Not able to participate in drills this week at the NFL combine because of January knee surgery, former Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams believes he would have the fastest 40-yard dash time among prospects in the upcoming NFL draft. "I just know nobody could run with me," Williams said Wednesday. "I don't know no 40 time. I just know nobody could run with me. Just say whatever the fastest 40 time here is -- I'm faster." Williams said he did not have his 40-yard dash time at Alabama recorded during his lone season in Tuscaloosa. When the NFL last held its combine in 2020, former Alabama receiver Henry Ruggs ran that year's fastest 40-yard dash in 4.27 seconds. The record since the combine began electronic timing in 1999 was a 4.22-second dash by Washington's John Ross in 2017. Williams and his former Alabama teammate John Metchie will only take part in team interviews and medical evaluations this week in Indianapolis as they both recover from torn ACLs. - Birmingham News

Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams believes his team would not have lost January's national championship game if he had not injured his knee early in the second quarter. "I felt like we would've won the game," Williams said Wednesday at the NFL combine in Indianapolis. "Just -- things happen, you know." Williams had four catches for 65 yards, most coming on a 40-yard gain early in the second quarter when he tore the ACL in his left knee. Alabama and Georgia were tied, 3-3, when Williams was injured and the Tide finished that drive with a field goal to go ahead, 6-3. "I watched the play a lot of times," Williams said. "I don't know what the factor was. I don't know what caused the injury. I don't know what it was. I just know I turned around and tried to stick and, yeah."

Asked why he has re-watched the play so much, Williams responded, "Shit, I was trying to see what happened. I just couldn't believe it happened to me. It was something I never thought could happen to me." The injury happened when Williams tried to plant his left cleat in the artificial turf at Lucas Oil Stadium, just steps away from where Williams spoke to reporters Wednesday at the Indiana Convention Center. "It had a little memory but it wasn't pretty much anything," Williams said of returning to the scene of his injury and Alabama's loss. "I just looked at it, like, yeah, it could've been different. It is what it is. - Birmingham News

Alabama will head into the postseason the same way it started the regular season: No. 1 in the nation. The Crimson Tide reclaimed the top spot in The Associated Press college football poll on Sunday after beating previously top-ranked Georgia. Defending national champion Alabama, which was No. 1 for the first six weeks of this season in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank, jumped three spots after dominating Saturday's Southeastern Conference title game. Alabama received 50 of 62 first-place votes from the media panel. The Bulldogs fell to No. 3.

In between, Michigan was No. 2 for a second straight week after winning the Big Ten Conference championship for the first time since 2004. The Wolverines received 9 first-place votes. Cincinnati slipped a spot to No. 4, though it is only four points behind Georgia and received three first-place votes. The Bearcats are the only remaining unbeaten FBS team in the country. The College Football Playoff field was to be set later Sunday, with those same teams expected to hold the top four spots. - AP College Football

Nick Saban and his Alabama Crimson Tide had a long week. Seven days filled with doubt, disgust and uncharacteristic angst. But a week after Alabama lost at Texas A&M, Bryce Young threw for 348 yards and four touchdowns and the No. 5 Crimson Tide rebounded to to rout Mississippi State 49-9 on Saturday night. Alabama (6-1, 3-1 Southeastern Conference) had 543 yards of total offense and the Crimson Tide had seven sacks. Alabama converted 12 of 16 third-down opportunities. "I was really, really proud of the way our players competed," Saban said. "We played a 60-minute game, and sort of dominated in the game. That's the way we like to play, and it's the way you want to play on the road." Mississippi State (3-3, 1-2) had 24 first downs but managed only 299 total yards and had three turnovers. Mike Leach's team finished with minus-1 yards rushing.

Alabama scored first against the Bulldogs and never trailed, leading 21-6 at the half. On the opening play of the third quarter, Young shaved the baby to hit Jameson Williams for a 75-yard touchdown strike and the rout was on. "This is really the first time all year that we really have done this the way we'd like to do it," Saban said. Roydell Williams ran for 78 yards. Brian Robinson Jr. rushed for 73 yards and two touchdowns and caught five passes for 68 yards and another touchdown. John Metchie had seven catches for 117 yards and a touchdown. Traseshon Holden also caught a touchdown pass. "We have some dynamic guys," Young said. "My job is just to find a way to get them the ball, and to try to get them the ball in a place where they can run and be special after (the catch). I think all of them did that tonight." Safety Jordan Battle had two of the Tide's three interceptions. - Alabama/AP College Football

Jameson Williams was off to the races the first time he touched the ball, and the second, and the fourth. Unstoppable? Maybe. Uncatchable? Definitely. Williams, the Ohio State transfer who brought another speedy playmaker to Tuscaloosa, had three monster plays. He opened the game with a 100-yard kickoff return, then added an 81-yard touchdown catch on his second touch and another 83-yard runback in the top-ranked Crimson Tide's 63-14 win over Southern Miss on Saturday night. "My strategy, every time I get the ball, I'm trying to go to the crib," Williams said after becoming the first Tide player with two kick return TDs in a game.

Williams and the Crimson Tide (4-0) needed just 14 seconds to put to rest any worries of a letdown against Southern Miss (1-3) after a close win over No. 11 Florida and with No. 13 Mississippi on deck. Bryce Young was nearly flawless in throwing for five touchdowns while completing 20 of 22 passes for 313 yards. Williams, meanwhile, had 258 all-purpose yards on just four touches. "I call guys like him...he's a dog," Alabama coach Nick Saban said. "He loves playing. He plays hard. He plays fast, and he's got great speed. "And I think that's one of the things that we loved about him in getting him here was he complemented our other guys because he gave us a great vertical threat." The performance was marred only by a third quarter interception - his first of the season - at the goal line when the ball bounced off Williams, who was unstoppable when he caught the ball. It was business as usual for 'Bama, win No. 100 in a row over unranked opponents and plenty of playing time for the backups. Just add in a trio of huge plays from the speedster Williams. - Alabama/AP College Football

From Henry Ruggs to Jaylen Waddle, Alabama's high-powered passing game of the past few years had track speed at wideout. They demanded respect from opposing defenses who always ran the threat of someone getting behind the safeties, and when that happened, touchdown. Both Ruggs and Waddle were first-round picks in each of the last two NFL drafts so Nick Saban found someone with high-end speed in the transfer portal. Jameson Williams was leaving Ohio State after two seasons and just days after announcing that departure, he had committed to Alabama. And he's quick. Coming out of high school in St. Louis, his personal record in the 100 meters (10.54 seconds) was right there in the range of Ruggs' high school best of 10.53 seconds. Williams' was also a three-time state champion in the 300 hurdles with a state-record time that broke the previous mark set by Dallas Cowboy Ezekiel Elliott.

Saban noted that speed Wednesday evening but he explained his addition had benefits beyond that. "You can tell he's an experienced player," Saban said. "He's played at a high level against good competition. And he's very bright. So he's picked up on things and learned the offense very quickly. So we're encouraged with what he's done, and I'm sure he's going to make a really positive contribution to our team." Saban also went as far to say Williams would be a "featured guy in some ways." - Birmingham News

When Williams committed to Alabama Monday morning, the Missouri native and former top-100 recruit was just five days removed from entering the NCAA transfer portal at Ohio State. Tide wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins, a former college teammate of Gregory at New Mexico, made contact after Williams went into the portal and helped the Crimson Tide beat out Georgia, Texas A&M and others to land the commitment. "It was one of them things: If I go in the portal, I want to entertain A, B, C and Alabama was one of the A, B, Cs," Gregory said. "... He's going to play for somebody that his high school coach knows. Dad originally wanted him to go to 'Bama. And then, on top of Ohio State being No. 1, Alabama was kind of 1A, 1B. So two years later to still have that opportunity… He was listening to some of the other schools too, but I kind of knew in my heart that it was going to be Alabama."

Before Monday, the Tide only had two wide receivers who recorded more than three catches last year. Now, Alabama has another receiver with starting experience, a whole bunch more speed for its new quarterback Bryce Young and - as DeVonta Smith can attest to - someone who's capable of contributing on special teams if need be as well. "He didn't leave Ohio State just because he wants the ball all the time," Gregory said. "He's a team-first guy. But at the end of the day, he just wanted to go somewhere where he can be more productive and help a team in more ways." - Birmingham News

Jameson Williams is leaving one 2020 national championship game participant for the other. The former Ohio State receiver announced Monday morning on Twitter that he will transfer to Alabama. Williams, who played two seasons for the Buckeyes, entered the portal about a week ago. Due to new NCAA transfer rules, Williams can play for Alabama this fall. Previously, undergraduate transfers had to sit out one year unless they received a waiver.

Williams started for Ohio State last season, but it became clear this spring that would no longer be the case in 2021. Garrett Wilson shifted back outside along with Chris Olave to make room for Jaxon Smith-Njigba in the slot. That would have left Williams to contend for second-string snaps with redshirt freshman Julian Fleming and true freshman Marvin Harrison Jr., who had an impressive spring. Alabama lost two receivers to the first round of the NFL Draft: Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle. It returns John Metchie and Slade Bolden, who started when Waddle was out most of the season with injury. Williams now slides in with a bunch of other talented but less proven players vying for playing time. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

The Tuscaloosa gateway to the transfer portal has been more of an on-ramp - more of an exporter than an importer. That changed, at least for the moment, Monday when Jameson Williams took the T-town exit after leaving Ohio State. It was a move that made sense for both sides, especially given the transfer rule recently passed by the NCAA. For Alabama, its receivers room lost its two most talented and experienced stars in DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle. Slade Bolden was the lone receiver with serious experience who played on A-Day as he returns for a fourth fall at Alabama. John Metchie will be back this fall after missing the spring with an injury and there's certainly some young talent flashing potential.

Williams, once the top-rated recruit in Missouri and No. 13 receiver nationally, brings two years of Big Ten experience to Alabama. He's known as a speed burner and that should come as no surprise to the Crimson Tide coaching staff. Though he caught just one pass for 14 yards in the CFP title game, Williams lit up DeVonta Smith right as he hauled in the first punt of the night. He also brings impressive height at 6-foot-2 and 188 pounds. It would also be fair to say he's leaving a more crowded depth chart in Columbus to transfer south. The return of Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson, former five-star Jaxon Smith Njigba and the emergence of freshman Marvin Harrison Jr. (you don't have to google it) this spring probably meant he'd be facing more seasoned competition at Ohio State than Alabama. - Birmingham News

Jameson Williams became the latest Ohio State football receiver to look elsewhere for an opportunity. Cleveland.com confirmed that Williams, a starter throughout the 2020 season, has entered the transfer portal. Matt Zenitz of al.com first reported the development on Wednesday. Williams was the third receiver behind Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave in 2020. Despite playing all eight games, he totaled just 154 yards and two touchdowns on nine receptions. His role was expected to decrease in 2021, as Jaxon Smith-Njigba is projected to start in the slot. That left Williams contending for second string snaps outside with freshman Marvin Harrison Jr. - coming off an impressive spring as an early enrollee - and redshirt freshman Julian Fleming. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Ohio State football fans caught a brief glimpse of Jameson Williams as a freshman in 2019. Brief because he played sparingly behind the main rotation. Yet also brief because the St. Louis native's greatest asset - his speed - definitely played at this level. Williams turned one of his six receptions into a 61 yard touchdown. It was the second time he had done an Ezekiel Elliott impression, the first being when he broke the former Buckeye star's Missouri high school record in the 300 hurdles. That speed helped Williams earn a place in the OSU receivers room.

To crack the rotation, he needs to prove himself as a complete receiver in the ongoing preseason. "I feel like I've been a lot more focused and got a whole lot better in everything - in the classroom, on the field," Williams said. "...I feel like it will all come together soon and show during the season." Williams came to Ohio State as a top-100 national recruit and the second major recruiting hit for the receiver room along with Garrett Wilson. Yet with Wilson immediately carving out a spot among the Buckeyes' top five receivers and four top-100 talents coming in with the 2020 class, Williams became somewhat overlooked by the time spring practices began. - Cleveland Plain Dealer
