JaChai Baker, South Alabama, Player News

South Alabama held its fourth preseason football practice on Monday morning at the Jaguar Training Center, and several newcomers are beginning to make their presence known. Chief among those is offensive lineman Ja'Chai Baker, who took virtually every rep during 11-on-11 team drills as the first-team left tackle. An all-conference pick on the FCS level at Southeast Missouri last season, the 6-foot-6, 310-pound Baker (whose first name is pronounced "Juh-KYE") hasn't yet won a job outright, head coach Kane Wommack said, but has made excellent progress through the first week of camp. "We're starting to make some moves on the offensive line," Wommack said. "Obviously we've brought some of these transfer guys in here and we need to see them working with different people. Some of the guys that were here in the spring, certainly they're going to have a little bit more experience in terms of what we're doing and the communication level. I want to see kind of how they interact with different people, but I thought Ja'Chai has been doing a good job. And so he deserves some (first-team) reps." - Birmingham News

South Alabama dipped into the FCS ranks for an offensive line transfer on Tuesday, getting a commitment from tackle Ja'Chai Baker of Southeast Missouri. The 6-foot-6, 314-pound Baker played in 19 games for the Redhawks the last two seasons, starting 14 at left tackle. SEMO, a member of the Ohio Valley Conference, completed its 2020-21 season on April 11. Baker, originally from Omaha, Neb., began his college career as a defensive tackle at Wyoming in 2016. He transferred a year later to Iowa Western Community College, where he moved to offensive tackle and was a second-team all-conference pick in 2018, before signing with SEMO.

Baker was a fifth-year senior in 2020, but will have one season remaining at South Alabama. The NCAA granted an additional year of eligibility to all Division I athletes amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Baker joins a South Alabama offensive line transfer class that also includes Antawn Lewis (Louisiana Tech), James Jackson (Mississippi State), Anterrious Gray (North Texas) and Justin Stevens (Michigan State). Lewis enrolled in January and finished spring practice as the starter at right tackle. - Birmingham News
