 Caleb Tannor, Nebraska, Player News

  08/02/22 - OLB Caleb TannorrSr/2023, Nebraska, 6-3, 237 (DS#85 OLB) + More +

For the first time in several years, Caleb Tannor was ready to talk. The veteran edge rusher has been a key part of Nebraska's pass rush efforts for the last four seasons, but he hasn't always been one of the vocal leaders on that front. In a rare appearance at Friday's post-practice news conference, Tannor explained what had changed. "I told them boys that I'm not doing (any) interviews until we started winning some games," Tannor said. "… I've been here four or five years and it's about that time to go to a bowl game. "I feel like I've matured off the field and off the field; when I realized it was bigger than me, that's when everything changed." It's clear from Tannor's demeanor - he's ready to play a much bigger role as a leader in 2022.

He's totaled 82 tackles and 7 1/2 sacks over his four-year Husker career, and NU is seeking an even bigger contribution than the 33 tackles and two sacks he provided a year ago. In a talented edge rusher group, defensive coordinator Erik Chinander sees Tannor as one of his top options. "Last year in camp I think we saw a glimpse of what (Tannor) could be, and I think in the spring and through the fall we saw what we expected out of him the whole time," Chinander said. "I think he has developed himself as a really good player and is doing a lot of really good things right now." - Lincoln Journal Star

In every position group, it's important to have a leader who sets the standard for the rest of the room. At Nebraska's EDGE position, there are two of them - Caleb Tannor and Garrett Nelson. During a Monday night appearance on "Sports Nightly," Nebraska defensive line/edge rushers coach Mike Dawson identified Tannor and Nelson as the trendsetters in his room. It's not much of a surprise, considering the duo totaled 17 tackles for loss and seven sacks a year ago. But, there's still plenty of work for those two veterans to accomplish this fall. "With both of them, it's about continuing to progress," Dawson said. "Garrett's body is continuing to grow and mature; he came from playing as a freshman undersized, where now I'd think pound-for-pound he'll be as strong as most of the guys in the league. He's got to understand that we need the production."

While Nelson's growth has been in a physical sense, Dawson said Tannor has come along with the mental side. Tannor is growing more familiar with the EDGE position, and attacking different types of blocking schemes will help the senior make more plays this season, Dawson said. Nelson and Tannor's work ethic has already rubbed off on redshirt freshmen Jimari Butler and Blaise Gunnerson, who Dawson said have been standout performers in the offseason training program. - Lincoln Journal Star

Nebraska coaches have been high on the athletic package the third-year player brings to the table, but he has not yet turned that into an every-down role. On the edge, Tannor doesn't have the ideal build for an every-down player at 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, but he's shown flashes of disruptive ability. Part of the question is what his role will be. Will he be asked to hold up in run support often? Is he a pass-rush specialist? In addition, he'll be playing under first-year outside linebackers coach Mike Dawson, who before spring ball talked about Tannor and used the word that seems like it will be the most important indicator of where the Georgia native goes from here. "He's got to develop consistency in everything he's doing," Dawson said. "He's going to have to help us, and he's going to have to help us early," defensive coordinator Erik Chinander added. "And if he can't, you know, once you get to be that junior age, if you can't help anymore, some young guy has to get a shot." - Lincoln Journal Star
