Baylor's Dillon Doyle may not be the second coming of Kordell Stewart, but he slashed between two sides of the football rather nicely in 2021. Not only did the linebacker rank second on the Bears with 91 tackles, but he also made several key plays on off ense as a part-time fullback. He even scored a pair of touchdowns in a win over BYU. So, could Doyle's success as a two-way threat lead to Baylor experimenting with more guys going both ways in 2022, at least in certain situations? They're not about to r ule it out. "We have a history of that, right? (Running back) Abram Smith was a linebacker, I played a little bit of offense last year," Doyle said. "But I think those questions will be answered as needs arise. But it's not out of the question."Ba ylor coach Dave Aranda said that he envisions that Doyle will continue to have a role offensively in his senior season, even while maintaining his myriad defensive responsibilities. As for whether Doyle will have buddies in that regard, it remains to be seen, Aranda said. "There wasn't a bunch of that in the spring. I think there'll be more of that in the fall, with our complete team," Aranda said. "We've got a few guys among the young guys who could play in various spots (both ways). So we'll be excite d to see that develop." - Waco Tribune Herald

Terrel Bernard wasn't just a three-time all-Big 12 linebacker, he was a tremendous leader with an exemplary work ethic that made his Baylor teammates want to follow. Talk about going out with a bang: In Baylor's 21-7 Sugar Bowl win over Ole Miss, Bernard amassed a career-high 20 tackles and two sacks in his final game as a senior. Those are Mike Singletary numbers. With Bernard gone, fifth-year senior Dillon Doyle is the obvious next man up to take over the leadership role for Baylor's linebackers . "It's a pleasure, it's great to just have that guy around," said Baylor defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach Ron Roberts. "Not just what he provides as a good player, but what he provides from a leadership standpoint and how to do things. He's first-class in everything. I can't say enough about him, and you guys know that." After transferring from Iowa, Doyle has started for Baylor for the past two seasons. He's coming off a tremendous junior year as he ranked second behind Bernard with 89 tackles with nine for loss along with an interception and a forced fumble. Nicknamed Diesel, Doyle even stepped in at fullback occasionally on the goal line as he ran for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass. He's more than ready to take over leade rship roles that Bernard and All-America safety Jalen Pitre carried last season for Baylor's defense. - Waco Tribune Herald

Abram Smith and Dillon Doyle were quite a 1-2 running punch for Baylor, providing future Big 12 foe and 19th-ranked BYU a glimpse at what the Cougars could face in their new conference. Smith ran for 188 yards with three touchdowns, while linebacker and part-time fullback Doyle scored on both of his offensive touches in a 38-24 win Saturday. "Obviously not our best game," BYU coach Kilani Sitake said. "We just were out-physicaled today, so that was a difficult game to accept...Really got a good gut-chec k." Baylor (6-1) led by only three points midway through the third quarter before Doyle caught a 2-yard TD pass from Gerry Bohanon.Smith ran for a 7-yard score about 3 1/2 minutes later to make it 31-14, after TJ Franklin's sack that forced a fumb le by Cougars quarterback Jaren Hall. "This was a standard game...I think is a big thing for us, having it come from the inside, intrinsically being able to push yourself," second-year Bears coach Dave Aranda said. "That's a big step in the right directi on." BYU (5-2) last month accepted an invitation to join the Big 12 Conference starting in the 2023 season. The Cougars have lost back-to-back games for the first time since the end of 2019, after a 5-0 start that included three wins over Pac-12 teams an d peaking at No. 10 in the AP Top 25. - Baylor/AP College Football
