"History lessons for the boys, anytime they come into the office," said Bellamy, who played for the Wolverines from 1999-2002. "We just talk about the legacy of Michigan football and the great tradition of wide receiver play." And then occasionally they' ll talk about building their own legacy as a group, blessed with a depth of talent that Michigan perhaps hasn't seen at the position in a generation. A group that Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, as enthusiastic as ever heading into his eighth season at the helm in Ann Arbor, insists has "the ability to be the best we've ever had." On paper, that's hard to argue at the moment, with the Wolverines returning 10 of their top 11 receivers from last season's Big Ten championship roster, including a fifth-ye ar senior leader in Ronnie Bell - Bellamy calls him "Alpha" - who was the unit's clear-cut No. 1 option last fall before suffering a torn ACL in the opener. But now Bell's back as well, and after setting new personal bests in agility testing this s ummer, "he looks like his old self again," said Sherrone Moore, Michigan's offensive co-coordinator. Bell is winning 1-on-1 battles, making contested catches in team drills and having fun - "a lot of fun," he says - in fall camp, which is a stark contras t to all those mind-numbing months of injury rehab. "I've been thinking about playing the game for a year now," he said. "I'm beyond excited, man. I'm ready to go." - Detroit News

Ronnie Bell looked forward to the day he could return to the practice field for Michigan. The former all-Big Ten honorable mention wideout missed most of the 2021 season, sidelined in the team's opener with a torn ACL suffered on a freak incident returni ng a punt. Now, nearly 11 months later, Bell said he's healthy and back practicing at full speed with the Wolverines. "I feel blessed. I feel beyond excited about every single day," Bell told reporters on Friday. "I feel really good. My body feels great making plays. It's a lot of fun."Bell described the first couple of practices in camp as rusty, with the 6-foot, 190-pound receiver still trying to get his bearings around him. He had worked out for months by himself, running routes and catching b alls with no one defending him. The last couple of weeks have allowed him to shake the anxiety. "I don't know what day it was, but I finally jumped up and made a play on the ball in one of the early days of camp," Bell said. "And it was like the biggest weight was lifted off my shoulder that I think I've ever had. "Since then, I feel like I've been back and rolling." Michigan really missed Bell's expertise and influence in the passing game last season. He was the Wolverines' oldest and most productive o ption at the position, evident by the first play he made last season (before the injury) - a 76-yard touchdown catch and run against Western Michigan. - Ann Arbor News

After taking it easy this spring. the final few months on his road to recovery, Michigan wide receiver Ronnie Bell says he's been cleared to play football again. Bell appeared Sunday afternoon at a youth football camp sponsored by The Uniform Funding Fou ndation at Father Gabriel Richard High School and said he's in the final stages of a nine-month healing and rehabilitation process following a torn ACL in his right knee. "I think I'm doing (well); I'm kind of wrapping up the process," Bell told a small group of reporters. "Just feeling real strong and just taking everyday step by step." These days, Bell can run, jump and cut again and is working toward reconditioning himself for the grind of football.Michigan's football team began player-led wor kouts last week in Ann Arbor and will open camp in early-August, the ultimate test as to where the 6-foot, 192-pound wideout stands physically. "My eye looks like Ronnie Bell before he injured the ACL," Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters last wee k. "Just the way he's moving; I see him jump, I see him run, I see him cut. Definitely on track and looks about the same as he did before - maybe even better." Harbaugh even pointed out that Bell has two more months to get stronger and faster, and the fo rmer all-Big Ten honoree says he plans to make the most of it. - Ann Arbor News

Michigan Stadium was silent when Ronnie Bell went down with an injury in the season opener as more than 100,000 fans feared the worse. It was almost as if they knew what was coming. Two days later, coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed that Bell is out for the ye ar with a knee injury. "It's a shame," Harbaugh said Monday. Bell had a 76-yard touchdown reception and returned a punt 31 yards before injuring his right knee in a 47-14 win over Western Michigan. "It will be very difficult to replace Ronnie Bell," Harb augh said. "Really tough. Seasoned. Experienced. Tremendous blocker. So competitive and such a gamer. "Now somebody has to try to fill those shoes." Harbaugh appeared to get defensive when asked more than once by reporters about having Bell, perhaps his best player, on special teams. "The best players play," he said, recalling Heisman Trophy winners Desmond Howard and Charles Woodson returned punts at Michigan. The Wolverines (1-0) host No. 20 Washington (0-1) on Saturday night. The Huskies likely will drop out of The Associated Press college football poll on Tuesday after becoming the first ranked FBS team in five years to lose to a FCS team, falling to Montana 13-7. Washington will face Michigan without Bell, who was the team's leading receiver last season and an All-Big Ten honorable mention selection in 2019 after leading the team in receiving. Bell, who started 17 of 33 games, has 83 career receptions for 1,380 yards and five touchdowns. His absence leaves a void on and off the field. - AP College Football

Ronnie Bell had a 76-yard touchdown reception and returned a punt 31 yards before being injured in Michigan's 47-14 victory over Western Michigan on Saturday. The Wolverines (1-0) won the game easily, but they may have lost their best player for a while. "Just worried about Ronnie Bell right now," coach Jim Harbaugh acknowledged. Bell was hurt on a punt return in the second quarter and kept weight off his right leg as he was helped off the field by a teammate and staff member. The senior receiver was la ter carted off the field and up the tunnel toward the team's locker room to be further evaluated. "What can you say other than you hope for the best, expect the worst, and wait until you get the MRI results?" Harbaugh asked. "But no matter what, he'll be back."The Broncos (0-1) started strong - making it 7-all on La'Darius Jefferson's 2-yard run and trailing by just three points after the first quarter - but could not sustain success on either side of the ball. "We moved the ball fairly well," We stern Michigan coach Tim Lester said. "We just didn't finish drives, and we didn't protect our QB well enough." Michigan pulled away with 17 points in the second quarter, scoring on Bell's catch, Hassan Haskins' 22-yard run and Jake Moody's 20-yard field goal. Blake Corum, who had 111 yards rushing, opened the scoring with a 14-yard reception and his 30-yard touchdown run put the Wolverines ahead 40-7 early in the final quarter. - Michigan/AP College Football

Regardless of who will be Michigan's starting quarterback by the time it gets to The Game, Bell will be his No. 1 target. He's been the Wolverines' leader in catches and yards the past two seasons and the same will be the expectation in his third year as a starter. He'll get production but has never been an endzone threat the way you'd like from your top option. He scored once in 2020, once in 2019 and has four touchdowns in his career. That's the next step in his progression as a wide receiver and he'l l get plenty of chances to accomplish that in a normal 12-game schedule.Ohio State's secondary should be better in 2021 and a full offseason provides Kerry Coombs and Matt Barnes with options and some needed depth. But that group is still the bigg est question mark of the defense even with the linebackers losing all four impact players. As past games have shown, even a breakout game from him isn't enough to secure a Michigan win against any opponent -- especially one that scored 118 points in the last two meetings and probably would've again surpassed the 50-point margin had The Game happened last season. But a potential upgrade at quarterback and offensive coordinator Josh Gattis being in Year Three as a coordinator could be the right mix that a llows a big game from Bell to make things interesting. - Cleveland Plain Dealer
