Middle Tennessee will play San Diego State in the Hawaii Bowl on Dec. 24 on the campus of the University of Hawaii after the bowl game was canceled in 2020 and 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Blue Raiders (7-5) announced Monday they have accepted an invitation to play in the game after winning four of their last five to become bowl eligible. Middle Tennessee will be playing in its sixth bowl in eight seasons and 10th overall under coach Rick Stockstill. San Diego State (7-5) of the Mountain West Conference won five of its final seven to become bowl eligible. This is the second trip to this bowl for both programs. Middle Tennessee lost 52-35 to Hawaii in 2016, while San Diego State beat Cincinnati 42-7 in 2015. Conference USA teams are 8-4 in the Hawaii Bowl overall. - AP College Football

2022 PRESEASON WUERFFEL TROPHY (COMMUNITY SERVICE) WATCHLIST: Jordan Ferguson, Middle Tennessee, Sr., DL,...In 2021, Ferguson successfully launched his first official non-profit organization called Hands Worldwide. With some help, his first event was handing out hot plates of food and water to those in need on the streets of Atlanta during the winter holidays. Later in the winter, he handed out blankets to the homeless in Nashville and Murfreesboro. This is just a small sampling of what he does on a consistent basis. That selfless devotion to not only his teammates, but also the community at large, continues to make the difference in the lives of so many people. - Middle Tennessee Football

Middle Tennessee head coach Rick Stockstill announced the permanent captains for the Blue Raiders in 2022. Wide receiver Yusuf Ali, quarterback Chase Cunningham, defensive end Jordan Ferguson, wide receiver Jaylin Lane, and defensive tackle Ja'Kerrius Wyatt were honored as the 17th group of permanent captains in the FBS era at Middle Tennessee. The team voted on the five captains, and Coach Stockstill made the announcement during a team meeting. "This is the ultimate honor when your teammates make you a permanent captain for the season," said Stockstill. "These five guys have meant a lot to this program, and all are very deserving. It's not just your play on the field but the way you conduct yourself off the field and how you lead and push your teammates. When your peers give you a vote for the way you practice every day and compete on the field and in the classroom there is not a better honor out there." It marks Ferguson's third year as a captain, and the first for Ali, Cunningham, Lane, and Wyatt. - Middle Tennessee Football

Two Middle Tennessee football players have been named to the East-West Shrine Bowl 1,000 list, as announced by bowl officials Wednesday. Defensive end Jordan Ferguson and receiver Izaiah Gathings are the Blue Raiders who have been named to the list. Each year, approximately 1,000 all-star game eligible players are drafted, signed after the draft, or attend a rookie mini-camp. The aim for Shrine Bowl 1,000 is to serve as a look into the scouting process, as well as begin to preview college players who are currently all-star game eligible for the 2023 East-West Shrine Bowl and 2023 NFL Draft class.

The comprehensive list includes players from all four levels of college football and consultation with NFL and college personnel. Ferguson had a banner season in 2021 when he established new career marks in tackles (58), tackles for loss (16.5), sacks (9), hurries (14), forced fumbles (3) and fumble recoveries (2). He ranked 22nd nationally in tackles for loss per game (1.3) and was 30th in sacks per game (.69). - Middle Tennessee football

All football players are eager to get back on the field after missing spring practice and being away from their chosen sport since mid-March. You will have to excuse Jordan Ferguson if he seems more enthusiastic than most. The Blue Raider defensive end has been salivating for the chance to return to the gridiron since suffering a season-ending knee injury just two days prior to the start of the 2019 season. "I am ready to do what I love, and I am eager to do what I came (to Middle Tennessee) to do," said Ferguson, a 6-foot-2, 266-pound defensive end from Atlanta. "I have a lot to show and prove a lot of people wrong. I'm so excited to get back on the field with my teammates and get to work."

Count defensive coordinator Scott Shafer among those who share Ferguson's excitement to get back on the field. Ferguson is a difference maker and his absence impacted the Blue Raider defense last season. "When we lost Jordan we lost one of our best players before we ever started the season," Shafer said. "Jordan was poised and ready to have a great season. He had a great offseason and had prepared himself well. He was ready to go. When he got injured it was a shame. I was so disappointed for him because he had worked so hard." Ferguson's impact from the end position should impact a defense that has several talented players ready to hit the field. The defensive stalwart enters his redshirt junior season with 45 career tackles, seven for negative yardage, 1.5 sacks and one interception. All of that occurred as a defensive tackle. - Middle Tennessee Football
