The loss of star tight end Derrick Deese Jr. will undoubtedly hurt, but the Spartans' depth at receiver inspires optimism that their aerial attack will look more like it did in 2019 and 2020 - when they ranked first and third in the league, respectively, in passing offense. They return their top four wide-outs from last season, and also add experience with the arrival of Elijah Cooks, who hauled in 115 catches for 1,478 yards and 18 touchdowns in five years at Nevada. - Wyoming Tribune Eagle

It's a unique opportunity - hopefully, once in a lifetime - and 11 Nevada football players plan to take advantage of it. With the NCAA basically offering to not count the 2020 season against a player's college eligibility, nearly a dozen Wolf Pack seniors have said they plan to come back to play in 2021. The list includes six players who were named to the All-Mountain West teams last year. Call it "The Fifth Year," call it "Senior 2.0," call it what you will, but Nevada should be loaded, especially at receiver and defensive line, with the addition of a group that normally would have been out of eligibility. - Reno Gazette Journal

2020 PRESEASON BILETNIKOFF AWARD WATCH LIST: Elijah Cooks, Nevada,...Cooks posted a breakout season in 2019, leading Nevada with 76 receptions, 926 receiving yards and eight touchdowns, all of which were career highs. His 12.2 receptions per game average ranked fourth in the MW and his 71.2 receiving yards per game were good for seventh in the league. He recorded a huge performance in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, totaling 197 receiving yards on 14 catches. His 197 receiving yards in the bowl game were third-most by a receiver in the conference last season. Cooks' presence on the field was felt in nearly every game as he hauled in at least three receptions in 12 of the Pack's 13 contests. - Nevada Football

The Nevada Wolf Pack didn't flinch against No. 24 San Diego State and came away with an impressive victory. Wide receiver Elijah Cooks threw a 50-yard pass on a trick play to set up Devonte Lee's go-ahead, 1-yard run with 10:31 to go and the Wolf Pack beat the Aztecs 17-13 Saturday night. The Wolf Pack surprised the Aztecs' tough defense with a reverse, with running back Toa Taua flipping the ball to Cooks, who stopped and threw a strike to Brendan O'Leary-Orange at the SDSU 5. Three plays later, Lee burst into the end zone for a 17-10 lead.

Inconsistent this season, the Wolf Pack (6-4, 3-3 Mountain West) became bowl eligible and defeated the Aztecs for the second straight season. SDSU (7-2, 4-2) struggled in its first action since jumping into The Associated Press Top 25 two weeks ago. The Aztecs, whose four-game winning streak was snapped, still lead the West Division. "It's hard to catch this team. It's hard to get them out of position," Nevada coach Jay Norvell said. "It's hard to get behind them and so we just felt like we needed to make a play like that along the way to help get behind them. Fortunately we did." Cooks said he was nervous when the play call came in, "but I told O.J., `Slow down and just go and I'm going to hit you.' He did that and it worked out perfectly. "I played quarterback growing up. My whole goal coming up when I was a little kid was I wanted to throw at least one pass in college and I did that," Cooks added. "I'm really hyped about that. That was fun." - Nevada/AP College Football
