Just his name alone makes him interesting. There aren't many Bumper Pools in the world. The senior linebacker for the Arkansas Razorbacks has one of the best names in college football, no doubt. He and Alabama freshman defensive back Kool-Aid McKinstry a re two easy picks for the All-SEC name team. Throughout the summer, The Tuscaloosa News is taking a look at an interesting player or person around each Alabama football opponent: not necessarily the best, the worst or the most important person. Instead, the focus for this series is on who's interesting.Pool earns that label solely based on his name. No elevator pitch needed. The mention of his name leads to immediate curiosity. Believe it or not, it's his legal first name, per Bob Holt of the Ark ansas Democrat-Gazette. It wasn't Pool's given name at birth, though. That was James Morris Pool. But his dad starting calling him Bumper almost right away. "I didn't even know how to spell my full name when I was going through preschool," Pool told Holt . "A teacher asked me to spell my name one day, and I wrote Bumper because that's what my name was to me." Once the linebacker turned 16, he made the switch permanent. His full name is now Bumper James Morris Pool. He's got more going for him than a cool name. Pool put together a strong junior season in 2020 for the Razorbacks as he tallied 101 total tackles. His 11.2 tackles per game ranked second in the SEC. - Montgomery Advertiser

Senior linebacker Bumper Pool said he's feeling stronger after playing through a rib injury he suffered early last year in the Hogs' 21-14 upset at No. 16 Mississippi State in the second game. "Last season I broke my ribs Week Two and I felt like my stre ngth just never finally came back," Pool said. "And so this next season I was like, 'I'm not going to let that be an issue. I want to have that size and strength." Pool got with strength and conditioning coach Jamil Walker and put together a plan. "Coach Walker and I sat down and talked about wanting to work on that, and that comes with working on speed and getting underneath that squat bar." Pool said he's at 232 pounds, which he feels is a good weight. "I'm hoping to stay there through camp," he said. "Add a few pounds, a couple here or there, but hopefully stay at that weight." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Day 1 of preseason practice went swimmingly for Arkansas linebacker Bumper Pool. The senior contributed to what he said was a productive day for the Razorbacks' defense. In all, the group came away with six interceptions, he said, two of which belonged t o him. "I was excited about it," Pool said. "Just something I wanted to work on was my pass coverage. I think that comes with working on your technique and knowing the coverages better." Pool credited linebackers coach Michael Scherer and defensive coord inator Barry Odom for his improvement in that area. Pool was also adamant about working on his body following last season. You wouldn't know it given he finished with 101 tackles, but he played with broken ribs for a majority of Arkansas' 10-game schedul e.Pool did not feel 100% after Week 2 - when he broke up 2 passes and recorded 20 tackles at Mississippi State, helping the Razorbacks snap their 20-game SEC losing streak - and his strength never fully returned. Still, he finished with 14 tackles in back-to-back games against Texas A&M and Tennessee. He had 11 or more tackles in two of the final three games of the season. By season's end he was one of three Arkansas defenders named to All-SEC teams by the league's coaches. This summer, he set ou t to be even better and more reliable at the second level alongside Grant Morgan. His goal was to ensure that strength won't be an issue in 2021. "I want to have that size and strength," he said. "[Strength coach Jamil Walker] and I kind of sat down and talked about that. I wanted to work on that, and that comes with working on speed and the squat bar." - Northwest Arkansas Times

The victory came at a coast. Arkansas showed up without Dorian Gerald and Julius Coates, its starting defensive ends, and lost key players Rakeem Boyd, Treylon Burks, Montaric Brown, Grant Morgan and Bumper Pool during the game. Boyd, Burks and Brown wer e unable to return, and Morgan, who had 15 tackles, and Pool, who notched a game-high 20, missed playing time. Arkansas defensive coordinator Barry Odom, with tape of LSU's futile man coverage against Mississippi State last week serving as incentive, whi pped up a plan that frustrated the Bulldogs and made a blueprint for the SEC to copy. Arkansas rushed three and dropped eight almost exclusively, playing a zone that left Costello checking down for short passes much of the time and throwing into coverage . The Razorbacks also rotated defensively on the front and back end without stop."We were so prepared," Pool said. "Everybody going into it knew that we were going to do what we did tonight. We had such a great plan. Coach Odom did an unbelievable job. "We knew what they are going to do before every play it just felt. When you have that kind of confidence going in, it's unbelievable. "Coach [Sam] Carter, I mean those guys were preaching to us. It's so big for us to get this win. We were here two years ago and we got beat really bad, and Mr. [Hunter] Yurachek said it would never happen again. And for it to happen here tonight it was just awesome." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Beat LSU in Death Valley one week with a record-setting performance. Lose to Arkansas, a team that had dropped 20 straight SEC games, the next week at home. Mississippi State got the full Mike Leach experience in two games with its new head coach. Turnov ers and failure to convert in the red zone doomed the Bulldogs on Saturday. Arkansas, unlike LSU, played mostly zone coverage against the Air Raid, "limiting: K.J. Costello to 313 yards passing after he went for almost double that against the Tigers. Kud os to Arkansas defensive coordinator Barry Odom, who has a history with Leach and the Air Raid. Odom was defensive coordinator at Missouri when the Tigers were in the Big 12 and went 3-0 against Leach. Bumper Pool set a career-high with 20 tackles, which is tied for the 10th most in a single game in school history. Jerry Franklin was the last Hog to have 20 in a game (Nov. 20, 2010 vs. Mississippi State). Pool is the sixth Razorback to have 20 or more total tackles in a game since 2000. - Arkansas/AP Co llege Football
