2022 ALL-ACC FOOTBALL THIRD TEAM: WR - Keytaon Thompson, Virginia, 50 votes,...For the second-straight season, Thompson was UVA's top pass catcher. In eight games played, he had 53 receptions and 579 yards. Thompson's 6.6 receptions per game were the sec ond-most of any ACC receiver. A former quarterback who earned his undergrad degree from Mississippi State, Keytaon Thompson has gone all-in on becoming the best receiver he can be. New UVa coach Tony Elliott has made that easier. An ex-wideout himself, Elliott has been relentless in his critiques of the 6-foot-4, 217-pound New Orleans native. "The biggest area I've seen him grow is just accepting the challenge to become a technician at the position," Elliott said. "I already know you are a great football player. You have a great foo tball mind. He started as a quarterback. He just has that sense. He has that knack. Now can we add the technical aspect of it to complete your game? "He has everything he needs to be dominant and successful at this level, but I desire for him to accompli sh his goals beyond the University of Virginia, and I don't just want him to get to the NFL. I want him to stay in the NFL. He needs to just continue to improve the small technical aspects, because he has all the big things." Thompson admits he was a bit perplexed when every rep in practice was met with criticism.He led UVa receivers with 78 catches in 2021 while finishing just 10 yards shy of becoming the sixth player in school history to post a 1,000-yard receiving season. But the finer points - route-running, sinking the hips just before the break, blocking - all get called out when he doesn't do them. "At first, I was kind of confused, like, 'What does this guy want from me? Is he serious?'" Thompson said of Elliott. "But I eventually was ab le to catch onto it, change my perspective and really benefit." Thompson's rare size and catch radius create mismatches against every team UVa will play this fall. Keytaon Thompson's first season at UVa ended with a loss to Virginia Tech. To make matters worse, he also suffered a meaningful injury in the team's 33-15 loss to the Hokies. "I broke my ribs in that last game," Thompson said Wednesday at the ACC Kickoff . "That was really painful. I couldn't move. I couldn't work out for a nice amount of time after the game." Thompson shared that he returned to 100% health about a month ago. He's been able to work out while less than 100%, but he feels fully healthy now as the final remnants of pain fade away."I've been able to work out for a long, long time," Thompson said. "I've been working out and doing stuff. Still had a little pain. No surgery, so they have to heal naturally. It's just dealing with the pai n. It's pretty much subsided all the way." The second-year UVa player, who transferred to Virginia from Mississippi State, is expected to play an important role within Virginia's offense this fall. The Cavaliers plan to use Thompson at numerous offensive positions, including quarterback and wide receiver. He accounted for over 300 yards of total offense and six touchdowns last season. After the Mississippi State transfer suffered a shoulder injury last preseason, UVa moved him to a slash role that saw him play wide receiver, running back and quarterback. Thompson caught seven passes for 98 yards and three touchdowns. He ran the ball 3 9 times and threw it three. Saturday, Virginia showed it plans to get Thompson far more involved as a receiver. He ended up with more catches on the day than he had all of last season. "We really like his ability to catch the ball," said Mendenhall. "And he's long and he's got such a great catch radius. Virginia needed an offensive explosion Saturday to keep up with Sam Howell and North Carolina's high-powered attack. A depleted secondary left UVa in a tough position, but the Cavaliers won a shootout against Howell and the Tar Heels. Bronco Mendenhall's group fought extremely hard, gutting out a 44-41 victory to vanquish its four-game losing streak. It was a gritty performance from a team desperate for a victory. "It's just more fun," Mendenhall said of winning. "Let's just face it, it's just more fun. I like to see our players when they work so hard have fun, and I love to see them smile, and I love to see them carry themselves in a way that they're proud of the outcome. There have been so many really cool plays that I can celebrate with them in team meetings, but it's not the same when the world doesn't see them."Transfers made plays all over the field for Virginia in its upset over the Tar Heels. Offensively, Keytaon Thompson carried the ball 10 times for 43 yards and a touchdown. He also c onverted the critical fourth-and-short on a fake punt late in the contest to clinch UVa's win. "He's becoming one of the cultural examples that we can present when a player comes into our program," Mendenhall said. Thompson did a little bit of everything Saturday. He lined up at wide receiver, running back and quarterback and even on special teams. He motioned under center at times, creating a surprise quarterback sneak setup. UVa used him creatively, and Thompson is clearly embracing the role. "When yo u list the position, it'd be smart just to put football underneath," Mendenhall said. Until it was reported that Virginia had taken a spring commitment from a transfer quarterback, it had been a well-kept secret by UVa quarterbacks coach Jason Beck. Beck clearly was involved in the recruitment of Keytaon Thompson, a former Mississippi Sta te quarterback who was the 2016 Gatorade state player of the year in Louisiana. "We knew we needed another guy in the [quarterback] room for competition, for depth and for the stability of the program," said Beck, whose good fortune it was to have record -setting Bryce Perkins taking snaps for the past two seasons. The heir apparent, for now, is left-hander Brennan Armstrong, the back-up in 2019, who has three more seasons of eligibility.Thompson has attempted 105 passes in his college career, inc luding 66 as a freshman at Mississippi State in 2017. Armstrong has 25 career attempts and Stone has five. "He'll [Thompson] be a great fit and give us great competition between him and Brennan," Beck said. "We're pretty excited about Brennan. Lindell is a perfect option for us as well because he knows the offense. He doesn't have to take many reps. "He doesn't quite have the skills we want in that 'thorterback.'?" Virginia's starting quarterback competition just became significantly more interesting. While the Cavaliers still aren't practicing due to COVID-19, they added graduate transfer Keytaon Thompson from Mississippi State on Friday. Thompson will be immediat ely eligible for UVa with two years of eligibility remaining. He'll likely compete with returning quarterback Brennan Armstrong for the starting quarterback position. "Keytaon is big, physical, fast, dynamic. An exceptional athlete," Virginia football co ach Bronco Mendenhall said in a video posted by the program's official Twitter account."To win the Coastal Division and the ACC championship, two quarterbacks are always necessary, not just one. So in addition to Brennan Armstrong, who we already love, we get the chance to welcome Keytaon Thompson to our program. That just increases our chances to have the season we are all hoping for." At Mississippi State, the former four-star recruit played sparingly in recent seasons. Keytaon Thompson's time at Mississippi State is over. The redshirt junior quarterback officially put an end to his maroon and white saga via a Twitter post Friday afternoon. Thompson announced he is transferring to Virginia with two years of eligibility remaining. As a graduate transfer, Thompson is eligible immediately. "Thank you to the Hail State family for embracing me for the past 3 years," Thompson wrote in the tweet. "I will forever cherish my time in Starkville, MS. To my teammates and brothers at MSU, I'll never forget the memories we made on and off the field." Thompson will be remembered as the quarterback who took down Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson in the 2017 TaxSlayer Bowl. He threw for 127 yards and ran for 147 more and thre e touchdowns. Jackson threw four interceptions in Mississippi State's 31-27 victory. Thompson, a true freshman at the time, was playing in place of injured junior Nick Fitzgerald. Mississippi State's quarterback room is set to be a little less crowded. A source with immediate knowledge of the situation confirmed to The Dispatch Monday that redshirt junior Keytaon Thompson has entered the transfer portal as a graduate student. He w ill have two years of eligibility remaining. AL.com's Matt Zenitz was first to report the news. This marks the second time in less than a year that Thompson has entered the transfer portal. He previously did so after losing out on the starting job to Pen n State import Tommy Stevens in August but he decided to return to MSU and redshirted last season.Thompson had also been passed on the depth chart by rising-sophomore Garrett Shrader last season. While he could theoretically return to MSU, his pot ential departure comes with little surprise as the Bulldogs were slated to head into the fall with five scholarship quarterbacks and Vanderbilt transfer Allan Walters -- who is expected to be put on scholarship down the line. MSU also boasts two quarterb ack commitments in the 2021 class in four-star passer Sawyer Robertson and three-star recruit Daniel Greek. A former four-star prospect out of New Orleans, Thompson completed 50-of-105 career passes for 846 yards and eight touchdowns to just three interc eptions in 17 career games. - The Dispatch
