N.C. State had one of the worst rushing attacks in the ACC last year. Wolfpack head coach Dave Doeren thinks the return of left guard Chandler Zavala, who missed the final seven games last season with a back injury, will help remedy part of N.C. State's struggles with its ground game. "I do think the loss of Chandler Zavala was a bigger loss than probably people thought at the time," Doeren said. "He is a very good run blocker for us. Having him and Ickey (former N.C. State left tackle Ikem Ekwonu) next to each other presented a pretty good challenge to the defense as we were playing." Having Zavala back will certainly help, but there are more holes to fill to boost a running game that finished at No. 13 in the 14-team conference with two NFL running backs and a left tackle, Ekwonu, who went sixth overall in the draft. Zonovan Knight and Ricky Person combined for 1,389 rushing yards last season and 275 of the team's 372 rushing attempts. The team rushed for 11 touchdowns, the lowest total in the ACC. How N.C. State replaces Knight, Person and Ekwonu is a question players like running back Jordan Houston have grown tired of hearing all offseason. "But at the same time, it's a valid question," Houston said. - Raleigh News Observer

For about five months, N.C. State offensive guard Chandler Zavala was at the mercy of the NCAA. Having suffered season-ending injuries in two seasons, and losing another to the COVID-19 pandemic, Zavala was seeking a sixth year of eligibility. Initially, the NCAA denied his request, effectively ending his collegiate career. In early May, the NCAA reversed course. Now, he enters the 2022 season looking to help fill a void on the offensive line and grateful for the support he received from N.C. State during his off-field battle with the NCAA.

After transferring to N.C. State from Division II Fairmont State, Zavala (6-5, 325) started the first five games of the 2021 season for the Wolfpack. In those five games, the Pack averaged 172 rushing yards - twice rushing for more than 200 yards, including 293 yards rushing in the team's opener against South Florida. Zavala's season was cut short due to injury - for the second time in his collegiate career - when he suffered a back injury on Oct. 2 during N.C. State's game against Louisiana Tech. He had surgery in November, and thought he would be granted an additional year of eligibility for the time he missed. - Raleigh News Observer

The drama surrounding the return of N.C. State lineman Chandler Zavala to the school for a sixth year of football eligibility has reached a conclusion. Zavala posted to social media Thursday night that he is returning to the Wolfpack, meaning the NCAA reversed course on a waiver exemption it had originally denied. "I'm grateful for the opportunity to comeback and represent the wolfpack for another year. Let's run it back!! Thank you all for the endless support," Zavala wrote in a tweet.

"So thankful for Chandler getting the opportunity to finish his career this fall!" N.C. State head coach Dave Doeren said in an official statement released later Thursday night. "It's been a long process for him and he is such an incredible young man. I am super appreciative to our compliance office, Boo Corrigan, and Chandler's attorney for supporting and fighting for him. I can't wait to see #64 back on the grass with his brothers and coaches!" Doeren was more to the point in a post on his Twitter account: "So Happy for Chandler and thankful he gets to finish his journey with this team and staff!!!" Zavala, his family and the university had said in April they were considering legal action if their final appeal to the NCAA was denied. - Raleigh News Observer
