San Diego State needed a spark on offense and Lucas Johnson delivered. Johnson threw TD passes to Jesse Matthews in both overtime periods for his only completions of the game as No. 24 San Diego State finally got going offensively after a rough regulatio n and beat San Jose State 19-13 Friday night. Johnson relieved an ineffective and banged-up Jordon Brookshire in the fourth quarter and came through in overtime after a few shaky moments in regulation. "We just thought we were a little stagnant and we ne eded to do something different," coach Brady Hoke said. Neither team scored a touchdown in regulation before Johnson delivered a 14-yard pass on the opening possession of overtime for the Aztecs (6-0, 2-0 Mountain West).Tyler Nevens answered with a 1-yard run for the Spartans (3-4, 1-2). But Trenton Thompson intercepted Nick Nash to start the second overtime to set the stage for Johnson and Matthews. "We’ve never been in a game like that before," Thompson said. "It was a crazy one for us." That set the stage for Johnson and Matthews to end it with a 24-yard pass on third down against man coverage to help San Diego State improve to 6-0 for the second time in 46 years. "I love that matchup all day," Johnson said. "He went up and made a spectacul ar play two times. I give a lot of props to him." The game was an offensive slog with the teams combining for 14 punts, four field goals, one fumble, one missed field goal and a turnover on downs without scoring a touchdown in regulation. - San Diego Sta te/AP College Football

By the time San Diego State dialed up a successful Philly Special on its final 2-point conversion attempt, it wasn't even the craziest part of the Aztecs' triple-overtime thriller with Utah. And after one last video review went their way, the Aztecs coul d celebrate another win over a Pac-12 foe. Quarterback Lucas Johnson caught a 2-point conversion pass from Jesse Matthews in triple overtime, and San Diego State blew a 14-point lead in the final minutes of regulation before hanging on for a 33-31 victor y over the Utes on Saturday night. "It was exciting," Aztecs coach Brady Hoke said. "I'm not going to deny that." Johnson scored easily on a picture-perfect Philly Special after both teams' kickers missed field goal attempts in double overtime.Mom ents later, the Aztecs (3-0) collectively ran across the field in a frenzy when officials reversed their call of a 2-point conversion catch by Utah's Connor O'Toole, ruling the ball hit the turf. "I still can't believe it," Aztecs defensive lineman Camer on Thomas said. "When it was official, I was so excited. I don't even know what was going through my mind. I'm excited to keep this season rolling." Greg Bell rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns and Jordan Byrd returned a kickoff 100 yards for a TD, but the Aztecs passed for only 44 yards and nearly gave away their second straight victory over a Pac-12 opponent after beating Arizona last week. - San Diego State/AP College Football

San Diego State's search for a starting quarterback was the biggest story line coming into spring practice. So what did 15 workouts over five weeks do to decide the matter? Pretty much nothing. The QB search will once again be the primary focus when the Aztecs reconvene for fall camp in August, perhaps extending until game week for the 2021 season opener against New Mexico State. SDSU's post-spring depth chart lists the No.1 quarterback as Lucas Johnson OR Jordon Brookshire OR Jalen Mayden. SDSU head co ach Brady Hoke and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Jeff Hecklinski regularly note progress among the quarterbacks as the spring progressed, although none of the QBs was particularly impressive during SDSU's Spring Game.Johnson (5-for-14, 88 yards) threw the game's only touchdown pass, a 72-yard completion to Ethan Dedeaux. That means Johnson amassed only 16 yards through the air during the other eight series in which he was involved. Brookshire (4-for-11, 55 yards) and Mayden (5-for-12, 83 yards) had similar struggles. This isn't going to get it done in an era when several quarterbacks now are completing better than 70 percent of their passes (nine FBS quarterbacks in 2020) and dozens (31) are better than 65 percent. - San Diego Union T ribune

Georgia Tech quarterback Lucas Johnson has been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA. Johnson can play three more college seasons after the decision announced Thursday. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound quarterback was granted the additional year after seeing action in just one of his first three seasons. He was redshirted in 2016 and missed all of last season with a foot injury. Johnson appeared in nine games as a reserve quarterback and holder in 2017. He appears likely to be the starter when Georgia Tech opens the season Aug. 29 at defending national champion Clemson. The NCAA's decision was similar to the one in late July that gave linebacker David Curry a sixth year. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining. - AP College Football
