Brenton Cox Jr., Florida, Player News

  10/31/22 - DE Brenton Cox Jr.rSr/2023, Florida, 6-4, 259 (DS#30 DE) + More +

Florida has dismissed pass rusher Brenton Cox for what coach Billy Napier called "more of a cumulative effect here." Cox, a fifth-year junior and one of the team's best defenders, is expected to turn pro and enter the NFL draft. The Stockbridge, Georgia native has 41 tackles, including 9 1/2 for loss and four sacks. He also leads the Gators with 19 quarterback hurries. "We've kind of decided to move on here," Napier said Monday. "I think that being a football player at the University of Florida is a privilege. There's certain expectations and standards that come with that. Obviously, he's done a lot of good things for the University of Florida and we wish him nothing but the best. "But sometimes you have to make decisions in the best interest of the team and certainly Brenton, we're going to do everything we can do to help him with his transition. But as simple as that, we've decided to move on." A five-star recruit coming out of high school, Cox transferred to Florida from Georgia during the 2019 season. He was a three-year starter for Florida, leading the team in sacks (8 1/2) and tackles for a loss (14 1/2) in 2021.

Napier declined to provide details regarding what prompted his decision, saying "we'll keep that in house." He also would not say if Cox would be welcomed back for the school's Pro Day next spring, when players with pro aspirations get to work out for NFL teams. "Cross that bridge when we get there," Napier said. Napier said he was unaware that Cox appeared to throw a punch in the fourth quarter of Florida's 42-20 loss to Georgia on Saturday. Replays show Cox turning and swinging at Bulldogs left tackle Broderick Jones after Jones blocked Cox during Kenny McIntosh's 4-yard touchdown run. Dismissing Cox surprised teammates and could have long-term effects on a program Napier has been charged with getting back to Southeastern Conference and national prominence. "It definitely sends a strong message throughout the locker room," cornerback Jaydon Hill said. Florida (4-4, 1-4 SEC), which has lost 12 of its last 15 league games, plays at Texas A&M (3-5, 1-4) on Saturday. - AP College Football

Three Sunshine State universities took steps Tuesday to salvage home football games as Hurricane Ian approached. Florida moved its game against Eastern Washington from Saturday to Sunday. Central Florida did the same with its game against SMU. South Florida relocated its Saturday game against East Carolina from Tampa, Florida, to Boca Raton. Although South Carolina is a safer distance from the major storm, the Gamecocks didn't want to wait to make a decision regarding their game against South Carolina State. Those schools will now play Thursday night, two days earlier than previously scheduled and at least a day before Ian reaches the area. Stetson canceled its home game against San Diego scheduled for Saturday in the Pioneer Football League. No. 23 Florida State and 22nd-ranked Wake Forest, meanwhile, are "closely monitoring" the storm while expecting to play as planned in Tallahassee. - AP College Football

Kickoff times are beginning to trickle out for the 2022 Florida football season, coach Billy Napier's first at the helm. The Gators will take on the defending national champions, the Georgia Bulldogs, on Oct. 29 at 3:30 p.m., with the game set to be broadcast on CBS. The contest in Jacksonville at TIAA Bank Field marks the 100th matchup between UF and UGA. The SEC Eastern Division rivals first met on the field during the 1915 season, and the game has since been an annual rivalry in all but seven seasons. The game has been played in Jacksonville since 1933, with the exception of the 1994 and 1995 seasons, when the stadium was undergoing renovations.

The Bulldogs hold a 53-44-2 lead in the series with the Gators. A week after UGA's first national championship in 41 years, Napier congratulated the Bulldogs on their accomplishment. While the Florida-Georgia kickoff time may not come as a surprise, Florida's kickoff with another rival has an atypical setup. The Gators will hit the road to face Florida State at Doak Campbell Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 25, which falls on a Friday rather than the traditional Saturday contest. The UF-FSU game will be broadcast on ABC. - Gainesville Sun

Florida expected an instant impact when Cox took the field after transferring from Georgia. He delivered, with eight tackles, a sack and a pass breakup in last year's opener against Ole Miss. After that, meh. The former five-star recruit had some spectacular moments, but he often faded into the defensive woodwork. That's a problem in Todd Grantham's high-pressure scheme, which needs the BUCK position outside linebacker to be a disruptive menace. Consistent play is largely a focus issue, though that didn't completely explain Cox's problem. It turned out his chronically sore left foot had a crack in the fifth metatarsal. Doctors put a screw in it after the season. Cox was spotted on campus in June in a walking boot and getting around with the aid of a scooter. That sparked reports Cox would miss much of the season due to a "scooter accident," but Cox is expected to be ready by the opening game. He flashed star potential on one good foot. It will be interesting to see what Cox can do on two of them. - Gainesville Sun

Cox transferred from Georgia, and after sitting out one season, he leads Florida in sacks (4), tackles for loss (8.5) and quarterback hurries (13). He also has 35 total tackles. Out of all the players on Florida's defensive front, Cox is the most capable of disrupting opposing quarterbacks. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Starting left tackle Stone Forsythe has a very good idea what Georgia transfer and former five-star recruit Brenton Cox is going to bring to the defense this season. He goes against him every day in practice. "We go at it every day," he said. "He's one of those speed rushers that can change it up. He's a great pass rusher. He has a bunch of different moves. "It's a little different than what we've been seeing in the past couple years with Jabari Zuniga and Jonathan Greenard and stuff like that. He kind of reminds me a little bit of Jachai Polite, just with that speed and the get off." - Gainesville Sun

After Georgia's first preseason scrimmage Saturday, coach Kirby Smart addressed Cox's departure from the team after last weekend for the first time. He quickly transferred to Florida. "Brenton chose to withdraw from the University of Georgia, going into the portal," Smart said. "He's now at another SEC institution so we wish him nothing but the best and we appreciate his contributions while he was here." Cox, a former five-star from Stockbridge who had 20 tackles last season as a freshman and started in the Sugar Bowl, now will go up against Georgia at another SEC East school. He was arrested on a misdemeanor marijuana charge this spring and snaps at his position could have been at a premium this season.

Florida's defensive coordinator is Todd Grantham, who served in the same role at Georgia under Mark Richt from 2010-13. Cox's new position coach is former Georgia linebacker Christian Robinson. Cox becomes the only former five-star recruit on Florida's roster. He is likely to have to sit out this season. - Athens Daily Banner

Cox, a native of Stockbridge, Ga., is listed as No. 6 on the UF roster and expected to practice with the team Friday. Cox's game eligibility has yet to be determined, though it is likely he will have to sit out a year before suiting up next season as a redshirt sophomore.   Georgia's convoluted situation at outside linebacker may have gotten a little more clarity on Monday. Brenton Cox, a starter in the Sugar Bowl in January, apparently has been dismissed from the team. UGA officials could not confirm a report by ugarivals.com that cited "sources." But defensive coordinator and outside linebackers position coach Dan Lanning was extremely vague when asked about Cox during a news conference late Monday morning.

Asked how Cox has looked so far three practices into preseason camp, Lanning said, "that's a good question. I'd actually leave that up to Coach (Kirby) Smart at this time." Cox, a sophomore from Stockbridge, already was expected to miss Georgia's season opener against Vanderbilt. He and fellow outside linebacker Robert Beal Jr. were arrested for having marijuana in their dorm room this past April. - AJC.com
