Christian Young, Arizona, Player News

In its annual season-preview magazine, Athlon Sports ranked the Wildcats' defensive backfield as the third worst in the Pac-12. The members of the UA secondary don't see themselves that way. Nor should they. Start with the fact that Arizona ranked second in the conference in passing yards allowed last season. Then recall spring practice, when the secondary produced a bevy of interceptions under new defensive coordinator Johnny Nansen.Fisch sees NFL-caliber talent throughout that unit, which inclu des Young, fellow safety Jaxen Turner and cornerbacks Christian Roland-Wallace and Treydan Stukes. Young and Roland-Wallace made the initial watch list for the 2023 East-West Shrine Bowl. Young casually referred to the UA defensive backfield as "the best secondary in the Pac-12" during spring ball. That's probably a stretch. Opponents had a 25-4 touchdown-to-interception ratio against Arizona last year. But the Wildcats might be closer to first in the league than 10th. - Arizona Star News

Like many others on his team and around the country, Christian Young opted out of the 2020 football season. The veteran Arizona defender had injured his ankle during training camp. He appeared in the season opener, but the ankle wasn't getting any better . So Young went home to Houston to focus on his schoolwork and rehab his injury. "I watched the rest of the games with my Pops," Young said Saturday after the Wildcats' first full scrimmage of spring. "It was hard not being on the sideline. I was cheerin g my team from the couch." The time away made Young appreciate "just how much I missed football. It's just an itch. I love football...It made me realize I need to be here."Young knew Arizona would be changing coaches after an 0-5 season capped by a 70-7 loss to rival Arizona State. He resolved to give the new staff a chance. Thus far, it has turned out to be a perfect pairing. Don Brown's defense features a position called the "Viper" that's essentially a cross between a safety and a linebacker. It's ideally suited to Young's skill set. "We just really liked his athleticism," said Keith Dudzinski, who coaches the Vipers and "Sam" linebackers. "The thing we didn't know is how physical he would be up at the line of scrimmage. He's shown he's defin itely physical. He's covered tight ends. He's made a lot of plays in spring. So I'm real happy with what he's done so far." - Arizona Star News

Arizona's defensive secondary depth continues to take hits in 2020, after junior safety Christian Young opted out of the season on Wednesday, due to an ankle injury. In his third year with the program, the 6-foot-2-inch, 206-pound Houston native played i n Arizona's season-opening loss to USC, but didn't record any statistics. Sophomore safety Jaxen Turner started in his place during Arizona's first two contests against USC and Washington. Young became the third Wildcat to opt out of the season, but stil l remain on the roster, joining running back Bam Smith and defensive end JB Brown. Smith and Brown opted out before the season for COVID-19 concerns. Young was also the third UA defensive back to step away from the program on Wednesday. Freshmen cornerba cks Edric Whitley and Khary Crump are no longer with the Wildcats. Whitley tweeted his decision to enter the transfer portal, while Crump's withdrawal is unknown. - Arizona Star News
