as deep as we've been in the slot, and there are a bunch of guys who have to prove something in that room, but it was that way a year ago."Tennessee's only receiver ever to assemble two 1,000-yard seasons was Joey Kent in 1995-96 with Peyton Manning as his quarterback. Tillman has the chance to match Kent this season, even with the added attention coming. "You've just got to go compete," Tillman said. "Through those first four games last year, I didn't have the best numbers, and I kind of took off in those last six or seven, so I'm not looking so much at the numbers as I am playing hard. "The numbers will come." - Chattanooga Times Free Press

Tennessee wide receiver Cedric Tillman flew under the radar in 2021 despite catching 64 passes for 1,081 yards and 12 touchdowns. From a production standpoint, he is the SEC's top returning wide receiver. But he is not just a possession guy, nor is his p roduction solely dependent upon Tennessee's explosive scheme. At 6-foot-3, Tillman has underrated speed and big-lay ability. Plus, there are few receivers nationally that are better at bringing down 50/50 balls than Tillman. He is not a burner, but he se emingly has all the traits an NFL executive would covet as an outside receiver. Another big year and he has serious first-round upside. - The Tennessean

Wide receiver Cedric Tillman had the best season of his career with 57 catches for 931 yards and nine TDs. He could declare for the NFL Draft or return to perhaps improve his stock. There's no indication that Tillman's decision will be tied to Hooker's a nnouncement. But it certainly doesn't hurt the chances that he'll come back. Returning to UT in 2022 without Hooker could've been risky for Tillman. Building chemistry with a new quarterback may have lessened Tillman's impact and dropped his draft stock. But with Hooker back, he can pick up where he left off this season. - Knoxville News Sentinel

Kodi Burns identified a physical attribute and a mental characteristic in Cedric Tillman when he joined the Tennessee football staff in February. The Vols wide receivers coach noted Tillman's big frame. He also identified that Tillman didn't have a whole lot of confidence. "Right now, I think he is starting to play more confident," Burns said Wednesday. "I think he is starting to play big." Tillman has played sparingly in his three seasons at Tennessee. The redshirt junior has made eight catches for 124 yards in 25 games with two starts. But he could be primed to break out under Josh Heupel's up-tempo system that Velus Jones Jr. has described as a wide receiver's dream. "I think he has has got a really good chance to be a really good player in this lea gue," Burns said. Tillman, who signed with the Vols in 2018 out of Las Vegas Bishop Gorman, gives Burns and Heupel a different option at wide receiver. He's not as flashy as Jones or Jalin Hyatt. He's not as shifty as Jimmy Calloway or JaVonta Payton. - Knoxville News Sentinel
