The Lyn-J Dixon experiment at West Virginia lasted several months earlier this year. His time at Tennessee didn't last several weeks. Dixon, who left Clemson for West Virginia last November only to enter the transfer portal again in June, is no longer pa rt of Josh Heupel's program. The 5-foot-10, 195-pound, fifth-year senior from Butler, Georgia, practiced for the first time with the Volunteers on Aug. 4 but missed multiple workouts last week due to an ankle injury.Heupel said after the first pre season scrimmage that Dixon was added to the roster to bolster depth at that position following the season-ending injury to redshirt sophomore Len'Neth Whitehead. "Since he's gotten in, he has embraced understanding what we're doing as fast as he possibl y can," Heupel said on Aug. 9. "I've been really pleased with the effort he's put into it. He's competed in a really good way out there on the practice field and in the stadium, and I'm looking forward to his progression in the back half of training camp and as we push towards game week." Dixon amassed 1,420 yards and 13 touchdowns on 218 carries during his four seasons with Dabo Swinney's Tigers that yielded three Atlantic Coast Conference titles. His best year occurred in 2019, when he rushed 104 time s for 635 yards and six scores. - Chattanooga Times Free Press

Tennessee football went looking for a running back who fit its needs at the start of preseason practices. It quickly found one in Lyn-J Dixon, who transferred to UT and added depth to a thin position. "He is in a race to understand and learn what we are doing as fast as he possibly can," Vols coach Josh Heupel said Tuesday following UT's first preseason scrimmage. Dixon is immediately eligible for Tennessee. He visited Knoxville after the Vols announced running back Len'Neth Whitehead had suffered a sea son-ending injury. Dixon rushed for 1,420 yards and 13 touchdowns over four seasons at Clemson. Dixon graduated from Clemson in December and this is his second transfer. He transferred to West Virginia in November. He entered the transfer portal again in June. - Knoxville News Sentinel

Former Clemson running back Lyn-J Dixon has a new home for the 2022 season. Dixon has committed to Tennessee, he announced Wednesday morning on Instagram. Dixon, the No. 7 running back in the class of 2018, was verbally committed to the Volunteers in hig h school before flipping to Clemson. Dixon, who will have two years of eligibility at Tennessee, had previously committed to West Virginia for the 2022 season last November but re-entered the transfer portal in June before playing a game with the Mountai neers. The former four-star recruit, rushed for 1,420 yards and 13 touchdowns across four seasons and 41 career games for Clemson. He had 547 yards and five touchdowns in 2018 and a career-high 635 yards and six touchdowns in 2019. Effective as a c hange-of-pace back behind now-NFLer Travis Etienne, Dixon was a prime candidate for the Tigers' starting running back position last season but ultimately split carries with Kobe Pace and Will Shipley. Dixon entered the transfer portal in September after three games with Clemson, later saying there were no hard feelings between him and coach Dabo Swinney, running backs coach CJ Spiller or anyone else at Clemson. - The State

About 15 minutes into his inaugural Zoom media availability, first-year Clemson running backs coach C.J. Spiller was interrupted by a voice off camera. Then Dabo Swinney appeared in frame. "He ain't ready! He ain't ready!" Swinney said, beaming. Spiller, of course would argue the opposite. He's not merely ready for his first full season as a coach - he's prepared. One of Spiller's most important tasks will be deciding on a pecking order for his position group. Many expect senior Lyn-J Dixon to be the pr esumptive starter in 2021, but Spiller said March 24 that the depth chart has yet to be established. "It's been a very healthy competition," Spiller said. Dixon's production dipped last season - he averaged 4.5 yards per carry, below his career average o f 6.6 yards - but in recent weeks he's earned high praise from Swinney and offensive coordinator Tony Elliott, who previously coached the running backs before moving to tight ends this spring. "I really like what I've seen out of Lyn-J," Swinney said. "H e's got a fire under his rear, and I love it. You know, there's a difference between running to a fire and running to get out of one. He's highly motivated." - Charleston Post Courier

Running back Lyn-J Dixon was Travis Etienne's unquestioned backup last season, finishing the 2019 campaign averaging 6.1 yards per carry. Dixon has been slower to produce this season, with offensive coordinator Tony Elliott noting often the battle for Et ienne's primary backup remained open. The junior might have solidified his spot Saturday. After scoring his first touchdown of the season last weekend in the 52-17 win over Pittsburgh, Dixon found the end zone again Saturday on a 19-yard run. He rushed f or 37 yards on three carries in the win. - Charleston Post Courier

Clemson offensive coordinator and running backs coach Tony Elliott was meeting with junior tailback Lyn-J Dixon in mid-January when the phone rang. They were speaking about expectations for Dixon in 2020. On the other end of Elliott's buzzing phone was T igers star running back Travis Etienne, ready to deliver news to his position coach about his future. Etienne was given a late first or early second round draft grade. He had been contemplating whether to enter the 2020 NFL Draft or return for his senior season. He called Elliott and informed him that he was coming back to Clemson for one final year. "It was kind of awkward because I was talking to Lyn-J. And I didn't know what Travis was going to do," Elliott said. "(Travis) called me and that's when h e told me right there. I let Lyn-J know and said, 'You've just got to make a decision.'"The decision Dixon had to make was whether to return to Clemson to again serve as Etienne's backup, or to transfer in search of a new home. Dixon was naturally a bit disappointed in Etienne's choice, according to Elliott. The Georgia native averaged 7.1 yards per carry in his first two seasons for the Tigers, good for second in school history behind only Etienne, and he proved capable of starting at a Power 5 program. With Etienne returning, Dixon won't get the chance to start at Clemson this year. "It was nothing personal to Travis. They've got a great relationship. But he was kind of hopeful that Travis was going to move on so that he could naturally step i nto that (role)," Elliott said. - The State
