Devan Barrett, Incarnate Word, Player News

Devan Barrett hit the transfer portal earlier this summer, but the former Auburn running back/defensive back won't be going too far away for the remainder of his college career. Barrett on Friday morning announced he will be transferring to Troy to play defensive back. He should have two years of eligibility remaining, thanks to the NCAA's free year of eligibility due to the pandemic. At Troy, Barrett will reunite with Chip Lindsey, who served as Auburn's offensive coordinator during Barrett's first two seasons on the Plains and is currently the Trojans' head coach, as well as Troy assistant Al Pogue. Pogue spent last season on Auburn's staff coaching outside linebackers and Bucks and is now Troy's cornerbacks coach.

A former four-star running back, Barrett signed with Auburn in 2017 as the nation's No. 11 player at the position. He had 14 carries for 79 yards while also catching 10 passes for 33 yards and a touchdown as a true freshman, but the following spring he split time between running back and wide receiver, and by fall camp entering his sophomore season, he made the switch to the defensive side of the ball. - Birmingham News

It appears Auburn's running back room is about to lose a player. According to On3.com's Matt Zenitz, Auburn senior running back Devan Barrett has entered the transfer portal. Barrett's exit would leave the Tigers with four scholarship running backs just over two months before the season opener against Akron on Sept. 4. Auburn's backfield would now consist of sophomore Tank Bigsby, senior Shaun Shivers, redshirt freshman Jordon Ingram and true freshman Jarquez Hunter in the backfield. Hunter signed with Auburn as a three-star recruit in February, and Ingram joined the Tigers after the Mobile native started his career at Central Michigan.

Auburn head coach Bryan Harsin spoke highly of rising senior Shaun Shivers and the work ethic he brings to the running back room. Barrett stands as the eighth Auburn player to enter the transfer portal since the spring, joining defensive end Jaren Handy, defensive lineman Jay Hardy, safety Chris Thompson Jr., cornerback Kamal Hadden, cornerback Marco Domio, offensive tackle Prince Sammons and wide receiver Hal Presley. - Opelika-Auburn News

What's old is new again in Auburn's running backs room this spring. After an offseason shakeup that saw both D.J. Williams and Mark-Antony Richards transfer to Florida State and UCF, respectively, the Tigers' backfield has a new look to it, and the team is hoping to find some depth relief in the form of a former running back turned defensive back who is back to his natural position - senior Devan Barrett. "He's got the body type; I do like his attitude as a person and just who he is," Auburn coach Bryan Harsin said. "He can go play physical and play tough, and that position, that requires it. You've got to be a different guy to play tailback, and you've got to be someone who's physical."

Barrett is a former four-star prospect who originally signed with Auburn in 2017 as a running back, but it has been a while since the 6-foot, 195-pounder had seen actual reps at the position. After cracking the backfield rotation as a freshman in 2017, when he had 14 carries for 79 yards and 10 receptions for 33 yards and a touchdown, Barrett moved to cornerback the following fall (after splitting some time at receiver in the spring of 2018 as well). He worked mostly on special teams after his switch to cornerback, notably recovering a blocked punt for a touchdown against Alabama State in 2018, and then opted out during the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns. - Birmingham News

Barrett has already been one of the biggest winners of the offseason, and now he has an opportunity to really carve out a role for himself in the Tigers' backfield. The former four-star prospect began his Auburn career at running back but spent much of the last three seasons at defensive back while playing sparingly. He opted out late last season before deciding to return to the team this offseason, and he made the switch back to the offensive side to help bolster Auburn's dwindling depth at running back. Barrett is one of just three running backs on scholarship for Auburn this spring, along with Tank Bigsby and Shaun Shivers. He won't be supplanting Bigsby, the reigning SEC Freshman of the Year, atop the depth chart, but his versatility gives him a chance to vie for touches behind the Tigers' bell-cow back. - Birmingham News

Auburn is turning to a familiar face to provide needed depth to its running back room. Devan Barrett, who began his career as a running back before eventually moving to defense and ultimately opting out late last season, has returned to the team and will return to his old position, Auburn coach Bryan Harsin confirmed Wednesday. Barrett is the third Tigers player to rejoin the team after opting out at some point last fall. "He's a guy that is coming back into the program, a guy that, in high school, played running back," Harsin said. "He played running back here. He will be back, and he will be in that role." - Birmingham News

After participating in two games with Auburn in 2020, defensive back Devan Barrett opted out. "Devin, gosh I guess it was a couple of weeks ago, opted out," coach Gus Malzahn said. "So I'm not for sure if he's going to look at other schools or whatever." A four-star running back out of Florida, Barrett contributed as a true freshman in 2017 when he was a reserve tailback and a returner. He had 112 yards on 24 touches and scored a touchdown against Arkansas after catching a four-yard pass from Malik Willis. The following year, Barrett contributed as both a running back and defensive back, having moved to wide receiver and then cornerback by the end of fall camp. Barrett had very little experience on the defensive side of the ball because he was primarily an offensive player in high school, but he said he wanted to help the team. Barrett made three tackles that season while playing minimal minutes. As a special teams player, he ended up returning a blocked punt for a touchdown in the win over Alabama State. - Birmingham News
