OrTre Smith, North Carolina Central, Player News

OrTre Smith is ready for his true sophomore year at South Carolina. If he had to wait three years to get here, that's just the hand he was dealt. "I feel great. Knee is great," said Smith, who was an Army All-American coming out of Wando High School in 2017. "My knee situation, that's over with now. I feel completely fine. The little year and a half, that was just something I had to go through. I'm past that." That was Smith catching a pass between a corner and a linebacker at practice the other day, then turning upfield, no knee brace in sight. His body looked slimmer, his speed strong.

Some of the newcomers at practice asked who that was. Smith's name was pointed to, along with his "redshirt senior" designation. Yes, that's correct. Smith has been at USC for five years, and he's just now completely ready to play his true second season. The first time he tried a balky knee sent him down a path he is happy to revisit, but only to illustrate how far he's come. "When I got my knee injury my sophomore year, I wasn't thinking a long-term thing. It was, 'OK, I'm hurt, I've been hurt before, I'll be fine next year," Smith said. "My junior year, that's when everything kind of hit me. I couldn't play like I used to play. I never thought about quitting at all. But it weighed on me." - The Post and Courier

What if he could get back to the form he had as a freshman, when he started 10 games, caught 30 passes and scored three touchdowns? What if he and his 6-4, 227-pound frame could supply the Gamecocks with a sorely needed receiver, since they're really starting over at quarterback and their most dependable returning pass-catcher is a tight end? "I feel like OrTre stepped to the plate as we know he could," said cornerback Cam Smith, who often draws the assignment of covering Smith in practice. "He's making great strides to be the No. 1 receiver here." OrTre Smith has certainly looked good thus far, no extra wraps or braces on his knee and a hulking presence in the receiver group. A strong work ethic and unshakeable belief in himself wouldn't let him leave this opportunity on the table. "I've been having flashes in my head of what I can really do if I'm 100 percent healthy. I know what I can do. You guys haven't seen it," Smith declared. "I had a little flash my freshman year. Me personally, I know I could be the best to ever do it if I stay healthy and get in shape." There's that phrase again. "If I stay healthy." The knee limited him to two games in 2018 and while he played in nine games the next year, he wasn't the same. Then he was gone for 2020, meaning Smith hasn't actually played since Nov. 30, 2019. - The Post and Courier

Will Muschamp mentioned it last week. Redshirt junior OrTre Smith, a Mount Pleasant native and Wando High alum, wasn't having problems with the balky knee that's affected his last two seasons but "had a little bit of an issue." The issue was concerns about coronavirus. Muschamp announced on his call-in show on Thursday that Smith will opt out of the season. It's been a checkered path for Smith, who burst onto the scene in 2017 with 30 catches and three touchdowns while starting 10 of 13 games. He only got into two games in 2018 before a chronically dislocating kneecap (a genetic condition) ended his season.

He was limited in 2019 while recovering and caught nine passes with a touchdown in nine games. Expected to have the chance to really step forward in a receiver room with only one known producer - senior Shi Smith - OrTre Smith will instead take a season away. His scholarship will remain intact and because the NCAA is allowing every player to have 2020 as a year that doesn't use eligibility, Smith can still have two seasons of football if he wants to use them. - The Post and Courier
