James Blackman threw two touchdown passes and ran for two scores to power Arkansas State to a 58-3 victory over FCS-member Grambling in a season opener on Saturday. Blackman threw for 155 yards on 12-of-16 passing with two TDs in the first half. He also scored on a 9-yard run to lead the Red Wolves to a 30-0 lead. Blackman's scoring throws went to Champ Flemings for 29 yards and Seydou Traore for 13. Blackman opened the scoring in the second half with a 2-yard TD run. Johnnie Lang, AJ Mayer and Mike Sharpe II added scoring runs. Blackman took a seat after completing 3 of 4 passes in the third quarter. He finished with 210 yards. Lang rushed for 124 yards on 13 carries and Flemings finished with seven catches for 122 yards. Garrett Urban kicked a 30-yard field goal in the third quarter for Grambling. - Arkansas State/AP College Football

Quarterback James Blackman started 24 games at Florida State over four seasons and is tied for 10th in Seminoles history with 43 touchdown passes. That's not the kind of resume you usually find with Sun Belt quarterbacks. Blackman took over as the FSU starter as a true freshman in 2017 after Deondre Francois was lost for the season in the opener. He threw for 186 yards per game with 19 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Then Florida State started to fall apart.

Jimbo Fisher quit at the end of 2017 to take the Texas A&M job. Willie Taggart went 9-12 and was fired at the end of his second year. And then Mike Norvell went 3-6 in his first season and Blackman's last in Tallahassee. Blackman never had a chance to get settled after getting thrown in freshman year, and then he was in a quarterback battle at Arkansas State last year, making five starts. Now in his sixth college season, he's finally locked in as the starter as a 6-foot-5, 190-pound veteran who's been through a lot. That's a ton of experience for a former top-400 national recruit. He might bring a little something to this game. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

James Blackman and Jaxon Dailey exist on drastically different planes. The former is entering his sixth year of college football at his second school, once again looking to stake his claim to a starting spot. The latter is an early enrollee who could just have easily spent this weekend at his senior prom instead of Arkansas State's spring game. On a day that provided few highlights, most of the attention was on the two guys in white -- quarterbacks wore white jerseys rather black or red as the rest of teammates did -- as the Red Wolves wrapped up the last of their 15 spring practices with a full-length intrasquad scrimmage at Centennial Bank Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Blackman's Black squad, comprised of the first-team offense and second-team defense, grabbed a 30-28 win in overtime, and ASU Coach Butch Jones praised the 6-5 redshirt senior not only for his play but also for his leadership in completing a game-tying drive, adding the necessary two-point conversion and then converting another in the overtime period. "He's very calm, he's been very collected and he's on a mission," Jones said of Blackman. "We've spoken about being a CEO quarterback ... an individual who owns the team, owns the offense and has high demands. He's the leader." Blackman completed 26 of 39 passes for 312 yards and 3 touchdowns, including a 40-yarder to Jeff Foreman with less than two minutes remaining. It was the first time Blackman had played in front of fans since early October 2021 when he suffered a shoulder injury against Coastal Carolina. - Northwest Arkansas Times

The quarterback change to Jordan Travis not only appears to have helped FSU's rushing game but also its passing attack. James Blackman opened the season as the starting quarterback. But after two lackluster performances, the Seminoles made the change to true freshman Tate Rodemaker before their game against Jacksonville State. However, when FSU's offense continued to struggle, Norvell turned to Travis. He stepped in and helped the team rally to defeat JSU 41-24. FSU offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham says he has seen a ton of improvement in the team, especially since Travis took over at quarterback. "Anyone who wants to see the improvement, go put on Georgia Tech, and go put on the last three games," Dillingham said. "Just go watch it. And I would highly recommend that because it shows the progress. I said it last week -- we are getting better, not to be confused with good, and I meant that. - Times Union

The redshirt junior quarterback impressed coaches during preseason camp, earning his second season-opening start. Early on against Georgia Tech, it appeared he was going to reward coaches for picking him. Blackman led the Seminoles on scoring drives of 51 and 62 yards as the team jumped out to an early 10-0 lead. But after the first 15 minutes, FSU's struggled to move the ball. Blackman started the game 7-of-9 passing for 76 yards, Blackman completed just 44% of his passes (16 of 36) for 122 yards and an interception. "Throughout the course of the game there were a handful of opportunities that James was seeing the right things but...something forced him to hesitate a few times and missed an opportunity," Norvell said of his quarterback. "He has to work through and get his eyes in the right place, but all in all, it was across the board. I don't the consistency showed up at any position. "We had quite a few mistakes that showed up in critical situations." - Orlando Sentinel

Mike Norvell is Florida State's new coach, taking over a Seminoles program that has struggled while he was helping to build Memphis into a Group of Five power. Florida State made it official Sunday with an announcement and a news conference was scheduled for noon in Tallahassee, Florida. Norvell will replace Willie Taggart, fired Nov. 3 by Florida State after going 9-12 as head coach. The Seminoles, who won the 2013 national title, finished the season becoming bowl eligible at 6-6 under interim coach Odell Haggins.

Norvell will leave Memphis having posted the highest winning percentage in Tigers’ history. He built on the foundation left by Justin Fuente when he left the Tigers for Virginia Tech and he led the Tigers to the first 12-win season in school history. Named Memphis' head Dec. 4, 2015, Norvell won at least eight games in each of his four years here and reached double digits twice, including this year. Memphis wrapped up its program-record 12th victory at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium on Saturday in the American Athletic Conference championship win over Cincinnati. Fans stood and cheered as the confetti flew, including one Memphis fan who kept repeating to himself that he hoped Norvell would announce he was staying. - AP College Football

James Blackman threw three touchdown passes and Khalan Laborn had two TD runs as Florida State defeated FCS Alabama State 49-12 on Saturday. The Seminoles (6-5) are bowl-eligible under interim head coach Odell Haggins for the second time in three years. Haggins is 4-0 as an interim coach, first filling in at the end of the 2017 season after Jimbo Fisher left for Texas A&M and now after the dismissal of Willie Taggart on Nov. 3.

Blackman tossed a 69-yard touchdown pass to Tamorrion Terry and a 39-yard touchdown pass to Tre'Shaun Harrison as the Seminoles racked up 550 yards on offense. Laborn had had 12 carries for 55 yards, filling in for injured tailback Cam Akers (hand). Hamsah Nasirildeen also had an 80-yard interception return for a touchdown. KHA'Darris Davis threw for 262 yards, including a 34-yard TD pass to Jahod Booker for the Hornets (5-5). - AP College Football

D.J. Matthews caught a short pass, faked out three defenders on his way to the sideline and then dove for the end zone, taking off from the 6-yard line before clipping the pylon to give Florida State the go-ahead score. "It kind of reminded me of high school, doing the long jump," Matthews said after helping the Seminoles beat Boston College 38-31 on Saturday in their first game since coach Willie Taggart was fired. "I just wanted it. I want to score for my team," Matthews said. "I want to make plays for my team, so we can just be better." Matthews turned a short slant pattern into a 60-yard touchdown to break a fourth-quarter tie, and Jordan Travis followed with a 66-yard run for what turned out to be the winning score for Florida State (5-5, 4-4 Atlantic Coast Conference).

James Blackman threw for 346 yards and two TDs, hitting Tamorrion Terry seven times for 156 yards and one score. Six days after firing Taggart, Florida State moved to the verge of a bowl berth and preserved two-time interim coach Odell Haggins' perfect record. "Guys came out and played for Coach Odell. They love him," Matthews said. "When things happened last Sunday, that's what he did -- he brought us together." Florida State fell behind 14-3 in the first half before scoring 21 straight points, only to watch BC (5-5, 3-4) tie it 24-all in the final minutes on Dennis Grosel's half-yard roll-out and dive for the end zone. The Seminoles took over at their own 41 with 2:27 left, lost a yard and then Blackman found Matthews across the middle, about 5 yards away. - Florida State/AP College Football

James Blackman was the front-runner all along and now the quarterback has won Florida State's starting job. Coach Willie Taggart made the announcement on Sunday night in a statement posted on the school's website. Blackman beat out Wisconsin graduate transfer Alex Hornibrook and Louisville transfer Jordan Travis. The redshirt sophomore will start for the Seminoles when they open the season against Boise State on Saturday in Jacksonville. It's not clear if Hornibrook or Travis will be FSU's backup. Taggart's next opportunity to meet with the media is on Monday.

Blackman has started 13 games, including 12 as a true freshman in 2017. He has thrown for 2,740 yards, 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions at FSU. In his only 2018 start, Blackman threw for 421 yards, four touchdowns and an interception in a road loss to NC State. Blackman became the immediate odds-on favorite this winter when Taggart dismissed Deondre Francois, who started 11 games last fall. - AP College Football

James Blackman is in the driver's seat in the quarterback competition at Florida State. As the Seminoles' opened preseason practice on Friday, Blackman is the unquestioned leader. He was taking the first-team reps and guiding the Seminoles with a smile and business-like approach of a starting QB. But Florida State's quarterback competition is a wide-open race, with no timetable to end.

"Hearing the word compete, it challenges me," Blackman said. And there are many challenges for Blackman to embrace. He was Florida State's starter in 2017, but Blackman acknowledges he's in an open competition with Wisconsin transfer Alex Hornibrook and others. Hornibrook completed 60 percent of his passes and led the Badgers to a 26-6 mark as their starter. - AP College Football/Washington Post
