  12/20/21 - DE Trajan JeffcoatrSr/2024, Arkansas, 6-4, 266 (DS#19 DE) + More +

Missouri football's defensive line just got a boost for 2022 a day after National Signing Day. Starting defensive lineman Trajan Jeffcoat, who has 11 sacks across the past two seasons, announced Thursday he will return in 2022. The Columbia, South Carolina, native will play out his redshirt senior season in Columbia, Missouri. Jeffcoat recorded 32 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and five sacks during the 2021 regular season. He also hit opposing quarterbacks four times, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble. Jeffcoat also scored a touchdown, recovering a fumble after a strip-sack in the end zone against South Carolina. - Columbia Daily Tribune

Earlier this summer, former Tigers great Markus Golden anointed Jeffcoat the next star along Mizzou's once-vaunted D-line. "He's up next," the Arizona Cardinal tweeted. Now, Jeffcoat gets to fulfill the endorsement. He was MU's most productive edge rusher last year, finishing among SEC leaders with six sacks. In Wilks' new four-man front, Jeffcoat will be in his natural element with his hand on the ground and could become Mizzou's first player with double-digit sacks since Shane Ray and Golden eclipsed the mark in 2014. - Post-Dispatch

With a sudden and brief news release, Trajan Jeffcoat's college career nearly vanished two years ago. The Missouri defensive end, then a sophomore, was recovering from an elbow injury when just minutes before Mizzou's Oct. 5 kickoff against Troy, the school released a 36-word statement that ended Jeffcoat's season before it got started - and, it appeared, his Mizzou career. "Trajan Jeffcoat is not presently enrolled at Mizzou and will not be with the football team for the remainder of the season. In consideration of student privacy rights, we will not comment further on this matter." Jeffcoat, Tigers coach Barry Odom and school officials declined to discuss the matter. Sources later indicated his dismissal was a university decision and didn't come directly from the football program.

Skip forward nearly a year, and under a new coaching staff in a new season, Jeffcoat was the surprise addition of 2020. He re-enrolled at Mizzou last fall, rejoined the team under first-year coach Eli Drinkwitz and after missing more than a year of action, emerged as one of the Southeastern Conference's best pass rushers, earning first-team AP All-SEC honors. All of which begs the question: What can he do for an encore? "The sky is the limit," defensive line coach Jethro Franklin said. "We just need to get him going, to get him using that elbow and get him striking and shedding and running to the ball and playing with great effort and all that good stuff and then let the chips fall where they may. "He has the right attitude. He has the right mindset. He wants to do things right. As long as he brings those things to the party we're going to have a good time." - Post-Dispatch

After finishing in third place in the SEC East Division last season, Missouri was picked fourth in the division in the media's preseason poll by reporters who attended SEC media days this week in Hoover, Alabama. Georgia was the runaway favorite in the East with 124 of the 134 first-place votes, followed by Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. Defending national champion Alabama was the heavy favorite to win the West Division earning 130 first-place votes, followed by Texas A&M, Louisiana State, Ole Miss, Auburn, Arkansas and Mississippi State. Only two Missouri players landed on the preseason All-SEC teams: defensive end Trajan Jeffcoat was a second-team choice while center Mike Maietti made the third team. - Post-Dispatch

Missouri athletics announced this week its intention to welcome full-capacity crowds to Faurot Field for football games this coming fall, returning to a traditional game day atmosphere after a 2020 season altered by the coronavirus pandemic. Saturday's spring game will feel more like 2020 than 2021, however. Second-year coach Eli Drinkwitz and Missouri are set to host their annual spring game at 1 p.m. Saturday, going through a mix of skills, drills and scrimmage. The event will be held with a reduced fan capacity of 6,000, compared to the 62,621 seats Missouri hopes to have available starting with its season opener against Central Michigan on Sept. 4. - Columbia Daily Tribune

2020 ALL-SEC FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DL Trajan Jeffcoat, Missouri,...Jeffcoat earned first-team honors after a breakout season on the Tiger defensive line where he has produced 6.0 sacks, 18 tackles, seven QB hurries and one forced fumble. Jeffcoat's selection gives Mizzou defensive linemen back-to-back AP first-team honors after Jordan Elliott earned the distinction in 2019. Jeffcoat's 6.0 sacks rank second in the SEC and are the most by a Tiger defensive end since Charles Harris recorded 9.0 in 2016. He has produced a sack in six of Mizzou's 10 games this season, including one against Arkansas (Dec. 5), where he had a career-high five tackles. He also forced a fumble in Mizzou's win over Vanderbilt (Nov. 28). - Missouri Football
