Dante Stills arrived at WVU in 2018 after a blue-chip career just down the road at Fairmont Senior High School. Since joining the Mountaineers, he's played in all 47 games, starting 26 of them. He's taking advantage of the COVID-prompted free-eligibility year in 2020 to play a fifth year of college football. He's already racked up 19 career sacks (tied for sixth in school history) and 44 tackles for lost yardage (third most), and he figures to add to those numbers in 2022 after earning first-team all-Big 12 honors last season.

One thing neither Stills nor any of his Mountaineer teammates have ever done in their West Virginia careers, though, is line up against Pitt. That will change with the Sept. 1 renewal of the Backyard Brawl after a hiatus of more than a decade. "I've been waiting on this my whole life," said Stills of his opportunity to participate in the Pitt-WVU rivalry. "I remember two or three of them when I was growing up. "This isn't big just for us," he added. "This isn't just a team thing; it's a state thing. We as a whole state are looking forward to this game. Me and my guys are amped up. We're working hard during camp, so by game time we can go out and have fun." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

West Virginia has placed four players on the 2022 Preseason Football team as selected by the conference's media, with three of the four players being in-state products. Leading the way are linemen on each side of the ball who are expected to have All-American seasons, both from the same high school just 15 miles down the road from WVU. Center Zach Frazier, a junior, and defensive tackle Dante Stills, a fifth-year senior, both from Fairmont Senior, anchor the offensive and defensive lines, which are expected to be the strength of the team. Also named to the team is Casey Legg, the aptly-named placekicker from Cross Lanes Christian in Charleston, highlighting an amazing journey. Legg did not play football in high school. The final Mountaineer to earn all-conference honors is Charles Wood, a senior from Dallas who transferred to WVU last season from Illinois State. - Charleston Gazette-Mail

Poised for a 2022 standout season: Defensive tackle Dante Stills is looking to mirror a 2021 season in which he was named to the All-Big 12 first team with seven sacks and 15 tackles for loss. The 6-4, 280-pound senior's presence takes on added importance this season after the transfers of several key players, including nose guard Akheem Mesidor, cornerback Nicktroy Fortune and linebacker Josh Chandler-Semedo, the team's leading tackler. - AP College Football

Now entering his fifth season with West Virginia, defensive lineman and former Fairmont Senior standout Dante Stills knows he's the old man when it comes to the Mountaineer roster. And after 15 spring practices, even he admitted he was feeling as such. "It was practice nine or 10 you really start to feel it on your body," Stills said after Saturday's Gold-Blue Game. "Your hands, your fingers start to hurt - your feet, your knees … I feel old, but I'm not." Perhaps not in terms of his age, but from the perspective of playing experience, Stills is about as old as a college football player can be. A freshman All-American according to The Athletic and ESPN.com all the way back in 2018, Stills has been a constant contributor to the WVU defense in each of his four seasons.

But after mulling over leaving to enter the NFL Draft, Stills saw enough holes in his game via film to realize that he needed to return. Some of what he saw boiled down solely to effort. Lack of consistency also stuck out to him. He reiterated that those were the targets when it came to his spring work. "What I wanted to work on was consistency running to the ball," Stills said. "There were plays last year where if I saw the ball across the field, for some reason I didn't try to go get him and show some effort. So, that was my main thing this year was to run to the ball, be around the ball. That was my thing." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

A pair of in-state defensive standouts received preseason accolades on Tuesday afternoon. West Virginia defensive tackle Dante Stills and Marshall defensive tackle Jamare Edwards were named to the Bronko Nagurski Award watch list, as released by the Football Writers Association of America. Stills was also one of 80 preseason nominees named to the Outland Trophy watch list.

The Nagurski Award is given annually by the Football Writers Association of America to the nation's top interior defensive lineman. The preseason watch list features 90 players. The Outland Trophy winner is chosen from three finalists who are part of the annual FWAA All-America Team. Committee members select the winner, based on the three finalists. Stills is no stranger to preseason accolades, returning as one of the Big 12's top defenders for the 2021 season. In 2020, the Fairmont native finished with 35 tackles, including a team-best 10.5 tackles for loss. He added two sacks, two pass breakups, a fumble recovery and a blocked kick. - Charleston Gazette

West Virginia defensive lineman Dante Stills is forever fighting mistaken perceptions, not to mention identify. In 2021, even after being part of a squad that led the nation in pass defense a year prior, he still hears questions from some media members about the supposed defensive shortcomings of the Big 12. "I tell people that all the time," he said of the fact that teams in the Big 12 have good defenses, albeit ones that are often overshadowed by some spectacular offensive play. "There may be times when you see the offense put up 50 points, but the defense can still be really good. I think the defensive side of the ball has some dogs, but they're going up against tempo and fast pace. Every team has good offensive linemen for sure. The offenses are so explosive, that takes away from some of (the attention) the defenses should get. Our defense last year was top five in the country, but I don't think we got the notoriety we deserved. I feel like we should have been in the conversation more." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

West Virginia senior defensive lineman Dante Stills was honored with a preseason All-Big 12 Conference spot on Wednesday as voted on by media. Stills was the only Mountaineer to make the 30-player squad. The 6-foot-4, 280-pound senior led West Virginia with 10.5 tackles for loss last season and also recorded 35 tackles and a pair of sacks. He was named an All-Big 12 honorable mention player in 2020. - Charleston Gazette-Mail

The Stills brothers are only one year apart age-wise. So, since Darius declared for the upcoming 2021 NFL draft, Dante wanted to join him. The Stills brothers are just that close. The problem was Darius' 2020 resume was much more impressive than Dante's. The 6-foot-1, 279-pound senior finished the season with 12 solo tackles and 13 assists for a total of 25 stops. Stills had 7.5 tackles for loss including 3.5 sacks totaling 22 yards in losses and actually intercepted a pass. That led to the elder Stills being voted Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-American. That's why he is NFL-bound while younger brother Dante is still suited up in blue and gold.

"Throughout the season I wasn't performing at the level I thought I would," said the younger Stills, showing uncommon self-awareness. "People thought I did good, but my stats weren't showing it. Which that is kind of a big deal. I mean, stats are how much you are doing throughout the year." The handwriting was on the wall. Darius needed to step up while Dante needed to stay put. "I just feel I didn't do as much as I needed to do," said the younger Stills, "to be at that level that Darius was at. That's kind of just how I thought. I was like, it's best for me to stay another year. And work and work and work, so I'm able to be at that level next year." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

In a way, Dante Stills didn't think he'd be playing at West Virginia this year, his senior season. He envisioned himself as a player who might be able to join brother Darius in the NFL draft this season, but there are dreamers and there are realists and, it turned out, the West Virginia defensive tackle was more realist than dreamer. "My main goal coming into my junior year was I want to leave, I want to be a three-year guy," Dante Stills admitted. "But throughout the year I wasn't performing at the level I thought I should have been. I did good, but my stats weren't showing it. Stats show how much you are doing throughout the year and I didn't feel I did as much as I needed to do to be at the level Darius is at.

"I thought it was best for me to stay another year and work and work and work so I am able to be at that level next year." Stills had a decent year, but he wasn't the dominant player he wanted to be or that you have to be if you are to make a dent on draft day, so after playing with Dante for three years at Fairmont Senior and three years at West Virginia - separated only the year Dante graduated and came to WVU - the two older sons of former Mountaineer star pass rusher Gary Stills will be apart. "He's here right now, but once he leaves it's going to be different," Dante Stills admitted. "I'm so used to living with him my whole life. I know he knows it's a business, a job. He knows I'm going to handle my business and I know he will, too." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

By getting planted firmly in the starting lineup, Stills, son of former WVU great Gary Stills, should have even more opportunities to make big plays on the WVU defensive line. The key for him is to make the most of those opportunities. He faded a little down the stretch, recording six sacks in his first eight games and earning just one sack in his last four. He'll need to improve on his consistency as a junior, but he still more than doubled his sack total between his freshman and sophomore seasons. He'll also be called upon to assume a veteran's role. Until now, that job was Donahue's. If the depth chart shapes up as some anticipate and freshman Jalen Thornton becomes the No. 2 defensive tackle, it will be Stills helping build up the next generation at that position.

As good as Stills and the rest of the defensive linemen have been, they can still help WVU defense as a whole become better. West Virginia finished a pedestrian 69th in the Football Bowl Subdivision in allowing 159.4 rushing yards per game. It was 72nd in opponents' third-down conversions, allowing first downs 39.9 percent of the time. Stills will get his chances to help improve those numbers. If WVU does improve, the spotlight on Stills will only shine brighter. - Charleston Gazette-Mail

2019 ALL-BIG 12 FOOTBALL SECOND TEAM (COACHES): DL Dante Stills, West Virginia,...The Stills brothers, Darius and Dante, were probably the most disruptive brother tandem this conference has seen since the Selmon brothers terrorized Big 8 teams in the mid-1970s at Oklahoma. Dante, a sophomore, was equally impactful this season with seven sacks, 11 1/2 tackles for losses and 24 tackles in 12 games. The Mountaineers finished second in the Big 12 and 27th nationally with 33 sacks. Darius and Dante will be the cornerstones of West Virginia's 2020 defense, and both should garner All-America consideration next summer. - West Virginia Football
