Former Oregon linebacker Isaac Slade-Matautia, who entered the transfer portal last month, announced Tuesday he is reuniting with Jim Leavitt at SMU. As a starter on the Ducks' back-to-back Pac-12 championship teams, Slade-Matautia had 62 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and 11 pass breakups in 2019 (14 games) and 45 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and five pass breakups in 2020 (seven games). Two five-star recruits from the 2020 class, Noah Sewell and Justin Flowe, are the favorites to win the starting inside linebacker spots for new Oregon defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter. Leavitt, Oregon's defensive coordinator under Willie Taggart (2017) and Cristobal (2018), is entering his first season as SMU's defensive coordinator under former California coach Sonny Dykes. He helped recruit Slade-Matautia, a four-star prospect in the 2017 class, from Honolulu to Eugene. - Register Guard

Oregon linebacker Isaac Slade-Matautia announced Friday that he has entered the NCAA transfer portal with the intention of playing his final collegiate season somewhere else. Slade-Matautia, the Ducks leading tackler last season and a starter the past two years, was a productive leader on the program's back-to-back Pac-12 championship teams. "These are milestones and memories I will cherish forever," Slade-Matautia posted on social media. "Nothing will ever replace those experiences, relationships, and memories I've had here." Oregon's recent success on the recruiting trail means Slade-Matautia will likely be replaced in the heart of new defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter's unit by a five-star recruit. Slade-Matautia had 3.5 tackles for loss and a sack last season. The fifth-year junior had 127 tackles, 12.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in 28 career games for the Ducks. - Register Guard

2020 BUTKUS AWARD PRESEASON WATCH LIST: Isaac Slade-Matautia, Oregon,...Slade-Matautia started all 14 games at middle linebacker a season ago in Oregon's run to Pac-12 and Rose Bowl titles. He was one of just two linebackers nationally and the first in the Pac-12 since 2015 with 60 tackles and double-digit pass breakups. Slade-Matautia registered 64 tackles, including 6.5 for loss, and led the Ducks in pass breakups (11). - Oregon Football

For all the attention Troy Dye deservedly drew and received last season, an equally important factor on the second level of Oregon's defense was Isaac Slade-Matautia. Dye made the most tackles (84) for Oregon for a fourth straight year, but Slade-Matautia had 62 along with 11 pass breakups, which tied for the most in the country by a linebacker. Slade-Matautia had 20 tackles in seven games before a broken collarbone derailed his 2018 season. He took over for Kaulana Apelu, replaced his production and made the defensive calls on the field.

In 2020, Slade-Matautia's role and production will need to grow in Dye's absence. Having an experienced player like Sampson Niu filling the role at weak-side linebacker helps relieve some stress compared to a freshman stepping in, but this is Slade-Matautia's linebacking unit now and in 2021 and how he leads will impact how Oregon's loaded group of younger linebackers develop as well. As important as defensive coordinator Andy Avalos and inside linebackers coach Ken Wilson are to grooming the defense, how players interact amongst themselves will be more important amid this peculiar season. - The Oregonian
