 DeMarvion Overshown, Texas, Player News

Texas safety-turned-linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is preparing for the NFL Draft after wrapping up his best season as a Longhorn. Overshown played a massive role in turning around the Texas defense in 2022. He totaled 96 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and four sacks, earning first-team All-Big 12 honors for his efforts. Overshown also displayed strong leadership abilities as a two-year captain for the team. Since spinning down to linebacker from the safety spot ahead of the 2020 season, Overshown has seen steady improvement each year. With a better grasp of the position since developing under Pete Kwiatkowski and Jeff Chaote, he is ready to take on the professional level. - USA Today

DeMarvion Overshown was the team's leading tackler from a year ago, making 74 stops and along with third-leading tackler Jaylan Ford, Texas has experience at the linebacker position. D'Shawn Jamison, like Overshown, is a super senior and made 48 tackles at cornerback last season and junior Jerrin Thompson made five starts at safety a year ago. Texas was also bolstered by a couple of key transfers with Ryan Watts coming in from Ohio State to play safety and Diamone Tucker-Dorsey arriving from James Madison. Perhaps the most glaring hole on a defense that certainly had a few of them was the lack of a pass rush. No Longhorn had more than 2.5 sacks a year ago and if and how Texas can improve on that could go a long way in determining the efficiency of the unit. - Charleston Gazette-Mail

When the Texas Longhorns start spring practice on Tuesday for the first time under new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the first time in two seasons, junior linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is among seven players who will not participate due to injuries, the school announced on Monday. Entering his second season as a starter at linebacker, Overshown recently underwent surgery on his shoulder to correct a torn labrum. Since Overshown has not spent a full offseason at the position and wanted to gain weight to better handle the demands of playing closer to the line of scrimmage, it's a disappointing development for him and for the team. He's expected to return at some point in the summer before preseason training camp begins. - Burnt Orange Nation

One of the top defenders for the Texas Longhorns will be back in 2021. On Tuesday, junior linebacker DeMarvion Overshown announced that he'll return for his senior season. The decision by the 6'4, 217-pounder makes Overshown the most high-profile player to announce his return for another season on the Forty Acres as five captains have opted out to declare for the 2021 NFL Draft. Ranked as the No. 52 player nationally and the No. 6 safety in the 2018 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Overshown always faced questions about his eventual position thanks to his large frame that made him something of a tweener. - Burnt Orange Nation

Saturday marked 714 days since Joshua Moore last took the field for the Texas Longhorns and 435 days since Moore was arrested in downtown Austin for carrying a loaded gun without a license, prompting a season-long suspension that kept Moore off the field in 2019. Moore only needed one play to spectacularly mark his return to Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, catching a pass on the first play from scrimmage for the Longhorns and racing 78 yards for the touchdown. In an interview with the media on Tuesday, Moore admitted that he didn't necessarily expect to make a play that quickly, but he did have confidence in himself to make an impact during his first game for the Longhorns in nearly two years. "I know what I bring to the table," Moore said. "I kind of figured, I haven't played for a year and a half, Saturday was my first game back, and just me being who I am, the competitor that I am, I knew I would make a big break at some point in the game. It didn't surprise me that it was the first play of the game. I knew, like I said, I was going to have some success during the game."

Moore did indeed have some success, even after the opening play, leading the team with six receptions for 127 yards on seven recorded targets. There was some room for improvement, as Moore wasn't on the same page as senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger on one play, breaking off a route that Ehlinger expected him to continue deep, dropped a difficult, contested catch, and missed a block when he was lined up as the single receiver. Still, Moore was able to provide the best evidence yet of his explosiveness since he arrived at Texas. - Burnt Orange Nation

Texas football player DeMarvion Overshown has ended his personal boycott and resumed his football career. Overshown tweeted on Thursday that it "Feels good to be back in my element." A UT spokesperson confirmed that Overshown is participating in the team's strength and conditioning program. This is the first week this summer that attendance at the football program's workouts has been required instead of voluntary. On July 2, Overshown announced that he would not take part in any team activities. While explaining his decision, Overshown said he was not pleased with the administration's pace in addressing concerns that a number of student-athletes had made about racial issues on the Texas campus. Overshown said that "I can not continue to perform for a program that doesn't show me the same love and support I do for them." This Monday, Texas did deliver its response to those concerns. The school pledged a series of changes that included the renaming of Robert Lee Moore Hall and an investment into the recruitment of Black students. - Austin American Statesman
