Kyle Vantrease, Georgia Southern, Player News

Kyle Vantrease threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Ezrah Archie for the game-winning score to lead Georgia Southern to a dramatic 51-48 double overtime win over Appalachian State on Saturday night. Despite entering with six wins, the Mountaineers needed the victory to become bowl eligible because two of their wins were against FCS-members Robert Morris and The Citadel, leaving them one win shy of five required wins against FBS teams. Appalachian State started the season with a 63-61 home loss to North Carolina before going to College Station, Texas and beating then No. 6 Texas A&M 17-14.

Georgia Southern (6-6, 3-5 Sun Belt) needed the win to become bowl eligible. Each team scored a touchdown in the first overtime, and the Mountaineers' Michael Hughes kicked a 32-yard field goal in Appalachian State's second overtime possession. After Vantrease threw incomplete on first down, he came back with a laser to Archie and Georgia Southern fans stormed the field. Hughes missed a 30-yard field goal as time expired in regulation with the game tied at 38. Vantrease threw for 385 yards and three touchdowns. Nate Noel ran for 171 yards on 12 carries with three touchdowns for the Mountaineers (6-6, 3-5). - Georgia Southern/AP College Football

The Stow, Ohio, native finished the shootout-which featured 1,265 yards of total offense-with a program-record 578 passing yards, the third-most in Sun Belt Conference history.   Georgia Southern's Kyle Vantrease set the national season high and his career high with 578 passing yards against James Madison.   Kyle Vantrease threw four touchdown passes, including a 22-yarder to Derwin Burgess Jr. with 1:10 remaining, and Georgia Southern beat No. 25 James Madison 45-38 on Saturday to spoil the Dukes' first appearance in the AP Top 25. Vantrease passed for a school-record 578 yards and had three receivers with more than 100 yards as the Eagles (4-3, 1-2 Sun Belt Conference) shredded James Madison's proud defense. James Madison (5-1, 3-1) led 14-0 early in the game and 24-14 early in the second half. The Dukes, who moved into the Top 25 in their first FBS season by ranking second in the nation in total defense, couldn't stop Georgia Southern's comeback despite holding the Eagles to 12 rushing yards. Todd Centeio's 25-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Greene Jr. gave James Madison a 38-37 lead with 2:28 remaining.

Vantrease brought the Eagles down the field quickly and completed an 11-yard pass to Burgess to set up the decisive score. Anthony Wilson's interception with 18 seconds remaining ended James Madison's final drive. Centeio ran for three touchdowns and completed 28 of 48 attempts for 468 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Georgia Southern scored 20 unanswered points after trailing 24-14. The Eagles took their first lead on Vantrease's 37-yard touchdown pass to Jalen White late in the third quarter. Alex Raynor's 41-yard field goal pushed the Eagles' lead to 34-24 early in the fourth. Centeio's 28-yard scoring pass to Reggie Brown cut Georgia Southern's lead to 34-31, and after Raynor's 24-yard field goal extended the Eagles' lead 37-31, Centeio put the Dukes back in front. Georgia Southern's Amare Jones had seven catches for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Khaleb Hood had eight catches for 131 yards and Jeremy Singleton had seven catches for 108 yards. It was Georgia Southern's second noteworthy win of the season, following a 45-42 win at Nebraska on Sept. 10. - Georgia Southern/AP College Football

Georgia Southern (3-1) trailed 23-20 after Ball State's Ben VonGunten kicked a 25-yard field goal with 12:39 remaining in the game. Georgia Southern was forced to punt on its next possession, but Anthony Beck II's punt pinned the Cardinals at their own 8-yard line. The Eagles' defense forced a three-and-out and they got the ball back on the Ball State 43-yard line. Six plays later Vantrease hit JJay Mcafee for a 7-yard touchdown and a 27-23 lead with 7:04 left. Ball State (1-3) was forced to punt and Vantrease threw a 47-yard scoring strike to Amare Jones to finish off a 10-play 86-yard drive and close out the win.

Kyle Vantrease scored on an 8-yard run with 36 seconds left after Nebraska had taken its first lead, and Georgia Southern beat the three-touchdown-favorite Cornhuskers 45-42 on Saturday night. The Huskers' Timmy Bleekrode was wide left with a 52-yard field goal attempt as time ran out, and Georgia Southern players ran onto the field to celebrate the program's first win in 13 games against Power Five opponents. The loss again turns up the pressure on embattled Nebraska coach Scott Frost, who now faces a home game next week against No. 7 Oklahoma. The Huskers (1-2) had come into the Georgia Southern game 214-0 when scoring at least 35 points at Memorial Stadium.

The Eagles (2-0) piled up 642 yards, none bigger than the 75 they moved in 11 plays for the winning touchdown. Kyle Vantrease converted a fourth-and-2 pass and threw 27 yards to Khaleb Hood before he took off up the middle on a designed quarterback run for the go-ahead score. Casey Thompson moved the Huskers from their 23 to the Eagles' 34 before Bleekrode pulled his field-goal try to the left. Nebraska had taken the lead on Thompson's 1-yard run with 3:05 left after Marques Buford's second interception of the game turned back the Eagles as they tried to build on a three-point lead. Thompson led the Huskers 98 yards in 15 plays. Thompson and Anthony Grant churned out yards on the ground and Marcus Washington made a catch at the 1 that was upheld on video review before Thompson went over the pile at the goal line. The victory comes in only the second game for Georgia Southern coach Clay Helton, and it came almost a year to the day that Southern California fired him two games into his seventh season. - Georgia Southern/AP College Football

Kyle Vantrease threw four touchdowns passes and Georgia Southern gave new coach Clay Helton a 59-7 victory over Morgan State on Saturday night. Vantrease put the ball up 46 times, completing 29 for 367 yards for a Georgia Southern program that has traditionally emphasized the run. He was intercepted once. Ten receivers made catches with Sam Kennerson grabbing seven passes for 99 yards and Khaleb Hood nabbing six for 88 and a touchdown. OJ Arnold and Jalen White had two scores each. It was 17-7 at halftime and 31-7 after three quarters before the Eagles added 28 points in the fourth. Alfonzo Graham rushed for 106 yards on 14 carries and Jordan Toles had a 50-yard pick-6 for the Bears, who have a new head coach in Damon Wilson. The Bears had four turnovers.   With the kickoff of the 2022 football season 40 days away, the Georgia Southern Athletics Department has announced its plans to celebrate 40 years of Eagle football in the modern era. Georgia Southern began playing football in 1924 as Georgia Normal School but suspended the sport after the 1941 season due to World War II. The Eagles resumed playing as an NAIA independent in 1982, and the first year of NCAA unclassified play was in 1983. In 1993, Georgia Southern joined the Southern Conference and began transitioning to the FBS in 2013 before beginning play in the Sun Belt Conference in 2014. The Eagles have won six NCAA Division I-AA national championships, 11 conference titles and three bowl games in their 40 years of uncompromised excellence. The Eagles will open the season on Saturday, Sept. 3 at home against Morgan State. - Georgia Southern Football

The Georgia Southern football team wrapped up their 2022 spring football season with the annual Blue/White game Saturday afternoon at Paulson Stadium. First year head coach Clay Helton got his first opportunity to hit the field with the Eagles with a good crowd on hand as around 4,000 fans came out and saw the Eagle offense put up over 700 yards of offense and 51 points as the White team beat the Blue team 51-28. Leading the offense was Buffalo transfer quarterback Kyle Vantrease who was 16-25 for 217 yards and one touchdown.

Vantrease feels the team has taken huge steps in the right direction and is excited about wrapping up spring and getting to know his teammates better. "This being my sixth year I know what we need next and that is bonding," said Vantrease. "Over the summer and into summer workouts that is the most important thing. A team that is connected is going to be a dangerous team. On the filed we just need more reps, but off the field is what is important right now." On the field Vantrease spread the ball around nicely with Houston transfer Jeremy Singleton getting the most targets (10) and receptions (6). Derwin Burgess led the way in yardage with three catches for 80 yards, while Khaleb Hood had three receptions and Sam Kennerson had the lone touchdown pass from Vantrease. - Savannah Morning News
