D.J. Mack Jr., Old Dominion, Player News

D.J. Mack, Jr. rushed for three touchdowns as Old Dominion piled up a program-record 358 rushing yards to defeat Hampton 47-7 on Saturday night. The victory gave first-year coach Ricky Rahne a win in his debut before 18,363 at S.B. Ballard Stadium and ended the Monarch's 12-game losing streak that dated back to the 2019 opener - a span of 741 days. Mack scored on runs of 13, 3 and 4 yards and also threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Spencer. Nick Rice kicked four field goals. Five Monarchs gained the record 358 yards rushing on 54 carries. The previous best had been 340 yards.

Mack also passed for 162 yards as Old Dominion (1-1) rebounded from a 42-10 opening loss at Wake Forest by gaining 572 yards total offense while holding the Pirates(1-1) to 167. Rahne was hired away from Penn State, where he was offensive coordinator, after the 2019 season and waited 21 months for his first win with Old Dominion as the Monarchs sat out 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Elijah Davis rushed eight times for 109 yards in the first half before heading to the bench with an injury. He was replaced by Jon-Luke Peaker, who rushed 18 times for 141 yards. Jett Duffey passed for 83 yards and a touchdown for Hampton (1-1). - Old Dominion/AP College Football

Mack, the 2016 Abe Goldblatt All-Tidewater Player of the Year, will have two years of eligibility. Mack, 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, spent his freshman season on the scout team at UCF. He had his coming-out party as a redshirt freshman when he played in 10 games, including three starts. He threw for 619 yards and three touchdowns, and also rushed for 337 yards and six touchdowns. - The Virginian Pilot

Darriel Mack Jr. threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score, Dillon Gabriel threw a touchdown pass and Central Florida held off Tulane 34-31 on Saturday to keep its hopes for a third straight American Athletic Conference championship alive. Tulane scored 24 second-half points and closed to the final tally after UCF recovered an onside kick. The Knights (8-3, 5-2) entered having lost three games by a combined seven points but jumped to a 10-0 lead after Dylan Barnas's 35-yard field goal and Gabriel's 23-yard scoring pass to Marlon Williams (nine catches for 119 yards). Otis Anderson's 44-yard scoring run put the Knights up 17-7 at halftime.

Mack scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter and his 2-yard pass to Anthony Roberson gave the Knights a 31-17 lead before Barnas kicked what proved to be the winning 26-yard field goal. Stephon Huderson returned a kickoff 98 yards for a score for Tulane (6-5, 3-4). Corey Dauphine ran for two TDs and the Green Wave closed to 34-24 after his 7-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. After stopping the Knights on downs, Tulane's Justin McMillan threw a 7-yard TD pass to Jalen McCleskey on fourth-and-goal with 26 seconds to play and UCF recovered the ensuing onside kick to seal it. Gabriel was 24 of 46 for 317 passing yards for UCF. McMillan was 13 of 27 for 181 yards passing and rushed for 102 yards on 23 carries for Tulane. - Central Florida/AP College Football

UCF quarterback Darriel Mack Jr. suffered a broken ankle during a "non-football related activity" and it is unclear when he will be able to resume playing football, the school announced Wednesday. "Quarterback Darriel Mack Jr. suffered a broken ankle from non-football related activity this week and there is no specific timetable for his return. He will not be available for training camp," UCF coach Josh Heupel said in a statement. "We hope Darriel has a speedy recovery, but we are excited about the talent we have in the quarterback room to start the season."

With Milton expected to miss all of the 2019-20 season while recovering from a knee injury that nearly led to the amputation of his leg, Mack was one of four quarterbacks competing for the starting job in the fall along with Notre Dame transfer Brandon Wimbush, redshirt freshman Quadry Jones and true freshman Dylan Gabriel. - Orlando Sentinel
