You see his hometown on the roster and you hear Ramon Jefferson's thick Bronx accent and your mind goes to basketball. With his big-city Bravado, the Kentucky running back sounds like so many of those hard-nosed New York City point guards whose voices yo u've heard. "Yeah, yeah," Jefferson said, smiling like he's heard this before. "I can play a little ball. I got a little jump shot, a little crossover move." That's the sport his hometown is known for. But for Jefferson, the Bronx was the launching bad f or a pigskin ascent that's taken him to FCS programs at Maine and Sam Houston state, with a stop at Garden City Community College in between. His final collegiate stop is his biggest step up yet. An FCS second-team All-American last season at Sam Houston - he rushed for 1,155 yards and 13 touchdowns - Jefferson is set to test his mettle in a crowded Kentucky backfield against the elites of the SEC. "I have big-play ability," Jefferson says. "Obviously, you know, big question is just, can it translate to this level, which I feel like it can." - Courier Journal

When Will Levis took the field for the first time in a drill against Kentucky's first-team defense, a newcomer lined up with him in the backfield. Ramon Jefferson took the first snap with the first team, but it's probably best not to take too much from t he move. The Sam Houston State transfer was one of five running backs who saw time with the first-team offense over the course of Saturday's practice, as Kavosiey Smoke, La'Vell Wright, JuTahn McClain and Chris Rodriguez each got turns as well.Rod riguez, a second-team preseason All-SEC selection, continues to practice though his playing status remains unclear after an offseason arrest on DUI charges. He had a spectacular one-handed catch on a throw deep down the right sideline from Levis during a drill against the first-team defense. "I (didn't) think he had that in him, to be honest," Levis joked. "No, Chris is awesome. To get him more involved in the passing game was a goal of mine - and just the running backs in general was a goal of mine." Smoke, Wright and McClain "bring another level of speed" to the UK backfield, Levis said. And Jefferson has made a strong first impression on his new QB, who called the 5-foot-10, 215-pound senior running back "a bowling ball" and "a little Mighty Mouse. " "He's got a good feel," Levis said. "You see he bounces that when he's supposed to bounce it, he cuts when he's supposed to cut. If Chris Rodriguez is unavailable in 2022, Kentucky football took out an impressive insurance policy Tuesday night with the addition of FCS All-America running back Ramon Jefferson as a graduate transfer. In 2020, his first year at the Huntsville, Texas, school, Jefferson rushed for 752 yards on 126 attempts, averaging 6.0 yards per carry. He rushed for seven touchdowns and had a long run of 59 yards. "We are excited to have Ramon join our Wildcat family," UK Coach Mark Stoops said in a release Tuesday night. "He is an excellent tailback, providing another quality player for us at that position. He was one of the top rushers in the FCS last season and he is a good fit for our scheme. He's tough, physical and durable and we are looking forward to develo ping him even further under our coaching staff."According to its updated roster released this week, Kentucky has also added 6-foot-5, 230-pound running back Dee Beckwith, a former four-star prospect who played his first two seasons at Tennessee. A Florence, Ala., native, Beckwith began his college career at wide receiver before being moved to running back. He carried the football four times for 27 yards in his UT career. Jefferson helped the Bearkats to a 21-1 record in his two seasons with the H untsville, Texas school. K.C. Keeler's team defeated South Dakota State 23-21 for the 2020-21 FCS national championship with Jefferson rushing for 96 yards on 16 carries. In the spring, Colorado running back Alex Fontenot was asked if he had watched any film of transfer Ramon Jefferson, who was expected to join the team in the summer. "I don't pay attention to new recruits," Fontenot said. Good thing, because Jefferson wo n't be coming to CU after all. On Friday, Jefferson, a former Sam Houston running back and one of CU's top transfer recruits of the offseason, announced that he has de-committed from the Buffs and will play elsewhere in his final year of eligibility. Exp ected to compete with Fontenot for the starting job, Jefferson had previously committed to Colorado in January and signed a grant-in-aid.A grant-in-aid is binding for the school, but not for the student-athlete until they enroll in school, so Jeff erson was still recruitable by other teams as he finished up his academic year at Sam Houston. CU recruited Jefferson after losing star Jarek Broussard, who transferred to Michigan State. Broussard, the 2020 Pac-12 offensive player of the year, led the B uffs in rushing the past two seasons. - Daily Camera
