Nick Roberts, Southern Methodist, Player News

SMU added another newcomer on Wednesday, gaining a commitment from former Louisiana-Monroe safety Nick Roberts. Roberts (5-foot-11, 175 pounds) was a junior for the Warhawks last season. He had seven total tackles and an interception. Roberts was originally a three-star recruit in the Class of 2017 out of Orange Park, Florida. He signed with USF over offers from Miami (FL), Cincinnati and others. Roberts spent four seasons at USF. After redshirting his freshman season, he made an impact for the Bulls, recording 73 tackles and three interceptions. He had 63 tackles and two interceptions the following year. In 2020, Roberts played in six games and recorded 39 total tackles. - Dallas Morning News

USF veteran safety Nick Roberts announced via social media Tuesday he is entering the NCAA transfer portal, four days after ESPN's cameras captured him exiting the sideline during the Bulls' 42-13 loss to Tulsa. A junior from Jacksonville, Roberts indicated the decision came "after weeks of consideration." "It was a hard decision, but I strongly stand by it for the sake of my future," Roberts said in a five-paragraph statement. Speculation about Roberts' future has grown since Friday's contest, when he was spotted walking off minus pads in the second half of USF's fifth consecutive loss. Roberts said he was ordered to leave the field after being told he wouldn't play in the remainder of the game following an argument. In his postgame press conference, Coach Jeff Scott indicated he had only been informed about what led to Roberts' exit and would address it the following week. "I was disappointed overall seeing how some of our players reacted," Scott said. "I know they're frustrated, but I really felt like it was the first time all year that I saw some guys doing some disappointing things. Hey, in Year 1, that's the things we've got to correct and clean up. I just challenged them after the game, I said, 'Hey, it's on all of us, coaches and players." - Tampa Tribune
