Oregon opened fall camp with its top offensive lineman limited. T.J. Bass, a first team all-Pac-12 selection by the league's coaches last season, was one of the only limited players for the Ducks during their first practice of fall camp Friday afternoon at the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex. There was no apparent or obvious injury to Bass. After stretching, freshman receiver Justius Lowe went to the side to work with a trainer and rode an exercise bike. Oregon coach Dan Lanning said the issues for Bass and Lowe were not significant. Otherwise, there weren't any apparent absences for UO. - The Oregonian

One of the bigger changes to Oregon's starting lineup last season, T.J. Bass asserted himself at left guard despite a limited offseason and was a consistent performer in his first year as an FBS starter. Bass had the unenviable task of replacing Shane Lemieux, who was drafted higher than any of the graduating UO offensive linemen from 2019. Yet the junior college transfer was able to earn Pac-12 offensive lineman of the week in just his second game. Now Bass is one of six returning regular contributors up front and even without playing in the spring game it's evident that he'll remain a starter in the fall. Mario Cristobal's take..."T.J. Bass is a very physically dominant player. I think his name gets lost out there, he doesn't get much of the credit but he's really becoming something special." - The Oregonian

If there's a single adjective offensive linemen want most associated with their name it's "tough." It goes with the territory of playing in the trenches. Pass blocking and paving the road in the run game are not for the faint of heart. They're inglorious tasks, moving other 300-pound men against their desired path so that your team can reach its destination. T.J. Bass is good at those things; it's why the 6-foot-5, 318-pound Washington native was a junior college All-American and was ranked the top JUCO guard prospect in the country last year. It's also why his new position used the same term four times in 51 words to describe what Bass brings to Oregon's offensive line.

"He's tough," offensive line coach Alex Mirabal said. "He's tough. (From) up in the Washington area, up there in Deming. He's tough. He's strong. He's a good athlete. If you had a basketball team made out of football players you want to pick him. He's got really good athleticism. He's got really good feet. He's physical. He's tough." Bass enrolled at Oregon in January and immediately began working with the second-team offense during spring practice. It didn't take long into fall camp for Bass to showcase his skills further and put himself in position to be the Ducks' starting left guard. "T.J. Bass is going to be an outstanding football player," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal declared during fall camp. "He is powerful. He's massive. He's smart, tough, diligent, all those things. Have been extremely impressed with him." - The Oregonian

Oregon coach Mario Cristobal says he's been impressed with the Ducks' new players. Oregon's 2020 recruiting class will start having an impact on the field right away. Mario Cristobal said five-star prospects Justin Flowe (linebacker), Noah Sewell (linebacker) and Dontae Manning (cornerback) have a chance to live up to their billing like defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux did last season, albeit without the benefit of a full spring practice and offseason due to the pandemic. With so many key players from last year's Pac-12 championship team graduating or opting out, the Ducks will also lean on transfers to help reload.

"If you're going to try to bring a guy that's a grad transfer or a junior college player into your program, you're doing it because they already are physically mature and you certainly want to target guys that are mentally mature," Cristobal said Wednesday after Oregon's fifth fall camp practice. "(Players) that, from a cultural standpoint, they understand that they are joining a new family. They have to adapt, they have to come full throttle to make it work." T.J. Bass, who transferred from Butte College, reminds the coaching staff of a more versatile Shane Lemieux. The 6-foot-5, 318-pound junior has been competing at both tackle positions and was the top-ranked junior college guard prospect. Cristobal said Bass could also play center, if needed. "T.J.
