From the moment he announced he'd be returning for his senior season, Alex Forsyth has been Oregon's starting center. A back injury knocked him out for five games last season, but Forsyth is a sure-fire starter. He's the leader of the group on and off th e field and one of the longest tenured players in the program. Ryan Walk has been the No. 2 center in all practicality for the past two years, but should he remain a starting guard then Jackson Powers-Johnson could be the backup on paper.Forsyth s et the tone for Oregon's offensive line when he announced he'd be back in 2022 all the way back at Pac-12 Media Day. "I always thought I was coming back," he said. "So I didn't think it was a question." With Forsyth and Walk the first to decide, then Ste ven Jones, the momentum built to get T.J. Bass on board and for Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu to reverse his decision to remain in the NFL Draft and come back as well. That illustrates the influence Forsyth has on the group and that there are finite other plac es or circumstances where he could play. He's been at center since 2020 and there's only extreme contingencies that could alter that. - The Oregonian

Alex Forsyth enters his second season as Oregon's center with high expectations and he's planning on being around a while. The fifth-year junior, who was named first team preseason all-Pac-12 and is on the watch lists for the Rimington and Outland trophi es, intends to return to Oregon for his sixth season of college football in 2022. "I already told (offensive line) coach (Alex) Mirabal I plan to come back for a sixth year just because I haven't played a whole lot," Forsyth said. "I just started seven g ames so far and whatever happens this year. I love college football and it's my dream to play here so I'm going to focus on right now playing for them." He is planning on earning his Master's degree in brand responsibility, a one-year program at UO that several athletes, including Sabrina Ionescu and Haley Cruse, have earned degrees in over the last few years. - The Oregonian

Forsyth took over as the starter in the spring of 2020 and hasn't looked back. He makes the protection calls up front for a group that allowed 11 sacks over seven games, which ranked 29th nationally. Considering Oregon's entire line was new starters, tha t's an impressive debut albeit in a shortened season. However, there is room for improvement for the group. The Ducks didn't face three of the top five teams in the Pac-12 in sacks last season and their run protection is an area of emphasis this offseaso n. "We always say five men, one mind," Forsyth said. "You got to be on the same page. Whether I'm making the call the tackle has got to know why is he making that call versus what front. Everybody's got to know the holistic picture of everything if we wa nt to be five minds as one. I think that's a big thing we're trying to emphasize this spring, five guys got to play as one. That's when we're most powerful."Forsyth is a critical piece for Oregon to improve in those areas in 2021 and also in aidin g Jonathan Denis and Jackson Powers-Johnson while they serve with the second and third-teams. Mario Cristobal's take..."Alex Forsyth, of course as a leader because he's a guy that's started for us. Dawson Jaramillo has done a really good job...The young guys still continuing to shine; Jonathan Denis, I got to single him out because he's jumped in there, him and Marcus Harper, at multiple positions and they are playing hard for playing time." - The Oregonian

Entering his fourth season, Alex Forsyth is naturally one of Oregon's most veteran offensive linemen. He's also one of its most experienced. But those are relative terms for the Ducks this year as they replace the most experienced offensive line in the c ountry, featuring Outland Trophy winner Penei Sewell, NFL Draft picks Shane Lemieux and Jake Hanson, undrafted free agents Calvin Throckmorton and Brady Aiello and starter Dallas Warmack. Forsyth is the vocal leader of the new starting five, significantl y important since he's taking over at center, a position he's never played in a game. Yet only redshirt-senior Sam Poutasi has been at Oregon longer than Forsyth and only redshirt-sophomore Steven Jones has played more snaps, that's that's only 170 compa red to 91."I think Alex would've started at probably every other school in the country last year," said Ryan Walk, his roommate and fellow offensive linemen. "He was ready to play and if we needed to call on him last year he was going to be absolu tely ready to go. I think that's a testament to him as a person and as a player. "He prepares as hard or harder than every single person on this team every single week. Whether he was with the ones, twos or threes he was going into every single game like he needed to start and play 75 snaps. He's carried that over to this year where he's a guy now, he's a leader and he's stepped into that role really well. I think that's really important for our offensive line to have a guy like that." - The Oregonian
