Tremond Shorts, LSU, Player News
|
Five days into preseason camp, LSU continued to tinker Monday morning with the offensive line as it tries to find at least four new starters. Near the beginning of a 30-minute viewing period, LSU used a combination of left tackle Will Campbell, left guar d Tre'Mond Shorts, center Garrett Dellinger, right guard Miles Frazier and right tackle Anthony Bradford. This was different from the first day of practice, when LSU started out with redshirt junior Charles Turner at center, redshirt junior Kardell Thoma s at right guard and senior Cameron Wire at right tackle during a drill with the full offense.Campbell and Shorts were the only players to appear on the first-team offensive line during two brief open sessions. LSU's other three practices have bee n closed. "It's in flux," offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock said. "We're still in the identification phase of, 'Who are the best five guys actually going to be?" LSU expected the process to take a couple weeks. Offensive line coach Brad Davis cross-tra ins players at multiple positions to create more options, and he needs time to properly evaluate everyone with so many openings, especially after multiple potential starters missed spring practice. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Well before spring practice started, offensive line coach Brad Davis said LSU was "starting from ground zero" on the line of scrimmage. The team had lost four starters from an offensive line that struggled at times last season, and he needed to find a ne w group. Some answers emerged this spring while other questions lingered until fall practice. As we preview the season ahead, here are five things to know about where the offensive line stands now. Davis noticed signs of complacency when he arrived last summer. He doesn't want to see them again. So even though LSU consistently used the same offensive line near the end of spring practice, competition will stretch into preseason camp, especially as newcomers enter the mix and injured players return to the field. For the sake of a baseline - this could change - LSU started Will Campbell at left tackle, Tre'Mond Shorts at left guard, Charles Turner at center, Miles Frazier at right guard and Cameron Wire at right tackle in the spring game. LSU added Shorts and Frazier to supplement the offensive line, which lacked experience after the departure of four starters. Shorts stood out on film for his effort, and he started 40 straight games at ETSU. With one year of eligibility, he'll have a good chance t o take one of the guard spots. - Baton Rouge Advocate
