2022 ALL-SUN BELT CONFERENCE FOOTBALL THIRD TEAM: DB - Darrell Luter Jr., South Alabama (Sr., DB - Hattiesburg, Miss.),...Luter, a 2023 Senior Bowl invitee, finished the year with 37 tackles with teams throwing away from him as the boundary corner for So uth Alabama. He finished with 25 solo tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss. He also recorded five pass breakups and an interception (Louisiana) and was one of the best corners in the nation after being named to five watch lists at the beginning of the season . Luter recorded three or more tackles six times during the season including five against each Troy and Southern Miss and was credited with four stops against Louisiana Tech and Arkansas State. - South Alabama Football

South Alabama returns only one cornerback who saw extensive playing time last season, but Darrell Luter makes for a good starting point. Luter, a senior from Hattiesburg, Miss., was a first-team All-Sun Belt Conference pick last season, when he totaled f our interceptions and 10 pass breakups in just 10 games played. He's also a preseason all-conference pick this year, and has been getting All-America and NFL draft buzz heading into his final season with the Jaguars. "One thing about him is, he's very co nsistent and very conscientious," cornerbacks coach Dwike Wilson said. "He pays attention to detail. And when you do those three things, you can do anything you want to do. He just stayed locked in and doesn't believe the hype. He's in that (playbook) no w just as much as he was last year, trying to get better." Luter's rise in terms of national profile the last three years has been nothing short of meteoric.A no-star recruit at Oak Grove High School, Luter went to Pearl River (Miss.) Community Co llege for two seasons, only one of which he was a starter. Former South Alabama coach Steve Campbell and his staff signed Luter, but he didn't start his first year with the Jaguars either. But since head coach Kane Wommack took over in December 2020, Lut er has been a mainstay of the team's "Swarm D." "It's just been a blessing to me," Luter said. "It's a story I can tell the young kids, just believe and trust in the process. It wasn't so easy coming out of high school, it wasn't so easy going to JuCo. I t wasn't easy when I started at South, but as long as you believe and trust in the process, God is going to take you where you want to go." - Birmingham News
