Palaie Gaoteote IV, Ohio State, Player News

With the exception of an occasional stand-up pass rusher, Larry Johnson built his menacing Ohio State football defensive fronts with a standard four down lineman approach. New defensive coordinator Jim Knowles brought with him a new wrinkle for that front - a hybrid defensive end/linebacker position known either as the Jack or the Leo. Instead of attacking only off the edge, that player can float around the defensive line in Knowles' attempt to create confusion. Johnson said Tuesday that defensive ends Javontae Jean-Baptiste and Jack Sawyer and linebacker Palaie Gaoteote IV are the three players primarily training for that position.

That oversight falls to him - an evolution he said he has enjoyed. "I like the new tool," Johnson said. "I like what we're doing right now defensively. I think coach Knowles has got a great system, and I like how he's allowed the guys who have the ability to play and use their ability, and I think that's cool. I think that's what defense is all about." All three players make sense as potential Jacks considering the combination of mobility, spatial awareness and strength necessary for Jack duties. Jean-Baptiste straddled the line between outside linebacker and defensive end as a high school prospect in New Jersey. Sawyer, while always considered a more conventional edge rusher, was also athletically versatile enough to play quarterback for his Pickerington North High School team. Gaoteote was a top 15, five-star prospect who began his career at USC and transferred to Ohio State last season. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Palaie Gaoteote, a linebacker who transferred from USC earlier this summer, was on the practice fields outside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center when Ohio State opened its preseason training camp on Wednesday. But the Buckeyes are awaiting clearance before he can step onto the turf for a game when their season begins next month. Coach Ryan Day said they have not yet received a ruling from the NCAA surrounding his eligibility, and at least another week remains before a potential resolution. He's not on scholarship as a result.

Ohio State brought in Gaoteote to help provide additional depth at linebacker after all of last season's starters left and the position was hit hard by injuries in spring practice. He started 14 games over three seasons at USC, more experience than the Buckeyes' returning reserves. Gaoteote went through positions drills during a half-dozen practice periods that were open to reporters, but he is unlikely to see first or second-team reps in team periods until his status is sorted out. "It doesn't make sense," Day said, "because that's wasting reps if he's not available." Day avoided offering much of an early impression on Gaoteote's practice debut, saying it was "too early." - Columbus Dispatch

Palaei Gaoteote can participate in team activities for Ohio State, though coach Ryan Day said Friday that it may be a few weeks before his scholarship situation is settled. Day said the transfer linebacker from USC is "paying his own way right now" while Ohio State awaits a resolution from the NCAA regarding his eligibility. Transfers can now play immediately at their new school following an NCAA rules change during the summer. However, Day said the issue did not concern the transfer itself. The only difference right now is whether Gaoteote is on scholarship or considered a walk-on. Gaoteote has been listed in the university directory as a student majoring in Human Development and Family Science since mid-June. Gaoteote recorded 105 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and two sacks in three seasons at USC. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Ohio State apparently has added a former five-star linebacker from the University of Southern California as a transfer. Though Ohio State has not confirmed the addition of Palaie Gaoteote IV, he is listed in the OSU student directory as a human development and family science major. Gaoteote attended powerhouse Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, which produced current OSU defensive tackle Haskell Garrett. According to Gaoteote's USC bio, Garrett is his cousin. Gaoteote's addition would give Ohio State another option at linebacker. The Buckeyes' top four linebackers from 2020 - Tuf Borland, Baron Browning, Pete Werner and Justin Hilliard - graduated. - Columbus Dispatch

Tough coaching was supposed to put Palaie Gaoteote's career back on track, but after a few months under new USC defensive coordinator Todd Orlando, the promising former five-star linebacker is on his way out of L.A. Gaoteote has entered the NCAA transfer portal after three seasons at USC, presumably closing the book on an up-and-down tenure with the Trojans. The junior linebacker missed the previous two games while in concussion protocol, but had been billed for a major role in USC's revamped defense. His departure leaves the Trojans especially thin at inside linebacker, where their depth already was decimated by injuries this season. The shortened season seemed like an ideal opportunity for Gaoteote, who arrived at USC in 2018 as one of the nation's top linebacker prospects. Injuries slowed his progress over his first two seasons, which were otherwise marred by missed tackles and lapses in technique. - Los Angeles Times

Linebacker Palaie Gaoteote IV remains in concussion protocol, Helton said Tuesday. The junior suffered the injury in the second game of the season and missed USC's road win over Utah as a result. "He's had much improvement from Day 1 to where he is now, but you have to get rid of symptoms," Helton said. Sophomore linebacker Ralen Goforth is also still dealing with a foot sprain, though he was expected to start some basic change-of-direction work to test the injury Tuesday. - Orange County Register

Todd Orlando has been named Southern California's defensive coordinator. Clay Helton announced the hiring Friday of the veteran assistant who spent the last three seasons as Texas' defensive coordinator. Orlando was fired by the Longhorns on Dec. 1 after three seasons with coach Tom Herman, who brought Orlando with him to Austin from the University of Houston. Orlando was among the highest-paid assistant coaches in the nation during his tenure at Texas. Helton fired defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast on Dec. 28 after four seasons together. One day earlier, the Trojans allowed 49 points while losing the Holiday Bowl to Iowa and finishing 8-5. - AP College Football
