The University at Buffalo's football game against Akron has been postponed due to a lake-effect snowstorm hitting the western New York region, the Mid-American Conference announced Friday. Officials are considering shifting the game from Saturday to Sund ay pending travel conditions. The National Weather Service has a lake-effect storm warning that's now extended through Sunday afternoon, with a projection of two to four feet of snow expected to be dumped on the region. With two games remaining, Buffalo (5-5, 4-2) sits third in the East Division and remains one win shy of becoming bowl-eligible. Akron (1-9, 0-5) is last in the East. Buffalo also announced the storm has led to the cancellation of the women's basketball home game against Princeton on Satu rday. The Tigers (3-1) opened the season 24th before falling out of the rankings this week. - AP College Football

James Patterson began his fifth season with the Bulls when they opened preseason practices Thursday at UB Stadium in preparation for their season opener at noon Sept. 3 at Maryland. The linebacker from Glenn Dale, Md., is using his extra year of eligibil ity, granted by the NCAA in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He didn't want to leave the program after an uncharacteristic 4-8 season, either - UB's first under-.500 season since 2016, when the Bulls were 2-10. "4-8 is not a good look," Patterson said. "That's not been the known, that's not been the recent for Buffalo football. Since I've been here, we've always been to a MAC championship game or to a bowl game, so that's the expectation. We want to keep rising, and try to go to a New Year's Six bowl. That's always been the goal, to be a top 25 team, and to make it even better."Patterson led UB and was second in the Mid-American Conference with 116 tackles in 2021, and he returns to the Bulls after sitting out UB's spring game due to sports-he rnia surgery. He also returns to a team that underwent significant offseason roster turnover, as 21 FBS and FCS transfers and 15 true freshmen and junior-college players join this year's roster. "The fact that he is back, James Patterson is one of the to p returning players in college football," UB coach Maurice Linguist said. "He probably had a lot of opportunities after the season to do a lot of things, and he's on a lot of NFL scouts' lists right now. The fact that he said, 'I'm coming back,' ... it t ells you something, when your best players and the best people and the fact they want to come back, it speaks to what we feel like is going on in that locker room right now. "We're excited about the ability they bring and the leadership they've provided. " - Buffalo News

Eight months after finishing 4-8 overall, and 2-8 in the Mid-American Conference, the University at Buffalo was picked to finish third in the East Division in the 2022 MAC football 24-person preseason media poll. The projection is a kind improvement, fol lowing the Bulls' fifth-place finish in the East a season ago. "You know, preseason polls, they're very necessary," Bulls coach Maurice Linguist said. "This time of the year brings all the excitement and all the juice and all the talk of football. We kno w where football's played, it's played on the field. Our men in the locker room know that and understand that. We have work in front of us that we have to get after in the month of August." Finishing above Buffalo in the East were Miami (Ohio) with 139 p oints, 20 first-place votes and five MAC championship votes, followed by reigning division champion Kent State with 116 points and three first-place votes.Teams not ranked No. 1 typically feel slighted, and that slight is exactly why games are pla yed. On a weekly basis, teams are given an opportunity to prove a miscalculation was made and their results from training camp until the end of the season is what matters most. "It doesn't mean anything, but you still have to use that to fuel the fire th at they're doubting us," Bulls linebacker James Patterson said. "We know what we can do and we know what type of team we are and we just got to show that on game day." - Buffalo News

This is the season when Patterson truly has the opportunity to make a name for himself. Not that he hasn't done that, as he's helped the Bulls become one of the MAC's consistent winning programs. The senior from Glenn Dale, Md., is a two-year captain for UB, and was the team's leading tackler last season, when he was named a first-team All-Mid-American Conference selection at inside linebacker. He has been added to the Butkus Award watch list for best linebacker in college football, and the Bednarik Awa rd watch list for the best defensive player in college football. This is the year, though, where he will reiterate that he is more than just Jaret Patterson's twin brother. "I'll do it through my play, and through my leadership, and nothing else," Patterson said July 20 at the MAC Media Day at Ford Field. "Nothing new. Keep it plain and simple. I'm still the same guy who doesn't really like all the shine and the glory, I'm still the guy who likes to do the dirty work and stay under the scenes. Tha t's me. That's always going to be me, and I'm never going to change from that." In his own way, Patterson thrived as he worked in the shadows of his brother's limelight. As Jaret Patterson ran for 1,072 yards and 19 touchdowns in six games last year, Jam es was an integral part of a defense that allowed a conference-low 360.4 yards per game. He had 63 tackles, two pass breakups, an interception and a forced fumble last season. - Buffalo News
