Asher O'Hara crashed through a defender at the goal line to score on a 14-yard keeper, lifting Middle Tennessee to a 40-34 walkoff win in double overtime against Rice on Saturday. The Blue Raiders (2-5, 2-3 Conference USA) needed last-gasp heroics twice in the final moments in order to get past Rice, which was finally playing its season opener after coronavirus issues caused seven previously scheduled games to be cancelled or postponed. Rice seemed on the brink of victory when Mike Collins, who went 18- 35-242 passing with four touchdowns, led the Owls on an 83-yard drive to grab a 34-31 lead with 34 seconds left in regulation.Collins hooked up with Austin Trammell for a 48-yard gainer when the drive appeared stalled, found Tammell for the 20-yar d score and then the two-point conversion. Middle Tennessee was not out. Crews Holt kicked a 48-yard field goal as time expired in regulation to knot the game at 34. The Blue Raiders went first in OT but Holt missed a 50-yarder. Rice once again seemed on the verge of a win but Collin Riccitelli's 40-yard FG try was partially blocked by Jalen Jackson and bounced three times off the goalposts before falling back onto the field. Three plays later O'Hara rolled left for the game-winner. - Middle Tennessee/A P College Football

Asher O'Hara had his worst game at MTSU against Army, going 9-of-14 for 46 yards and two interceptions. Chase Cunningham was inserted into the game in the second half. A similar situation happened last season against North Texas when O'Hara was strugglin g. Cunningham nearly led the Blue Raiders back from a double-digit deficit. Cunningham finished 7-of-10 for 63 yards against Army with the offense flowing better under him. Should O'Hara struggle against Troy, Stockstill has shown that he's not afraid to give Cunningham a shot. - Daily News Journal

If Middle Tennessee's offense wants to take a step forward in 2020, having a more balanced rushing attack could be the key. The Blue Raiders' team rushing numbers were solid in 2019, but mostly due to quarterback Asher O'Hara. He had a team-high 1,058 ya rds and nine touchdowns to become just the second QB in school history to reach 1,000 rushing yards in a season, and he finished third among QBs nationally in rushing yards. After O'Hara, MT's next leading rusher was Terelle West, who ended his Blue Raid ers career with 290 yards and four touchdowns. Part of the issue Middle Tennessee's backs faced in 2019 was the injury bug. Jayy McDonald was the only player in the group who appeared in all 12 games. - Middle Tennessee Football
