Coastal Carolina will begin the 2021 season as a top 25 team. The coaches poll is voted on by 65 Football Bowl Subdivision coaches through the American Football Coaches Association, including Coastal's Jamey Chadwell. The Chants finished the 2020 season ranked 14th in both the Associated Press Top 25 Poll and coaches poll, and 12th in the final College Football Playoff Ranking. CCU went 11-1 with an overtime loss to Liberty in the Cure Bowl after not posting a winning record in three previous seasons at the FBS level, and knocked off fellow top-25 programs BYU and Louisiana-Lafayette during the 2020 season.

Coastal returns 19 of 22 starters on offense and defense this season, as well as most of its primary special teams players. The Chants are joined in the top 25 by No. 23 Louisiana, giving the Sun Belt Conference two teams in the preseason ranking. Coastal is a co-favorite to win the conference's East Division with Appalachian State in the preseason Sun Belt coaches poll, while Louisiana is the favorite to win the West Division and conference overall. - Myrtle Beach Online

Football coaches in the Sun Belt Conference have seen the error of their ways. After Coastal Carolina went undefeated in the conference last season despite being picked to finish last by the league's coaches, the Chanticleers are the coaches' co-favorite to win the East Division in 2021. The Chants and Appalachian State each received 44 points in the preseason coaches' poll released Tuesday. Both teams are still behind Louisiana in the poll, however. They each received five points fewer than the West Division favorite. Behind CCU and App. State in the poll in the East Division are Georgia State (24), Georgia Southern (20) and Troy (18). Coastal plays App. State at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, N.C., on Wednesday, Oct. 20 in what might be the Chants' most important game of the season. Both CCU and Louisiana were ranked in the top 15 of the final AP Top 25 poll last season and won't play this season unless they meet in the conference championship game. They were scheduled to play in the title game last season but it was canceled due to coronavirus cases within the CCU program. CCU went 11-1 last season and Louisiana 10-1 with its only loss to CCU on a field goal in the final seconds. - Myrtle Beach Online

Tight end Isaiah Likely is considered an NFL prospect after an impressive junior year that included an average of more than 20 yards per catch despite playing most of the season with a foot injury that required postseason surgery, but he told The Sun News earlier this year he was returning and reiterated that on social media. - Myrtle Beach Online

2020 ALL-SUN BELT CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM: Isaiah Likely, Coastal Carolina, TE,...Perhaps the most explosive tight end in the nation, Likely totaled 25 catches for 517 yards and four touchdowns this season for the Chants. His 517 receiving yards were 11th in the Sun Belt overall but first among all Sun Belt tight ends, while his average yards per catch of 20.7 yards per reception was third in the Sun Belt. Despite missing one game and playing with a lower-body injury that will require surgery at the end of the season, Likely caught at least one pass in nine of the 10 games in which he played and recorded a career-high 118 receiving yards in the win over Appalachian State. He had catches of 75, 72, and 57 yards on the season, all three of which were the longest pass plays on the season for CCU's offense. - Coastal Carolina Football

The junior has emerged as perhaps CCU's most dangerous playmaker to help the Chants (9-0) reach No. 18 in the College Football Playoff ranking, and he is expected to have an opportunity to prove himself in the NFL when he chooses to leave school. "He's a special, special player. We think he's a next level player," CCU head coach Jamey Chadwell said. "He's 6-4, 250 and he runs really well. He's very gifted from a standpoint of being able to run and being very physical and strong, just a natural strength. He's got great hands. "The way the NFL is and the way they use tight ends I do think he has a good shot of having a chance to continue his playing career beyond college. He has that type of skill set."

Likely has 17 receptions for 423 yards and four TDs in eight games this season - which are all second or third on the team - for an average of 24.9 yards per catch, which is in the top five in the country. His production has come despite missing a game and otherwise playing through an undisclosed lower body injury that will require surgery after the season, according to Likely and Chadwell. "He's got a lot of toughness," Chadwell said. "He was banged up and we're trying to work him back in slowly and the last couple weeks he's gotten accustomed to his injury and playing through the pain, and he's had two really big games the last couple weeks and he's a huge part of our offense. He makes us very dynamic." - Myrtle Beach Online

Junior tight end Isaiah Likely was a big part of the CCU offense early in the season, but he has been hampered by a lower body injury of late that forced him to miss the Louisiana game on Oct. 17 and has affected his production. He also just hasn't been targeted much in recent games. In the three games prior to Saturday, Likely had three catches for 17 yards. But he was a focus Saturday. The big and fast 6-foot-4, 245-pounder was targeted on CCU's first offensive play despite having two Mountaineers in coverage and was hit by Grayson McCall for a 75-yard TD. He finished with three catches for 118 yards and had a drop that would have been a big gain.

"Whether I'm getting involved or not I love seeing my team celebrate, seeing my team in the end zone, blowing teams out and staying undefeated," Likely said. "So it happened today where we knew what they were going to do with the linebackers and safety, giving me the ball and letting me go do what they recruited, it was a just a fantastic opportunity." Likely now has 13 receptions for 350 yards and four TDs this season for an average of nearly 27 yards per catch. - Myrtle Beach Online

He finished the season ranked among the league leaders in tight ends with 32 receptions, 431 receiving yards, and a team-high five touchdowns. - Coastal Carolina Football

There is still a lot of uncertainty surrounding the return of athletics at Coastal Carolina University, including how teams will handle coronavirus testing and in what manner games will be played. But two things are clear. There will be athletic department spending cuts in multiple forms, and the Chanticleers will try to play their 2020 football schedule in full. CCU athletics and on-campus classes have been suspended since early March because of COVID-19, and the university has suffered financially because of the pandemic, which will be reflected in athletics. The Chants are scheduled to begin their football season on Sept. 5 at South Carolina. "In our situation, our plan is to play our 12 games," CCU director of athletics Matt Hogue said Tuesday. "So far I think the plan for the Sun Belt [Conference] is everyone seems to be uniform in the goal to move forward with the season as scheduled, and right now it remains on schedule, as do the other fall sports we compete in." Hogue said no scheduled football opponents have contacted him requesting a change. "This is an every day evolving situation as everyone knows so certainly you could have a significant change that affects all of that," he said. - Myrtle Beach Online
