Emory Jones adeptly orchestrated the offense, showed off his elusiveness on a touchdown run. Xazavian Valladay juked and jolted his way for big chunks of yards. Arizona State's two marquee transfers had sterling debuts and the rest of the new-look Sun De vils were sharp most of the night, opening the season with an easy win over an FCS opponent. Jones ran for two touchdowns in his desert debut, Halladay ran for 116 yards and a score, and the Sun Devils opened their fifth season under coach Herm Edwards w ith a 40-3 win over Northern Arizona on Thursday night. "There's a lot of things we have to work on, but the composure of the team was good," Edwards said. "With all these new guys on the sideline, you didn't know how they were going to act, but they wer e good." The Sun Devils needed a few series to jell with 43 new players on their roster. Once they got rolling, the Lumberjacks could do little to stop them.Carter Brown kicked four field goals, Arizona State led 24-3 at halftime and outgained Nor thern Arizona 419-120 in total yards to win its 23rd straight home opener. The Sun Devils are 17-0 all-time against FCS schools. Valladay, a Wyoming transfer, showed off the speed that's made him the nation's active leading rusher, reeling off a 27-yard TD run early in the third quarter. Jones had poise in the pocket and made good decisions, scoring on a 1-yard dive in the second quarter and a 17-yard run just before halftime. "We got a first win and have many more good things to come," said Jones, who threw for 152 yards on 13-of-18 passing and ran for 48 yards. - Arizona State/AP College Football

2022 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Xazavian Valladay (Sr.), Arizona State,...Before getting into the football stuff, let's note the rarity of having one name that contains the letters X, Z and V. Moving on, running back Xazavian Valladay (6-0, 200) transferred from Wyoming to Arizona State in January 2022 after averaging over five yards per carry in 2021. If there's a team in the Pac-12 that could challenge Colorado for the most tumultuous offseason in the portal, it's ASU. The Sun Devils lost 20 players, including three-year starting quarterback Jayden Daniels (LSU); three starting wide receivers in Rick y Pearsall (Florida), LV Bunkley-Shelton (Oklahoma) and Johnny Wilson (Florida State); their top returning running back, DeaMonte Trayanum (Ohio State to play linebacker); starting linebacker Eric Gentry (Southern California); and one of the best defensi ve tackles in the Pac-12, Jermayne Lole (Louisville).Several quality depth players left, as well. The Sun Devils did, however, add 13 players, including Jones, Silvera and Valladay - who are all expected to make an immediate impact. In addition, o ffensive linemen Des Holmes (Penn State), Chris Martinez (San Diego State) and Joey Ramos (Iowa State) are expected to compete for starting jobs, as is tight end Messiah Swinson (Missouri). - Daily Camera

Sean Chambers isn't the only significant piece to Wyoming's offense looking to get through a full season with a relatively clean bill of health. Sure, Wyoming's quarterback will garner most of the attention in that regard given his well-documented injury history, but Xazavian Valladay also has aspirations of getting through the spring and this fall as close to full strength as possible. The Cowboys' No. 1 running back admitted it's been on his mind a lot this offseason. "I was thinking to myself that, p laying football, I haven't been through 12 games without an injury," Valladay said. "That's one of my biggest goals that I'm trying to focus on is what can I do to stay better, stay longer on the field and just be more of a durable back instead of leanin g more toward (being) injury-prone?" Fortunately for Valladay, the injuries he's sustained haven't been significant enough that he hasn't been able to finish a season. But they've been nagging enough to slow him down and even keep him on the sideline at times. - Casper Star-Tribune

At the beginning of last season, Xazavian Valladay was Wyoming's unquestioned RB1. By the end of it, Trey Smith held that distinction. The Cowboys once again have a backfield duo that's virtually interchangeable in that role. At first, there was a chance Valladay would be the only half of that pairing to return to UW for another season. But Smith, who had already been in the program for two years after transferring from Louisville, decided to use the free year of eligibility granted to seniors by the NC AA and run it back at UW. It gives the Cowboys' running game one of the Mountain West's top 1-2 punches heading into the spring. Valladay, a redshirt junior last season, led the league in rushing on a per-game basis in 2019 before finishing third in the conference in rushing yards (550) during the Cowboys' pandemic-shortened season last fall. A late-season injury forced him to miss a game and limited him to just 17 carries in the final two games he played, but UW's production on the ground didn't drop o ff much thanks to Smith. - Casper Star-Tribune

It may be later than usual, but Wyoming's football team will have a spring this year. At least that's the plan. UW is slated to begin spring practice April 6, head coach Craig Bohl said Monday. The Cowboys' annual Brown and Gold game is also tentatively slated for May 8 at War Memorial Stadium, which gives UW more than four weeks to get their 15 spring practices in based on the current schedule. The Cowboys usually begin spring drills in mid-to-late March, but Bohl said he wanted to buy more time this s pring amid the coronavirus pandemic, which kept UW from holding spring practices last year. - Casper Star-Tribune

Wyoming is still awaiting word on its top running back. UW coach Craig Bohl said Monday afternoon he still didn't have any information on the status of Xazavian Valladay, who was injured in the Cowboys' win at UNLV last week. Bohl said after the game Val laday would undergo an MRI on his left leg. "We'll get some more information later on (Monday)," Bohl said. "If I had it right now, I'd give it to you."Valladay left the game early in the second quarter after being upended at the tail end of his l one reception, ending what had been a prolific day for the junior up to that point. Valladay had 94 yards on his first six carries, including a career-long 78-yard touchdown run on UW's second play from scrimmage.
