SEPT 12 AMERICAN ATHLETIC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Derek Parish, Sr., DE, Houston,...Parish set a pair of American Athletic Conference records in a 33-30 overtime loss at Texas Tech as he finished with 4.5 sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss among his 11 total tackles. His 4.5 sacks broke the old mark of 4.0, held by East Carolina's Montese Overton (in 2015) and SMU's Justin Lawler (in 2017), while his 6.5 tackles for loss broke the hold record of 6.0, set by Temple's Quincy Roche in 2019. Parish also had a forced fumble against the Red Raiders. - American Athletic Conference Football

Derek Parish discovered his strength at an early age. "I kind of had a feeling whenever you are 7 years old and your mom comes home with the groceries and you have to get all of them in one carry because you don't want to go back outside if you are playing a game or something," said Parish, the University of Houston's all-conference senior defensive end. His personal record? "Ten bags of groceries," Parish said with a laugh, adding, "with two-gallon milk jugs, eggs, bread. Think about that. You have some heavy stuff and some delicate stuff. You have to be able to grab them all." Years later, Parish is still doing the heavy lifting.

A video circulated on social media this offseason that showed Parish setting a personal best with a 425-pound power clean. He can back-squat 674 pounds. He can bench 425 pounds. All of that - not to mention he once ate 7 pounds of steak in one sitting - landed Parish on The Athletic's "Freaks List," a list of 100 players in college football that exhibit unique physical abilities. "It was humbling and an honor to be on that list," said Parish, who came in at No. 49. "No cockiness, but I wanted to be higher." - Houston Chronicle
