  One day after he was tabbed to the Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference first team, Georgia State running back Destin Coates was named a candidate for the 2021 Doak Walker Award, announced Wednesday by the PwC SMU Athletics Forum. The Doak Walker Award is presented annually to the nation's top running back. Coates, the senior from Tallahassee, Fla., is the first Georgia State running back to be recognized as a candidate.

Coates is the third-leading rusher in GSU history with 1,452 career rushing yards, and he ranks second with 15 rushing touchdowns and tied for second with six 100-yard games. He was a third-team All-Sun Belt selection in 2020 after finishing third in the league with 85.4 yards per game. Coates rushed for 769 yards in nine games, the second-highest season total in program history and scored seven touchdowns last fall. - Georgia State

  Destin Coates and Cornelius McCoy each scored two early touchdowns as Georgia State set a school record for first-half points and held off Louisiana-Monroe 52-34 on Saturday. Georgia State (3-3, 2-3 Sun Belt) scored a record 42 points before halftime, 21 coming off of three Louisiana-Monroe turnovers, as the Panthers rebounded from a 51-0 Halloween thrashing at then-No. 20 Coastal Carolina. Coates, the Sun Belt Conference's leading rusher, finished with his fourth 100-yard game, 102 yards on 20 carries. He is tied for second on the Georgia State list for most rushing touchdowns with 13. The 52 points tied the tied the program record for points against an FBS team.

Perry Carter scored three touchdowns for the Warhawks (0-8, 0-4), one rushing and two by air. Jeremy Hunt was 26-of-39 passing for a season-high 339 yards and three touchdowns in relief of sophomore starter Colby Suits. Suits, the Sun Belt leader in passing yards, left the game after going 0 for 3 with a fumble and an interception. The Warhawks' losing streak has reached nine games, after ending the 2019 season with a one-point loss to cross-state rival Louisiana-Lafayette. - AP College Football

  Junior running back Destin Coates is the Sun Belt's leading rusher, averaging 108.5 yards per game (No. 13 in FBS). He has topped the 100-yard mark in three straight games. As a team, the Panthers are No. 20 in FBS in rushing (205.0 ypg). Coates, who topped the 1,000-yard mark for his career vs. Troy, now ranks sixth in GSU history with 1,117 rushing yards and tied for fourth with 11 rushing touchdowns. - Georgia State Football

  Destin Coates ran for two late touchdowns, all Georgia State running backs scored at least once and the Panthers pounded out a 52-38 victory over Arkansas State, gaining 340 yards on the ground Saturday. Georgia State (3-2, 1-1 Sun Belt Conference) jumped to a 21-0 lead on TD runs by Tra Barnett, Coates and Seth Paige. The Panthers racked up 722 yards of offense. Arkansas State (3-3, 1-1) dug out of the hole and closed to within three points, 38-35, after Layne Hatcher connected with Omar Bayless, who made a one-handed grab in the end zone while tangled with Quavian White in the fourth-quarter.

Georgia State scored touchdowns on its next two possessions to put the game out of reach. Coates, who had three TDs in the game, had both late scores, on runs of 1 and 2 yards. Dan Ellington competed 29 of 41 passes for 382 yards for the Panthers. He threw for one TD and ran for another. Barnett rushed for 139 yards on 14 carries. Sam Pinckney hauled in nine passes for 120 yards and a TD, while Cornelius McCoy added eight receptions for 107 yards. Hatcher passed for 299 yards and two touchdowns but was also picked off twice for the Red Wolves. - Georgia State/AP College Football
