Ben VanSumeren, Michigan State, Player News

Michigan State football linebacker Ben VanSumeren withdrew from the NCAA transfer portal 35 days after entering it. The redshirt senior remained on the roster throughout the past month, practicing with the team before playing in the Michigan State's "spring game" on Saturday. He is the second Spartans linebacker this offseason to explore a potential transfer before deciding against it. Sophomore Ma'a Gaoetote previously spent 13 days in the portal before choosing to remain in East Lansing this past winter. VanSumeren appeared in all 13 games last season, logging 122 defensive snaps while contributing on special teams. - Lansing State Journal

Ben VanSumeren is switching sides in the battle for the Paul Bunyan Trophy. The Michigan redshirt sophomore linebacker who entered the transfer portal on Feb. 12 announced his commitment to Michigan State on Saturday. That's a position of need for the Spartans, who are thin on linebacker depth. VanSumeren, an Essexville Garber High School graduate, has three seasons of eligibility remaining and won't officially become a Spartan until he enrolls. His younger brother, Alex VanSumeren, is a 2022 four-star defensive tackle at Essexville Garber who decommitted from Michigan on Feb. 11 and Michigan State is among the schools recruiting him. - Ann Arbor News

The University of Michigan seemed to have a two-for-one package with the VanSumeren brothers. But it appears both Ben and Alex VanSumeren have slipped away from the Wolverines on the same day. Redshirt sophomore linebacker Ben VanSumeren announced that he is entering the NCAA transfer portal, leaving the Michigan football team after three seasons. Little brother Alex VanSumeren - one of the nation's top defensive line prospects for the Class of 2022 -- announced he is decommitting from Michigan and exploring other offers. - Ann Arbor News

Michigan football has a new member of its defense. Ben VanSumeren, who played the last two seasons at fullback, is now a linebacker for the Wolverines, he revealed over the weekend on social media. Asked by a fan on Twitter if he sees himself continuing as a fullback or moving to tight end in the offense, VanSumeren replied: "I am now a LB ;)" Michigan never released an updated roster this spring, so the move went unannounced by the coaching staff. It's unclear when the change occurred, or what precipitated it, but it's not entirely unexpected.

The 6-foot-2, 244-pound VanSumeren was recruited to Michigan in 2017 as an athlete after he played both sides of the ball at Garber High School in Essexville, where he was a three-star prospect. He amassed 1,053 yards rushing and 17 touchdowns, had 176 catches for 2,888 yards and 29 touchdowns, and had an impressive senior season at linebacker -- totaling 43 tackles (four for a loss) and a sack. VanSumeren played sparingly during his first two seasons at Michigan, appearing in nine games, four of which came exclusively on special teams, and saw no carries in 2018. Because he only played in four games that season, he recouped another season of eligibility, making him a redshirt sophomore in 2020. - Ann Arbor News
