After nearly a week of silence following BYU football's 24-23 win over SMU in the New Mexico Bowl, it's understandab le if Cougar fans got their hopes up about the possibility of junior quarterback Jaren Hall deciding to return for one more year at the helm. It wasn't to be - but BYU did get some potentially good news. Hall, who spent five years in Provo, finally made his intentions known with a social media announcement on Friday evening.Hall's career stats are solid: 468-of-718 passing for 6,174 yards with 52 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also had 181 rushes for 798 yards with nine TDs on the ground as well as four receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown. While his focus turns toward preparing for pro day and the upcoming draft, BYU wasted little time in adding a quarterback from the transfer portal. BYU announced Saturday that it had signed former USC and University of Pittsburgh quarterback Kedon Slovis as a graduate transfer for the 2023 season. - Daily Herald

Jaren Hall's BYU career is over. The fifth-year quarterback will forgo his final year of college eligibility and enter the NFL draft, he announced on Friday evening. His departure formally means BYU will enter the Big 12 with a new leader and ends one of the more successful quarterback eras in program history - where BYU produced back-to-back draftable quarterbacks in Zach Wilson and Hall. "This has been an amazing ride. Words can't explain the joy I had playing in LES for my hometown," Hall said. "Look ing forward to the next stage of my football career by officially declaring for the 2023 NFL Draft." Hall arrived in 2018 out of Maple Mountain High School as a two-way star in football and baseball.He eventually gave up baseball to become BYU's s tarting quarterback the last two seasons. He finished his career with 6,174 passing yards and 52 touchdowns to just 11 interceptions. He also ran for nine touchdowns and 798 yards. In picking up the mantle from Wilson, he led BYU to 10 wins in 2021 and e ight this last season. Between Wilson's final year and Hall's two-year run, the team won 29 games in three years - one of the winningest stretches for the Cougars in a decade. Jaren Hall threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score before leaving with an ankle injury to lead BYU to a 35-26 victory over Stanford on Saturday night, and Cardinal coach David Shaw announced his resignation after the game. After arriving unu sually late for his postgame news conference, Shaw said he told his team in the locker room he was stepping down. "It's been a great run," Shaw said. "But it's time for me to step aside. It's time for the next group to come in." The Cougars (7-5) scored touchdowns on their first four possessions to take control in their regular-season finale and assure themselves of a winning record for a fifth straight season. Hall threw two TD passes to Isaac Rex before getting hurt. Coach Kalani Satake said he expect ed Hall to be able to play in the bowl game.BYU did much of its damage on the ground with 358 yards rushing against a depleted defense for the Cardinal (3-9). Chris Brooks ran for 164 yards a year after gaining 131 against Stanford in the Big Game for rival California. Hinckley Ropati added a 43-yard touchdown run and Puka Nacua scored on a 25-yard run. Tanner McKee threw for 313 yards and a TD, and Mitch Leigber and Ashton Daniels scored on 1-yard runs for Stanford. But it wasn't enough to preve nt the Cardinal from posting back-to-back seasons with at least nine losses for the first time in school history. Jaren Hall threw for a career-best 456 yards and accounted for six touchdowns as BYU pulled away from Utah Tech in the second half to take a 52-26 victory in the regular season finale Saturday. The victory made the Cougars (6-5) bowl eligible. Hall compl eted 23 of 35 passes with five touchdowns and an interception. He also ran for a touchdown. Keanu Hill had six catches for 137 yards and three touchdowns. Chris Brooks rushed for 102 yards. BYU finished with 676 yards of offense.Utah Tech (4-7), f rom the FCS Western Athletic Conference, kept the game close and trailed 28-20 at the half. The Trailblazers took the lead three times in the first half, but the BYU defense forced them to punt six straight times in the second half. Victor Gabalis threw for 350 yards and three touchdowns with an interception to lead Utah Tech. Jaren Hall threw for 273 yards and three touchdowns to help No. 19 BYU to a 38-26 victory over Utah State on Thursday night. Hall, who favored his right shoulder after a late hit near the end of the third quarter, has thrown for at least 250 yards in nin e consecutive games. Kody Epps finished with 86 yards and a touchdown on five catches. Christopher Brooks ran for 90 yards and a score on 11 carries. BYU (4-1) beat Utah State for the third straight time in the Battle for the Old Wagon Wheel. Cooper Lega s threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns while adding 54 yards and another score on the ground to lead the Aggies. Legas, who filled in for injured starter Logan Bonner, also threw a pair of interceptions. Calvin Tyler, Jr. added 104 yards on 18 carries. The Aggies (1-4, 0-1 MW) lost their fourth straight game and fell to 6-65 all-time versus AP Top 25 teams.Utah State took a 7-0 lead after Legas capped the Aggies' opening drive with a 7-yard run. Things were on the verge of unraveling for Utah S tate after that early score. BYU covered 65 yards in two plays - a 34 yard catch by Gunner Romney and 31-yard catch-and-run by Keanu Hill - to even the score. Then, Max Tooley reeled in a tipped pass from Legas and returned it 32 yards to give the Cougar s their first lead at 14-7. Utah State bounced back and shut down BYU's offense after its initial drive. The Cougars went three-and-out on three consecutive possessions, opening the door for the Aggies to retake a 17-14 lead on a 14-yard catch by Brian C obbs. Jaren Hall threw for 337 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 19 BYU to a 38-24 victory over Wyoming on Saturday night. Hall became the 20th BYU quarterback to hit 4,000 career yards passing while completing 81% of his attempts. Keanu Hill finished with a career-high 160 yards and two touchdowns on five catches to lead the Cougars. BYU (3-1) has not lost at home to Wyoming since 1987. Andrew Peasley threw for 154 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cowboys. Titus Swen added 78 yards on 20 carries. Wyo ming (3-2) lost to BYU for the ninth straight time in the series. BYU had to wait out a 2 1/2-hour weather delay to get its season started, then took just 11 seconds to score its first touchdown. The No. 25 Cougars scored 38 straight points in the first half and cruised to a 50-21 victory over South Florida on Saturday night. Wide receiver Puka Nucua scored on a 75-yard inside run on the first play from scrimmage of the game and added a second rushing touchdown. Christopher Brooks rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown as BYU dominated the line of scrimmage and ran the ball for 314 yards. Jaren Hall was efficient, completing 25 of 32 passes for 261 yards and two touchdowns. He completed passes to 12 receivers. South Florida was sluggish out the gate. It is the biggest question for the future of BYU. Will this season be the last for the fifth-year quarterback? Jaren Hall smiled and gave the most honest answer on the topic yet. "Since I was a little kid I've thought about the NFL," he told The Salt Lak e Tribune. "If I'm being honest, I'm not going to sit here and say, 'I never think about the NFL.' That's my dream right? Since I was a kid." For the typically reserved Hall, it was a glimpse into his thinking - a rare near acknowledgment that this seaso n really could be his last in Provo. Still, the quarterback's priority is on the present. "Now I realize that if it is going to happen, it's going to happen," Hall said of his NFL aspirations. "I don't need to worry about when that is. I just need to wor ry about my summer right now and getting better. And taking care of business against USF." Hall starts this year in a much different spot than last year. He is the incumbent starter now, and a dark horse candidate to be a first-round NFL draft pick.After throwing for 2,583 yards and 20 touchdowns in his first year, the buzz is starting to grow around him. ESPN already has him slotted as high as the No. 9 pick in next year's draft. If Hall can knock off Baylor at home and then Oregon on the road i n the first three weeks of the season - both nationally televised games - that could be all Hall needs to grab that NFL attention. "I don't love the lights, the cameras. I'm not a big fan of all the talk," Hall said of his name potentially leaping into N FL conversations. "But I'm different from a lot of guys. While Jaren Hall's numbers in 2021 weren't going to put him in the BYU quarterback record books, they showed a solid level of performance throughout the year: 10 games, 189-of-296 passing for 2,583 yards, 20 TDs, 5 interceptions, 62 rushes, 307 yards, 3 TDs. Most importantly, he had an 8-2 record, which is pretty good for a first-year starter. Now he heads into 2022 with a host of weapons, an experienced line and extensive knowledge of what the Cougar offense can do. The reality is, however, that he has to step up and take advantage of the circumstances for BYU to truly be the team it is capable of being. If he does (and stays healthy), don't be surprised if the former Maple Mountain star gets plenty of recognition and is off to the NFL next year. - Da ily Herald

After spring camp, Jaren Hall went back to the drawing board, looking at film from different NFL players. An emphasis was put on Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his ability to throw at any point in a progression. It is also about throw ing in different arm angles. Others Hall looked at were Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen and Tampa Bay quarterback Tom Brady. Brady was more of a lesson in controlling your movements. Allen was an example of how to feel under control when a play has broken down. "I'm not trying to necessarily see how I can model my game after their game," Hall said. "But I want to see what they do well and in what situations they do well. So more shop talk ideas of, 'Why are they doing this?' Just trying to get in their m inds."Beck in particular has become known for improving a quarterback's ability to get back on balance and throw quickly. He has worked with multiple mobile quarterbacks in past years. Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys has worked with Beck. More recently, former BYU quarterback Zach Wilson was under his tutelage. Beck briefly held a position with the New York Jets to help Wilson once he was drafted. Hall met him through his father, Kalin, and decided to make him his trainer. "We are trying to ta ke the skill set that we see and see how we can refine it," Beck said at BYU media day. Before a near capacity crowd at 25,000-seat Paulson Stadium, Georgia Southern (3-8) fell short in its attempt to beat the highest-ranked team to visit Statesboro. The Eagles had played eight previous games against ranked opponents, beating Appalachian State in 2018 and 2019.In the first meeting between the two schools, BYU coach Kalani Sitake said Georgia Southern fans were throwing food at his team in the first half. "We were getting hit by burritos on the sideline," Sitake said. "It was pretty hostile, so I'm really proud of how the guys bounced back and made some adjustments. We talked about it at halftime. Playing our style of football, and I thought we did that in t he second half." Tyler Allgeier added 69 yards and a touchdown on the ground as the Cougars (3-0) ear ned their third straight victory over a Pac-12 opponent. BYU forced four turnovers and posted its third straight victory over Arizona State. Jaylen Daniels threw for 265 yards to lead the Sun Devils (2-1), but also tossed a pair of interceptions. BYU has worked to build itself into a team with a tough defense and efficient offense, following a blueprint laid down by archrival Utah. The Cougars finally found a way to beat the Utes - using that same blueprint. Jaren Hall threw three touchdown passe s and totaled 241 yards of offense, helping BYU topple No. 21 Utah 23-17 on Saturday night. Tyler Allgeier added 97 yards on 27 carries as the Cougars snapped a nine-game losing streak against the Utes. It was BYU's first victory over their rivals since 2009 and the team's largest margin of victory in the series since 1996.BYU ran for 219 yards, becoming the first team to gain at least 200 rushing yards against Utah since Texas also rushed for 231 yards in the 2019 Alamo Bowl. "I would have bet m y house going in that we would not lose the line of scrimmage," Utes coach Kyle Whittingham said "I never have seen that coming where we didn't control the line of scrimmage. That's our M.O., that's what we do best. But we surrendered nearly 250 yards ru shing, couldn't get a sack." Micah Bernard ran for 146 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries to lead Utah. Charlie Brewer threw for 147 yards and a touchdown for the Utes, who trailed the entire game. Utah cut BYU's lead to 23-17 on a 22 yard run from Bern ard with 9:31 left. The Cougars responded with a six-minute drive that ended in a 21-yard field goal from Jake Oldroyd, effectively ending the Utes' comeback hopes. Zach Wilson watched his alma mater begin a new chapter without him. His successor got off to a good start. Quarterback Jaren Hall accumulated 243 yards and two touchdowns as BYU defeated Arizona 24-16 at Allegiant Stadium on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams. Hall, the redshirt sophomore from Spanish Fork, Utah, made his third career start and first in the post-Wilson era. Wilson, drafted No. 2 overall by the New York Jets in this year's NFL Draft, was in Las Vegas to see the Cougars pl ay in an NFL stadium. "Zach being here, supporting the guys he played with for three years, means a lot to us to have him and brings confidence to everybody for what he's done in the past," Hall said. "It was good to have him." Hall started the game 1-of -5 passing for 10 yards, but finished 18 of 28 for 198 yards and two touchdown passes for the Cougars, who have won 12 of their last 13 games.After a scoreless first quarter, BYU's signal caller lit a spark. Hall caught a 9-yard pass from receiver Neil Pau'u to put the Cougars into the red zone. Tyler Allgeier ran into the end zone from 15 yards out on the next play to give BYU a 6-0 lead with 9:17 left in the second quarter. "I think it was just a clean football game overall for the offense," Ha ll said. "I thought we executed well. Just kind of took the plays in front of us when they came, the opportunities the defense gave us." That drive sparked BYU's offense in the second quarter. On the Cougars' next drive following a missed 31-yard field g oal from Arizona, Hall found Pau'u in single coverage down the middle for a 67-yard touchdown. A two-point conversion made it 14-0 with 2:06 left in the first half. Pau'u caught eight passes for 126 yards and both of Hall's touchdown passes. BYU has its man. Jaren Hall has won the Cougars' starting quarterback job, beating out Baylor Romney for the title of QB1. Hall appeared in five games for BYU - and started in two - in 2019, completing 31 of 46 passes for 420 yards and a touchdown. He al so rushed for 139 yards and three scores that year. "It feels good," Hall said. "Our work really begins, time to focus in on Arizona. For today, enjoy it with my wife and my family. It's fun, but we've got to go win [next] Saturday." If it felt as though the Cougars' quarterback battle was drawn out, that's because it was. Offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick said he had never gone this far into fall camp splitting up reps equally due to a quarterback position battle.The decision started taking s hape a week ago, BYU head coach Kalani Sitake said, but the staff used that time as an opportunity for the Romney and Jacob Conover to "change [the coaches'] minds." They did well, but it wasn't enough to beat out Hall for the starting gig. "Those guys a re great young men with great character, so they were classy," Sitake said. "... When handling these tough situations, I thought they handled it like mature adults. They're team guys - they're guys who are about the team first. So far in Hall's career, it has been getting hurt that has limited his opportunities the most. He missed all of last year, although he said last week that he's fine now. "You can't play worrying about injuries or else bad things continue to happen," Hall said. Not only that, he also said he is trying to be as proactive as he can be to give himself the best chance to stay on the field. "I'm taking a new approach," Hall said. "I've been reading books and learning from some of the best athletes in the worl d - the Tom Bradys, the Lebron Jameses - about how they stay healthy. I'm applying it, having a better diet consistently, having a good routine leading up to fall camp. I'm developing a better foundation for my body to maintain it all season long."He said he started the process six months ago and is seeing the difference. "Getting healthy from my hip injury and with a lot of the changes I've made, it's been pretty eye-opening," Hall said. Hall added that he has an extra reason to stay fit. He's g ot to be ready to carry a newborn baby around, which he and his wife are expecting to arrive in the next couple of week. When it comes to football, Hall said he is focused on improving his all-around game. "It's about making all the plays, all the throws ," Hall said. "It's taking all the abilities I have on the field and making those plays a little more effortless, make them come a little more smoothly.
