LSU fifth-year senior defensive end Ali Gaye will not play in the Citrus Bowl against Purdue, coach Brian Kelly announced during his radio show Wednesday night. Gaye finished the season with 36 tackles, six tackles for loss and 2 1/2 sacks. He forced two fumbles and deflected two passes. Kelly also confirmed junior defensive tackle Jaquelin Roy will not play in the game Jan. 2 in Orlando, Florida. Roy announced he was declaring for the 2023 NFL Draft on Tuesday. He finished this season with 49 tackles, 3 1/2 tackles for loss and an assisted sack. Without Gaye, Roy and junior edge rusher BJ Ojulari, who also declared for the draft, LSU is left with sophomore Mekhi Wingo as the only starting defensive lineman playing in the bowl game. - Baton Rouge Advoc ate

With August coming to a close, Gaye is eager and ready to carry the momentum over to September and beyond as one of the leaders of the school's revamped football program. The 6-foot-6, 265-pound pass rusher is one of the keys to a defensive line that inc ludes ends BJ Ojulari and Maason Smith and nose tackle Jaquelin Roy - a group that's received much attention in preseason camp as the team's strength on that side of the ball.A combination of length, power and speed made Gaye the No. 2 junior coll ege defensive end in 2019, displaying the same types of traits LSU's coaches have seen over and over this month - and hope to see even more of when the season begins. "No. 1 is his length, and he's a good speed and power rusher," first-year defensive coo rdinator Matt House said of Gaye, a second-day NFL draft pick in early projections. "He uses that elite length, along with speed, and generates so much power. "The force he generates on tackles is just different. From a mentality standpoint, the guy love s to be taught - and that's big." - Baton Rouge Advocate

For the first time since 2000, LSU was not ranked in the USA Today sports AFCA football preseason coaches poll. The poll, which uses a panel of 65 head coaches from Football Bowl Subdivision schools, had Alabama ranked No. 1 in the country. The Crimson T ide were followed by Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson and Notre Dame. LSU received votes for the poll, but after going 11-12 over the last two years, the Tigers missed the top 25 ahead of their first season under head coach Brian Kelly. The last time LSU did n't appear on the preseason coaches poll was former head coach Nick Saban's first year. LSU finished 8-4, a quick turnaround after going 3-8 and firing head coach Gerry DiNardo the year before. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Texas A&M (3) and Arkansas (1) also received votes to win the division. LSU, which has an 11-12 record over the past two years, finished last in the SEC West in 2021. Junior defensive end Ali Gaye will return to LSU next season, he announced Thursday on social media. Gaye wrote on Twitter he will see "tiger nation" in 2021. Gaye's decision bolsters LSU's defensive front. In his first season after transferring from a j unior college, Gaye led LSU with 9.5 tackles for loss and five quarterback hurries. He also recorded two sacks and six pass breakups, using his long arms to disrupt throws, while intercepting one pass in the season finale against Ole Miss. With Gaye, who coach Ed Orgeron once called a potential early-round draft pick, LSU gets back one of its starting defensive ends, along with freshman BJ Ojulari. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Seven different defenders have collected LSU's eight sacks this season, a four-sack-per-game average that's tied eighth nationally. Defensive ends Andre Anthony, Travez Moore and nose tackle Siaki "Apu" Ika each picked up their first against Vanderbilt, and edge rushers Ali Gaye and BJ Ojulari harassed Seals for most of the night. Gaye provoked plenty of first-half pressure, often beating his blocker on the way to rushing Seals into throws. Ojulari's hit on Seals forced his fourth-quarter interception o n the goal line. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Inside his apartment last Saturday night, Ali Gaye ate Polynesian food with his roommates and their families. Defensive lineman Soni Fonua's mom brought enough to feed about 40 people, so the players feasted after a season-opening loss to Mississippi Sta te. Gaye, a junior defensive end, felt confident that night LSU would fix its mistakes. He had played well in his first start, using the natural length that pushed him up the depth chart in preseason practice. Gaye brushed off his success. "That's just o ne game," Gaye told his high school football coach, John Gradwohl, who attended the dinner. "There's lots of room for improvement."Gaye deflected attention from himself, but he stood out in the midst of a disappointing loss. His final stat line - three tackles, one sack, a tackle for loss and three deflected passes - signaled a breakout performance. Emerging as a force on LSU's defense realized one of Gaye's dreams. He started playing football after his family moved from The Gambia, a small count ry on the Western coast of Africa, when he was 12. He attended two junior colleges because one of them dropped its football program, and he has lived in four states, moving to pursue his football career. If Gaye develops, coach Ed Orgeron believes he can become an early pick in the NFL draft because of his size. Gaye, who's 6-foot-6, can declare for the draft next spring. "Hopefully he stays for two years," Orgeron said, smiling. "Don't get too good." - Baton Rouge Advocate

Two positions stood out in LSU's first official depth chart. The Tigers provided some clarity on the open cornerback spots, and they listed junior college transfer Ali Gaye as a starter at left defensive end. Senior Travez Moore entered preseason practic e as a starter at defensive end, but Gaye overtook him. He'll start opposite senior Andre Anthony against Mississippi State. "He's earned that starting position," coach Ed Orgeron said. "I think he's going to have a great season for us." Most of the dept h chart resembled what Orgeron said throughout preseason practice, but the coach called Moore a starter the last time he discussed defensive ends.Gaye, a 6-foot-6 and 262-pound junior, transferred from Garden City Community College. In his only se ason there, Gaye registered 44 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble as he became the No. 2 rated junior college defensive end in the country. "Thank God we got Ali from junior college," Orgeron recently said. Orgeron likes Gaye's range and physicality . Early in LSU's final scrimmage last Friday, Gaye batted a pass into the air, creating an interception. He'll split time with Moore - Orgeron said they'll have equal reps - but Gaye will start the game. - Baton Rouge Advocate
