Troy head coach Chip Lindsey announced Thursday that Taylor Powell will be the Trojans' starting quarterback heading into the team's season opener against Southern next weekend. The announcement ends a QB battle between Powell and Gunnar Watson, which be gan in the spring. "Both guys competed extremely hard and both of them improved a great deal," Lindsey said. "Anytime you have competition like that, it makes everyone better. This year we're going into the season with the luxury of having two guys that have played college football and that's always a plus. At the end of the day, it's a competition and we have to go with one guy. We feel like Taylor is going to give us the best opportunity to win as a football team."Powell, a junior on the field, joined the Trojans in January after transferring into the program from Missouri. A former Mr. Football in the state of Arkansas, Powell started one game in his career - at Georgia - for the Tigers and saw action in 12 total contests. He sat out the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns and graduated from Missouri in three years. He led Fayetteville High School to a pair of Arkansas 7A state titles (2015, 2016) and threw for 3,473 yards and 44 touchdowns as a senior. He ranks fifth in Arkansas prep histo ry with 10,431 career passing yards and eighth with 113 touchdown passes. - Troy Messenger

Third-string quarterback Taylor Powell came off the bench Friday and led Missouri to three scoring drives and a come-from-behind 24-14 win over Arkansas, snapping the Tigers' five-game losing streak in both teams' season finale. Powell, who had started o ne game for Missouri earlier in the season for the injured Kelly Bryant, had been relegated behind Connor Bazelak on Friday. Bazelak, in his first career start, left in the second quarter and Powell, a graduate of Fayetteville High School, then led Misso uri (6-6, 3-5 SEC) on two go-ahead drives — one in the second quarter and another in the third — to beat his hometown team.Arkansas (2-10, 0-8), using its fifth starting quarterback of the season, had little luck offensively. Junior Jack Linds ey, who began the season as the fifth-stringer and only earned a scholarship in August, completed just 10 of 26 passes for 75 yards. Two of Lindsey's completions were for touchdowns, both times giving Arkansas the lead. Powell responded by leading a go-a head field goal drive in the second quarter and a go-ahead touchdown drive in the third. The Tigers' defense, which allowed just 242 yards of total offense, twice snuffed Arkansas drives in Missouri territory in the fourth quarter. Powell finished 8 of 1 4 for 105 yards with a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to former Arkansas wide receiver Jonathan Nance. - AP College Football
