Winning with tough defense has been BYU's path to success this season. The 25th-ranked Cougars proved they still know how to light up a scoreboard. BYU outlasted Virginia 66-49 on Saturday night in a game in which the teams combined for 1,322 yards and 115 points. The Cougars got career-best performances from Tyler Allgeier and Jaren Hall to secure their fifth victory over a Power 5 opponent this season. Allgeier rushed for a career-high 266 yards and five touchdowns. Hall threw for a career-high 349 yards and three scores. He also ran for 42 yards and another TD. "Defensive coaches don't really like this game, but it felt like an old-school BYU type of game," Cougars coach Kalani Sitake said. BYU (7-2) pulled away after scoring 21 points off three turnovers.

Virginia kept pace behind a strong all-around performance from Brennan Armstrong. He threw for 337 yards and four touchdowns, and also tossed a pair of interceptions. Armstrong added 94 yards and two TDs on 11 carries. He left late in the fourth quarter after sustaining an apparent rib injury. The loss snapped the Cavaliers' (6-3, 4-2 ACC) four-game winning streak. "We didn't make enough plays to win today," Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "A couple of turnovers ended up being the difference in the game, as it ended up being score for score for score." The Cougars were mired in a shootout with Virginia until forcing back-to-back turnovers in the fourth quarter. - BYU/AP College Football

Tyler Allgeier ran for 191 yards and two touchdowns and BYU beat Washington State 21-19 on Saturday in Washington State's first game since head coach Nick Rolovich was fired for refusing to get a COVID-19 vaccination. Rolovich and four assistants were fired Monday for not complying with the governor's mandate that all state employees be vaccinated against the coronavirus. Rolovich had requested a religious exemption that was denied Monday, the state's vaccination deadline. He was replaced for the remainder of the season by Jake Dickert, the defensive coordinator who was elevated to acting head coach. "Our guys had a lot of heart," Dickert said, praising his team's "effort and commitment." "I know it's been a tough week," Dickert, in his first college game ever as a head coach, said. "It's a little bit learning on the fly. I felt it was really smooth. For the most part we operated as a staff." Asked what it was like to be a head coach, Dickert said he had to take a breath and remember to enjoy the experience. "I'll never forget it," he said. "It was a dream come true." Washington State was were undone by several offensive holding penalties that wiped out good gains, and two failed conversion attempts after touchdowns. "That put us behind the eight-ball," Dickert said. Max Borghi scored three touchdowns for Washington State (4-4), which saw its three-game winning streak end. Jaren Hall threw for 143 yards for BYU (6-2), which fell out of the Top 25 this week after losing two straight games. - BYU/AP College Football

Tyler Allgeier ran for a career-high 208 yards and three touchdowns to help No. 13 BYU beat Utah State 34-20 on Friday night. BYU (5-0) beat Utah State (3-2) for the second straight time in the Battle for the Old Wagon Wheel rivalry series. Baylor Romney threw for 187 yards and a touchdown on 15-of-19 passing in the first half, but was injured just before halftime and sat out the second half. He made his second consecutive start with Jaren Hall sidelined because of a rib injury.

Third-string quarterback Jacob Conover led the offense after halftime. The freshman threw for 45 yards on 5-of-9 passing in his college debut. Logan Bonner threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns for the Aggies. Bonner left with eight minutes to go because of a knee injury. The Cougars scored on their first four drives and averaged 9.1 yards per play before halftime. Romney completed his first eight passes, and Allgeier nearly eclipsed 100 rushing yards before halftime. - BYU/AP College Football

Last season, Allgeier rushed for 1,130 yards and 13 touchdowns. It was the first single-season 1,000-yard rushing performance by a Cougar since Jamaal Williams last did so in 2016. Allgeier's breakout rushing performance came a year after the Fontana, Calif., native had split roles as linebacker, running back and kick returner. Now, fully focused on the running back position, and after last season's performance, Allgeier is looking to run away with the role of RB1. However, Allgeier - who has already made two preseason watchlists - won't have to do everything alone. Running backs coach Harvey Unga said he plans to use a full supporting cast on the run game.

He's just not sure how many players, exactly, he'll use. "Whoever's healthy; It's hard to say," Unga said. "You know last year, when we started out the season, we had a guy like Lopini Katoa who could do everything and was your veteran back. And then a new up and coming kid like Tyler Allgeir, who showcased that he belonged there, too. It was hard to figure all that out, but as the season went on, guys kind of showcased different abilities, different strengths, different weaknesses and from there coach Grimes and ARod did a good job of figuring out who fit where and when we were going to use them. I guess it's a collective decision." - Salt Lake Tribune

The Maxwell Football Club today announced its watch list for the 85th Maxwell Award presented annually to the outstanding player in college football, naming BYU running back Tyler Allgeier to its list of the nation's top players in 2021. Allgeier is one of 80 players recognized on the annual Maxwell Award watch list, which incorporates a broad spectrum of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) programs and conferences from coast to coast. The list features six returning semifinalists from 2020, including Desmond Ridder (Cincinnati), Grayson McCall (Coastal Carolina), Breece Hall (Iowa State), D'Eriq King (Miami), Sam Howell (North Carolina), and Dillon Gabriel (UCF).

Allgeier, a sophomore in eligibility after last year's Covid season, burst onto the national scene in 2020 in his first year as a starter at running back for BYU, rushing for 1,130 yards to rank No. 8 in the nation and No. 1 among players with 150 attempts or less. One of 14 sophomores named to the watch list, Allgeier received 2020 Phil Steele All-America honorable mention after helping BYU go 11-1 and finish ranked No. 11 last season. The 5-11, 220-pound back ranked No. 3 nationally for the most runs of 30 or more yards while averaging 7.53 yards per carry, which was No. 7 in the country and tops among all sophomores. - Daily Herald

BYU has started the 2020 season 4-0, which is the first 4-0 start since the 2014 season. The Cougars have not started 5-0 since the 2008 season when they won their first six games of the year. This is also the best start under head coach Kalani Sitake. The previous best was in 2018 when BYU started 3-1. BYU had a 100-yard rusher and 100-yard receiver for the second time this season. Wide receiver Dax Milne had seven catches for 102 receiving yards against the Roadrunners, while Tyler Allgeier ended up with 116 yards on 19 carries with a touchdown. - Daily Herald

Tyler Allgeier ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns, and BYU put the clamps on Navy's usually potent triple option in a season-opening 55-3 rout Monday night inside an eerily empty stadium at the Naval Academy. The Cougars scored touchdowns on each of their first two possessions, led 31-0 at halftime and coasted to their most lopsided victory since a 70-6 blowout of Wagner in October 2015. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the event had none of the pageantry and atmosphere usually associated with a football game at Navy. There were no lavish tailgates in the parking lot, no flyover before the opening kickoff, the Brigade of Midshipmen was not allowed in the stadium and the 34,000 seats remained vacant due to restrictions ordered by the state of Maryland.

It took some doing to make this game happen. The Midshipmen were originally scheduled to open against Notre Dame and the Cougars were supposed to play Utah, but both those games got scrapped. So the athletic directors of Navy and BYU arranged this matchup, which marked the first time since 1989 these schools played each other. With no one in the stands and no cheerleaders on the sideline, all the noise was made by the players - especially those in front of the Cougars bench. The offense yelled when the defense repeatedly stuffed Navy's bid to move the ball, and the defense roared as Allgeier, Lopini Katoa and quarterback Zach Wilson moved downfield at will. Allgeier averaged 9.4 yards per carry, Katoa ran for 80 yards and scored twice, and Wilson went 13 for 18 for 232 yards with two touchdowns before leaving in the third quarter. - BYU/AP College Football
