Randy Charlton, Mississippi State, Player News

Mississippi State football defensive end Randy Charlton is doing "well" after a helmet-to-helmet hit during a drill in Monday's practice, a source told the Clarion Ledger. The source requested anonymity because no official announcement has been made. Trainers tended to Charlton before he was carted off MSU's practice fields on a stretcher and into an ambulance. He did not return to practice Tuesday. Charlton has been sidelined as a precautionary measure by doctors and head athletic trainer Thomas Callans, the source said. Charlton is entering his second season at Mississippi State after transferring from UCF after three seasons. He started 11 of 12 games for the Bulldogs last season and recorded four sacks and 35 tackles. Charlton, whose role elevated last season after defensive end Jordan Davis went down with a season-ending knee injury in an August scrimmage, was tied for sixth on the team with five tackles for loss. - The Clarion Ledger

Mississippi State added a talented player who has some baggage by way of the transfer portal Thursday. Former Central Florida defensive end Randy Charlton announced his commitment to Mississippi State via Twitter. Charlton had 18 tackles and two sacks in five games played as a starter on UCF's defensive line. Charlton's junior season was cut short a month ago after he was kicked off the team at UCF for his role in verbal harassment of UCF police officers, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

One of Charlton's teammates was arrested for driving without a license and carrying a firearm without a license. As officers detained him, Charlton and some of his other teammates arrived at the scene and started yelling at the officers. Charlton had 68 tackles, including 12.5 for a loss and 4.0 sacks, in 26 games played at UCF. He adds depth to a Mississippi State defensive line that might lose seniors Kobe Jones and Marquiss Spencer if they do not elect to come back with their extra year of eligibility because of the COVID-19 pandemic. - The Dispatch
