Will Honas, Kansas State, Player News
|
It is beginning to sound like Kansas State will be without one of its most experienced players for the remainder of the season. Will Honas, a 6-foot-2 and 233-pound linebacker from Wichita, is not expected to suit up for the Wildcats anytime soon. "I don 't believe so," K-State football coach Chris Klieman said on Tuesday. "I think the injuries that Will has had are probably not going to allow for him to move forward. We are still holding out hope, but he has had quite a bit of damage on some injuries th roughout his time." Honas enrolled at K-State in the spring after beginning his college football career at Butler Community College and then spending the next four seasons at Nebraska. He was expected to make an impact on defense for the Wildcats i n his final year of eligibility...if he could stay healthy. But things haven't played out that way. "It has been tough on him, I know that," Klieman said. "He has been at every game and at every practice. It is probably not responding the way he hoped it would." Honas, who suffered multiple season-ending injuries while he was with the Cornhuskers, was limited during preseason practices as he dealt with nagging knee injuries. Those issued lingered into the season, and he has been unable to suit up for an y of K-State's first five games. The Wildcats had high hopes for Honas when he decided to transfer to K-State. Honas made 144 tackles, including four sacks, during his time with the Huskers. - The Kansas City Star

Linebacker Will Honas and defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah spent the open portion of Monday morning's practice pedaling away on stationary bikes, rather than participating in drills with their position groups. Their coaches said Tuesday that holding th em out was strictly a matter of limiting stress on pre-existing injuries that kept them out during spring practice, and that they should be good to go once the season starts Sept. 3 against South Dakota.Honas, a graduate transfer from Nebraska, is expected to be an immediate contributor at weak-side linebacker, but he has a history of knee problems. "With the knee surgeries that he's had, just like with (linebacker) Nick Allen," linebackers coach Steve standard said. "We've got to be careful abou t how much wear and tear we put on those guys, and they've been good communicators with us and let us know how it's feeling. "(Honas) is feeling it like you would if you had your knee fixed twice. He's had two ACLs. His knee's probably feel like mine som etimes." - Topeka Capital Journal

Honas' return to use the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA puts him in a unique position. He's a junior college player who now will log four seasons at a Division I college, too. Honas has steadily grown into a regular for the Huskers. He suf fered a knee injury in 2018, played better late in the season in 2019 as he got back to fully healthy and then took another step forward in 2020. He's the bridge to a wave of young players, and he'll be looked to as the leader in Ruud's group this fall. Honas' return helped fortify what could end up being a deep group for the Huskers. Reimer burst onto the scene in 2020 and Ruud said the Lincoln North Star graduate's challenge is to be one of the best in the Big Ten. Henrich has moved between inside and outside, but settled in and played the best of his young career late in the season inside. Then there's Kolarevic, a graduate transfer from Northern Iowa who has two years of eligibility remaining and arrived on campus in January. - Lincoln Journal Star

Will Honas emerged as a staple of Nebraska's defense in 2020. Now he's poised to be just the same in 2021. The senior inside linebacker announced Thursday morning he's returning to school for an extra season and will be back with the Huskers for 2021. Ho nas is coming off his best collegiate season and will look to build on it thanks to the extra season of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Wichita, Kansas, native played in seven of NU's eight games in 2020 and finished second on the team in tackles with 57. He tied senior outside linebacker JoJo Domann with a team-best 6 1/2 tackles for loss, adding a team-leading three sacks. He projects as a defensive leader next season. - Lincoln Journal Star
