Eastern Michigan University junior quarterback Preston Hutchinson (Mason, Ohio-Mason) was named to the Maxwell Award preseason Watch List, the Maxwell Football Club announced today, July 19. It is the first time that Hutchinson has been named to the preseason watch list for the award that is given annually to the most outstanding player in college football. The award is proudly sponsored by Mammoth Tech and The Athletes' Corner, which are Executive Partners of the Maxwell Football Club. The Maxwell Award has been presented to the College Player of the Year since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert "Tiny" Maxwell who was a former standout at the Swarthmore College and a renowned sports writer and football official.

Assuming the role of quarterback in 2020 was Hutchinson, who recorded new career-highs in virtually every category. He put together an impressive junior season as he threw for 1,662 yards on 126-of-198 pass attempts, the 22nd most single-season passing yards by a QB in program history while notching two games with 300+ passing yards. The Mason, Ohio native tossed for 12 touchdowns, including a career-best four scores versus Toledo, Nov. 18, and added a career-best 87 rushing attempts for 206 yards and eight touchdowns. - Ann Arbor News

DEC 7 MAC WEST DIVISION CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Preston Hutchinson, Eastern Michigan, QB, Junior, Mason, Ohio (Mason),...Hutchinson threw for over 300 yards for the second time this season when he completed 19-of-30 pass attempts against Western Michigan, Dec. 5, to lift the Eagles over the MAC West-leading Broncos, 53-42. The effort saw Hutchinson rack up 315 yards through the air. He made first-half history against the Broncos as he finished the 30-minute stretch with 267 passing yards on 15-of-22 passing. That performance is the best by an Eagle in the first half of a game since Andy Schmitt went 38-of-52 for 354 yards and five touchdowns against Central Michigan, Nov. 28, 2008.

Hutchinson shined in his first-ever start for the Eagles on Oct. 19, 2019. In that game, which happened to be against Western Michigan, Hutchinson tossed for 357 yards and three TD's on 31-of-36 pass attempts. He added one rushing score in that game as well. The anniversary magic was real in Hutchinson's second meeting with the Broncos on Saturday, as he improved to 2-0 against EMU's in-state foe. In his second contest against WMU, his numbers were equally as good. He once again tossed for three touchdowns. In matching fashion to his 2019 performance, he also added a score with his legs. - MAC Football

Darius Boone Jr. ran 25 times for 148 yards and a touchdown and Samson Evans added 61 yards rushing and a TD run for the Eagles (1-4, 1-4 Mid-American Conference). The Broncos, whose only defensive stop came on the first drive of the game, scored two more touchdowns but remained unable to keep the Eagles from scoring. Despite the loss, Western Michigan’s game next week against Ball State will be for the MAC West title. Kaleb Eleby was 18 of 26 for 288 yards and four touchdowns for Western Michigan, and La’Darius Jefferson ran 21 times for 130 yards and two TDs. - Eastern Michigan/AP College Football

OCT 21/WEEK 8 MAC WEST DIVISION OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Eastern Michigan QB Preston Hutchinson,...Eastern Michigan sophomore quarterback Preston Hutchinson (Mason, Ohio) made his first collegiate start and led a 34-27 win over in-state rival Western Michigan. Hutchinson accounted for four touchdowns as he completed 31-36 passes for 357 yards and three passing touchdowns. He added nine yards rushing and his first-career rushing touchdown. His 86.1 completion percentage was the second-highest by an Eastern Michigan quarterback since the 1999 campaign, falling short of only Glass' 90-percent game against Coastal Carolina, Aug. 31.

Hutchinson's perfect game-winning drive was part of a fourth quarter that saw him complete 11-of-12 passes for 140 yards and a pair of long touchdown passes. He also made plays with his legs, finishing with 10 carries for 29 sack-adjusted yards, including a six-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter that gave Eastern Michigan its first lead of the game, 17-14.
