The TD pass came o n a fake field goal attempt as Turk, the holder, flipped the ball to kicker Zach Schmit, who ran the ball in from two yards out to give OU a 10-3 second-quarter lead. The 60-yard punt was downed at the two-yard line, and OU's defense registered takeaways on both ensuing ISU possessions. Six Kansas State Wildcats made the 29-man preseason all-Big 12 football team. Five Baylor Bears joined them. And four West Virginia Mountaineers along with four Iowa State Cyclones. One Oklahoma Sooner was on the team. That's right. One. Punter Michael T urk. The OU masses are indignant and maybe they should be. Pushback over the Sooners' and Texas' eventual move to the Southeastern Conference? Maybe. Only three UT made the preseason team, and usually the squad is packed with Sooners and Longhorns. For a ll I know, the Sooners will be the pick to win the conference, when those same voters' opinions are revealed Thursday, and the league's best team ought to be represented by more than a punter. - Daily Oklahoman

When former Arizona State Sun Devils punter Michael Turk announced he was transferring from the program less than a month away from the season, it came as a shock to most. ASU head coach Herm Edwards joined Arizona Sports' Doug & Wolf on Monday to discus s the 2021 season and mentioned why the former Ray Guy Award semifinalist decided to leave the program for the Oklahoma Sooners. "It had nothing to do with anything but how we treated the COVID situation and what we were going to do going forward," Edwar ds said. "We had some things in there that he didn't agree with and that was fine. He didn't want to leave but he decided to go somewhere else."Replacing the boot of Turk won't be an easy task for ASU after he averaged 46.0 yards on 59 punts in 20 19, which ranked 11th in the FBS and led the Pac-12. Turk was a two-time First Team All-Pac-12 selection. However, Edwards thinks his team will have no problem replacing Turk at the position. "He'll be fine and we'll be fine," he said. "This kid (Eddie C zaplicki) we brought in is going to be a good player … he can punt and kick but for right now he's just punting." - ArizonaSports.com

Reeves Mundschau might still be OU's punter this season. But things got a lot more interesting at the position for the Sooners recently with the addition of Arizona State transfer Michael Turk. "It went from Forks Up to Horns Down," Turk said on a video last week announcing his transfer destination on his YouTube channel, which has more than 15,000 subscribers. The typical deadline for players to transfer and retain eligibility for the upcoming season is July 1, but as a graduate transfer, Turk figures to be eligible to play immediately. Turk seemed destined to be the Sun Devils' starting punter until earlier this month, making the decision to transfer after Arizona State introduced a policy that unvaccinated individuals - including players - couldn't be a part of the traveling party for road games. - Daily Oklahoman

Arizona State Sun Devils punter Michael Turk entered the transfer portal less than a month before the football team's season begins and in an Instagram post announced his commitment to the Oklahoma Sooners. Turk, who is a graduate transfer with a year of eligibility remaining, returned to the ASU program in June despite declaring for the NFL Draft, participating in the NFL Scouting Combine, signing with an agent and going undrafted. That's because Turk was granted a waiver from the NCAA, largely on the basis that COVID-19 affected his chances of being drafted due to his inability to be a part of pro days, team workouts and in-person interviews. The Sun Devils have two other punters listed on the roster: Florida State transfer Logan Tyler and freshman A dam Babb. Turk, who will now be a junior, averaged 46.0 yards per punt on 59 punts last season. That ranked 11th in the FBS and led the Pac-12. - Arizona Sports

The transfer portal has led to what most now call free agency in college athletics. Not getting enough paying time? Transfer. Don't like the coach? Transfer. Think the grass is greener somewhere else? Transfer. When a top line player opts to leave there are a lot of questions and in the case of Arizona State punter Michael Turk, the situation is complicated. Turk stunned all last week when he asked ASU compliance officials to enter him into the transfer portal. The timing made it an interesting move. Th e deadline for players to transfer and still be eligible to play the coming season at an FBS school was July 1, but since Turk is a grad transfer he actually could play this season. The move appears to be tied to an ASU policy that athletes - or an y individuals for that matter - who have not been vaccinated will not be part of the traveling party for any road game. Turk is a deeply religious individual, who has made his feelings on that issue public through social media, announced his decision to transfer on his YouTube channel. He has not given a reason for the transfer and did not respond to a text message left for him regarding that issue. That was not necessarily surprising because Turk, one of the premier punters in the country, has always p referred to keep a lower profile and has never particularly enjoyed dealing with the media. ASU athletic director Ray Anderson put out a statement after an inquiry from some media explaining the school's policy, which makes it sound like Turk's move was prompted by the policy. - Arizona Republic

The 2021 college football season hasn't even started yet and the Arizona State Sun Devils have been dealt a significant blow as senior punter Michael Turk has entered the transfer portal. It was a surprising move given that Turk was at practice on Thursd ay morning as the Sun Devils worked out for the second straight day in advance of the 2021 season opener against Southern Utah Sept. 2.Turk is a two-time first-team All-Pac 12 selection. He earned that honor last season despite only having 14 punt s for an average of 47.21 yards in the shortened, four-game season. Turk has been one of the nation's top punters since coming to Tempe in 2019. In his first season with the Sun Devils Turk was a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award which goes annually to the country's top punter. He led the Pac-12 and was 11th in the nation in punting (46.0 ypp). His kicks enabled ASU's punt coverage unit to finish 12th in the nation in net punting (41.6). - Arizona Republic

There is a first time for everything and it is the Arizona State football program getting benefit of what is believed to be a first for the NCAA. Punter Michael Turk declared for the NFL draft and signed with an agent but was ultimately not selected or s igned by any team as an undrafted free agent. The school applied for a special waiver in hope of getting Turk's eligibility restored. The school cited the coronavirus pandemic as special circumstances since ASU's Pro Day was canceled. The pandemic also prevented Turk, and others, from having private workouts for teams which is a usual occurrence in advance of the draft.Turk did attend the NFL combine in Indianapolis in February before the shutdown of sports. He opened eyes with his 25 reps bench -pressing 225 pounds going viral in social media circles since that was better than some linemen. But he had a lackluster showing in other areas which hurt his draft stock. An ASU spokesman said Wednesday that the school was notified that its request was approved and that Turk would be able to return. It is the first time he NCAA has granted that for a player who had declared, signed with an agent and gone through the process. - Arizona Republic
