D.J. Matthews Jr., Indiana, Player News

D.J. Matthews is one of the smallest players on Indiana's roster, but no one left a bigger void than the Florida State transfer when he suffered a season-ending knee injury at Western Kentucky in week four last season. Indiana brought in Matthews to fill the opening left by Whop Philyor as the next playmaker in the open field, and the 5-foot-11 and 160-pound Jacksonville, Fla. product was highly productive in a number of ways. Matthews caught 13 passes for 165 yards, returned four punts for 83 yards wit h a career-long, 81-yard touchdown against Idaho, and he rushed twice for 28 yards with a score.Indiana's offense was never a juggernaut in 2021, but in the first four weeks with the shifty Matthews on the field IU scored 119 points. They would on ly produce 88 points over the final eight contests without him. When Matthews went down in a heap on the turf at Western Kentucky as he recovered a muffed punt, in many ways the IU offense crumbled right along with him. That realization once again hit IU coach Tom Allen and his assistants this week as the Hoosiers opened fall camp in Bloomington. "After the first practice, the general consensus of the staff was 'wow, boy did we sure miss D.J. last year," Allen said on Friday via Zoom. "It really, really hurt us last year losing him. He didn't get to play very many games, so you kind of forget really how good he was." - Thedailyhoosier.com

Florida State transfer wide receiver D.J. Matthews gives IU a proven playmaker on special teams. Matthews returned 37 punts for 457 yards in three seasons at FSU, including a 74-yard punt return for a TD against Miami. Indiana special teams coach Kasey T eegardin said Matthews will compete with Reese Taylor, who returned nine punts for 73 last season to earn honorable mention All-Big Ten special teams honors."He's confident overall," Teegardin said. "He looks comfortable back there fielding the ba ll. We did a better job last year (than) two years ago, when the ball was kicked and rolling around. I think Reese did a better job. We call it hidden yardage, is where the ball bounces and how much yardage we can actually lose from giving our offense th at starting field position. "We want to field every single punt we possibly can. He is confident enough in himself and his abilities to go do that. I think Reese was obviously an all-conference punt returner as well, so there will be a little bit of a ba ttle there, but I think the depth overall is better than what we've had." - Herald Bulletin

Florida State transfer receiver D.J. Matthews Jr. was named one of the two most outstanding offensive players this spring, while Ole Miss transfer defensive end Ryder Anderson was named one of the two most outstanding defensive players. Both should figur e prominently into IU's plans in the 2021 season. The 5-foot-10, 153-pound Matthews came to IU as an established receiving and return threat in three seasons in the ACC with the Seminoles. "He had a really good spring," Allen said. "It was from Day 1, I think he might have got offensive player of the day the first practice he had, just his quickness, very, very good route runner, not a very big guy but extremely quick, also good speed, really good ball skills, had a great attitude, just a really likeabl e person." Matthews will likely line up as a slot receiver and return punts in the fall. "Just gives us another weapon in that throwing game, which we really need and just has a chance to replace what Whop (Philyor) gave us at that position," Allen said. - Herald Bulletin

Norvell confirmed senior receiver D.J. Matthews has entered the transfer portal with intent to leave the program. "Sometimes when you go through transitions, there are some things that fit better than others and D.J.'s making a decision for his future an d we fully support him in that decision," Norvell said of the move, which was first reported by AL.com and 247Sports.com. Matthews, who started 15 games, has been absent from the team after he spoke out on social media about Florida State's handling of C OVID-19 safety protocol. Norvell told reporters last week he hadn't been in touch with the senior in several weeks. Matthews ranked second on the FSU roster in receiving last season with 36 catches for 355 yards and three touchdowns. He also was the Semi noles' primary punt returner with 19 returns for 125 yards. - Orlando Sentinel
