Taylor Powell, Eastern Michigan, Player News

Taylor Powell threw for 298 yards and two touchdowns, Samson Evans rushed for a pair of scores and Eastern Michigan defeated San Jose State 41-27 in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Tuesday. Eastern Michigan (9-4) won a bowl game for the second time in program history. The team last won a bowl game in 1987, beating San Jose State in the California Bowl. San Jose State (7-5) turned the ball over three times. It was first time this season that the Spartans had multiple turnovers in a game. The Spartans built a 13-0 lead in the first quarter when Chevan Cordeiro rushed 27 yards for a TD and then found Justin Lockhart with an 8-yard scoring pass. Then, Eastern Michigan stormed back, taking control of the game by scoring 30 straight points.

After San Jose State's second touchdown, Sterling Miles blocked the extra point attempt and Tristen Hines scooped up the ball and raced 87 yards for a 2-point defensive PAT. That was the spark Eastern Michigan needed. The offense that had consecutive three-and-out possessions had touchdowns on its next four drives, all but putting the game out of reach. Evans scored from 1 yard out to draw Eastern Michigan within 13-9 by the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Powell found Darius Lassiter with a 1-yard scoring strike, Evans had a 3-yard TD run and Powell and Lassiter connected on a 28-yard scoring play. Jesus Gomez booted a 51-yard field goal and Jaylon Jackson scored on a 31-yard run to round out the scoring for the Eagles. Cordeiro threw TD passes to Nick Nash and Isaiah Hamilton in the second half for the Spartans. Cordeiro led the Spartans offensively, completing 26 of 44 passes for 366 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions. - Eastern Michigan/AP College Football

Taylor Powell threw three touchdown passes - two of them in a pivotal third quarter - and ran for a score as Eastern Michigan rolled to a 38-19 victory over Central Michigan on Friday. Eastern Michigan (8-4, 5-3 Mid-American Conference) posted eight wins for the first time since 1987. Chris Creighton became the first coach to post four seven-win seasons in EMU history. Creighton's Eagles have qualified for a bowl game in four straight seasons and five of the last six. EMU played in one bowl game before his arrival. EMU, which closed out the regular season with three straight wins, will share the MAC West Division title with Toledo after Western Michigan upset the Rockets 20-14 on Friday. Toledo handed the Eagles their last loss in late October, 27-24. Powell threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Tanner Knue to open the scoring. Samson Evans 15-yard scoring run gave the Eagles a 14-7 lead after one quarter. Evans set an Eagles record with the 27th rushing touchdown of his career.

Freshman Bert Emanuel Jr.'s second touchdown run - a 35-yarder - pulled Central Michigan (4-8, 3-5) within 14-13 at halftime. Powell connected with Andreas Paaske for a 9-yard score midway through the third quarter to up the Eagles lead to 21-13. Powell gave EMU a two-score lead with 21-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Drummond on the final play of the quarter. Powell scored on an 11-yard run in the fourth quarter. Powell completed 24 of 36 passes for 266 yards for Eastern Michigan. Evans rushed 23 times for 135 yards. Emanuel finished with 75 yards on 16 carries, scoring all three of the Chippewas' touchdowns. The Eagles beat Western Michigan and CMU this season to take outright possession of the Michigan MAC Trophy for the first time since 2012. EMU won its only MAC championship in 1987. - Eastern Michigan/AP College Football

EMU's Hassan Beydoun scored on a 13-yard strike from Powell to open the scoring with 5:16 left in the first quarter but Kent State (4-7, 3-4) answered about 2 minutes later when Collin Schlee threw a 39-yard TD pass to Ja'Shaun Poke.   First year Eastern Michigan University football player Taylor Powell (Fayetteville, Ark.-Fayetteville (Troy)) has earned one of the most coveted offseason invitations that a quarterback can hope for. The Fayetteville, Ark. native has accepted an invitation to the prestigious Manning Passing Academy, set to take place June 23-26, where he will serve as a camp counselor alongside some of the top collegiate signal callers in the nation.

Powell, in his first season with EMU, came to Ypsilanti after stints at Troy University and the University of Missouri. Last season at Troy, Powell played in six games, starting five, before suffering an injury. He completed 125-of-189 passes for 1,251 yards and seven touchdowns, and averaged 178.7 yards per game via the air. The veteran tossed for a season-high 311 yards and two touchdowns at ULM, Sept. 25, and was 35-for-49 against in that game. - Ann Arbor News

Troy head coach Chip Lindsey announced Thursday that Taylor Powell will be the Trojans' starting quarterback heading into the team's season opener against Southern next weekend. The announcement ends a QB battle between Powell and Gunnar Watson, which began in the spring. "Both guys competed extremely hard and both of them improved a great deal," Lindsey said. "Anytime you have competition like that, it makes everyone better. This year we're going into the season with the luxury of having two guys that have played college football and that's always a plus. At the end of the day, it's a competition and we have to go with one guy. We feel like Taylor is going to give us the best opportunity to win as a football team."

Powell, a junior on the field, joined the Trojans in January after transferring into the program from Missouri. A former Mr. Football in the state of Arkansas, Powell started one game in his career - at Georgia - for the Tigers and saw action in 12 total contests. He sat out the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns and graduated from Missouri in three years. He led Fayetteville High School to a pair of Arkansas 7A state titles (2015, 2016) and threw for 3,473 yards and 44 touchdowns as a senior. He ranks fifth in Arkansas prep history with 10,431 career passing yards and eighth with 113 touchdown passes. - Troy Messenger

Troy newcomer Taylor Powell is in a battle for the starting quarterback position with last year's starter Gunnar Watson. It's been a busy offseason for the Troy newcomer. Along with participating in the Manning Passing Academy, Powell has spent every possible moment either on the field or mentally preparing for the upcoming season by studying the playbook and watching film. "Just grinding with the guys, watching a lot of film," Powell said. "Early mornings, throwing and meeting with the guys. Just trying to get the offense on the same page. I feel like we are where we need to be heading into fall camp." Powell comes to Troy after playing parts of two seasons for the Missouri Tigers.

Powell saw action in six games in 2018 and 2019. He completed 35-of-75 passes for 431 yards. He had one start in his sophomore season in 2019. Powell arrived at Troy in time for spring practice. At the start of fall camp, Powell believes he is more comfortable with the offense. "In the spring everybody goes through their growing pains with a new offense," Powell said. "Now, I feel like we are really clicking. I'm super comfortable and I feel like I'm executing what coach is calling. I'm excited and very comfortable." - Troy Messenger

Third-string quarterback Taylor Powell came off the bench Friday and led Missouri to three scoring drives and a come-from-behind 24-14 win over Arkansas, snapping the Tigers' five-game losing streak in both teams' season finale. Powell, who had started one game for Missouri earlier in the season for the injured Kelly Bryant, had been relegated behind Connor Bazelak on Friday. Bazelak, in his first career start, left in the second quarter and Powell, a graduate of Fayetteville High School, then led Missouri (6-6, 3-5 SEC) on two go-ahead drives — one in the second quarter and another in the third — to beat his hometown team.

Arkansas (2-10, 0-8), using its fifth starting quarterback of the season, had little luck offensively. Junior Jack Lindsey, who began the season as the fifth-stringer and only earned a scholarship in August, completed just 10 of 26 passes for 75 yards. Two of Lindsey's completions were for touchdowns, both times giving Arkansas the lead. Powell responded by leading a go-ahead field goal drive in the second quarter and a go-ahead touchdown drive in the third. The Tigers' defense, which allowed just 242 yards of total offense, twice snuffed Arkansas drives in Missouri territory in the fourth quarter. Powell finished 8 of 14 for 105 yards with a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to former Arkansas wide receiver Jonathan Nance. - AP College Football
