TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 2: 27. Ryan Hayes, rSr, OT, Michigan, 6-6, 307, 1,...Michigan's entire line was dominant in a 56-10 win over Hawaii, now 0-3. The Wolverines rolled to 588 yards in total offense, 320 in the air and 268 on the ground. P revious week, No. 28: Michigan gained 440 total yards, with 234 of that on the ground, but left tackle Ryan Hayes had nothing to do with it. In a surprise, he was in street clothes on the sideline. The Wolverines also lost Karson Barnhart in the first qu arter and shifted their line, moving guard Trevor Keegan to tackle and inserting freshman Giovanni El-Hadi at guard. No problem. Michigan scored four touchdowns rushing, surrendered just one sack and allowed two hurries. Coach Jim Harbaugh pointed out th at the unit accounted for just one penalty, a hold, and "No false starts, no delay of games." He stopped short of saying it was due to good coaching. - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

If you needed another reason to get excited about Michigan's offensive prospects this fall, look no further than Phil Steele. The long-time college football analyst and author of the annual namesake preview magazine, Steele ranks the Wolverines' offensiv e line No. 1 in the country heading into the 2022 season. In his magazine, on newsstands now (and available for purchase online), Steele says Michigan's front five could become the first-ever repeat winners of the Joe Moore Award. The unit returns three full-time starters and its position coach and co-offensive coordinator, Sherrone Moore, who adds play-calling duties this season. "They lose two starters but add Virginia transfer Olusegun Oluwatimi at center, and he joins 14 (very highly touted re cruits) on the unit, including second-team Big Ten left tackle Ryan Hayes," Steele writes. "They average 316 pounds and have 87 career starts." Steele is big on experience and returning production, and Michigan has that again this fall - returning starti ng left tackle Ryan Hayes, starting right guard Zak Zinter and starting left guard Trevor Keegan. While center Andrew Vastardis has elected to move on, the unit has seemingly upgraded with Oluwatimi, a graduate transfer who was a finalist for the Rimingt on Trophy last season. - Ann Arbor News

Ryan Hayes, the well-liked kid from northern Michigan, has an opportunity of a lifetime this fall. A former tight end and defensive end in high school, Hayes was plucked from Traverse City West in 2018 by a Michigan coaching staff with a plan. Then-assis tant Greg Frey, the team's tackles and tight ends coach, had envisioned turning the 6-foot-7, 252-pound athletic kid into a tackle. And when Ed Warinner took the job in 2018, he made sure to see it through. Now, more than four years, Hayes returns as the anchor of the Wolverines' offensive line coming off an historic season. He's a shoe-in to start at left tackle, a position he settled into in 2020, and with that comes super-sized expectations. "I love Ryan, every way since he came in," Jim Harbau gh recently told reporters. "He was kind of a tween'er, under-sized offensive lineman/tight end. He was a tight end (in high school) and we saw a great vision for him to turn into an elite offensive tackle." - Ann Arbor News

Michigan has already determined three starters along the offensive line for this season, but only one of them is locked in to a specific position. And turns out, what happens this month in preseason camp - and who, specifically wins jobs inside - could d etermine where the other two play. With new offensive line coach Sherrone Moore in charge up front, the Wolverines have reverted back to their philosophy of playing their five best players. "Ryan Hayes is starting," Jim Harbaugh explained last month at B ig Ten Media Days. "(Andrew) Stueber is starting. Zak Zinter is starting. Those three are solid." Only Hayes, a redshirt junior from Traverse City, is locked in at left tackle. Michigan's coaching staff has always viewed Hayes' long, athletic frame as th at of a natural tackle, which is where he'll stay. Meanwhile, Stueber and Zinter are considered versatile and could play one of two spots. Stueber lined up at tackle and guard last year, while Zinter is in the running inside at either guard or center. - Ann Arbor News

The Michigan football team's least-experienced position group on offense just got even younger following the planned departure of Jalen Mayfield. Mayfield, a junior with just 13 starts under his belt, made an announcement Tuesday night that he was going to forego his remaining college eligibility and declare for the NFL draft. His decision came just one week after the Big Ten said it was postponing all fall sports, including football, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The league hopes to resume play in the spring, but it left high-upside players like Mayfield in a bind when it came to the 2021 NFL Draft, scheduled for April 29 to May 1 in Cleveland. The 6-foot-5, 320-pound Mayfield opted to take the plunge and bet on himself in uncertain times, leavi ng the Wolverines with a significant experience gap when they do resume. And assuming there is a spring season, Michigan will have to figure out who replaces Mayfield at right tackle. The obvious move is to slide Ryan Hayes over from left tackle to right . Back in February, Michigan offensive line coach Ed Warinner said Hayes, a 6-foot-7, 302-pound junior from Traverse City who started the first two games of the 2019 season at left tackle, spent most of his time in 2019 on the right side backing up Mayfi eld. He felt Hayes was better in a left-handed stance than Mayfield, which explained the plan for fall 2020. - Ann Arbor News
