Sam Howell, North Carolina, Player News

  01/01/22 - QB Sam HowellJr/2022, North Carolina, 6-1, 224 (DS#5 QB) + More +

North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell is forgoing his senior season to enter the NFL draft. Howell's decision was not surprising, but he made it official Saturday with a video posted on North Carolina football's official Twitter account. He is considered a potential first-round draft pick. The junior will leave college as North Carolina's most prolific quarterback, with career records in yards passing (10,283) and total offense (11,292). The 6-foot-1, 220 pounder from Indiana Trail, North Carolina, was a blue-chip recruit out of high school who changed his mind late and signed with the Tar Heels and coach Mack Brown instead of Florid State. Howell thanked teammates, coaches, North Carolina fans and God during his goodbye video. "I'll forever be grateful for my time here at Carolina and for all the people who made it so special," Howell said. - AP College Football

North Carolina coach Mack Brown tried to bring clarity on Sam Howell's future, where there's still some confusion, while speaking Wednesday about the Tar Heels' invitation to the Duke's Mayo Bowl in Charlotte. Howell, a junior quarterback, will be playing in the game against South Carolina on Dec. 30 in Bank of America Stadium. What is still somewhat unclear is if it will be the last game in a UNC uniform for Howell before he embarks on an NFL career. "I'm really excited about Sam Howell playing and all he's accomplished and what he's done," Brown said. "This could be his last game. He hasn't told us for sure yet." That's the part that has some Carolina fans wondering if Howell is open to the possibility of returning for his senior season.

He participated in Senior Day activities during the Heels' win over Wofford 34-14 on Nov. 20. But even that week before the game, Howell said he hadn't made a decision about his future. His reasoning for being involved with Senior Day was because he will complete his undergraduate degree this semester. Brown is still proceeding as if Howell is going to leave. Brown has been saying since last season that Howell would leave for the NFL after this season because his draft stock is so high. "He's going to be a first-round draft choice in my estimation," Brown said. "His family is getting information just like all the other guys to make that decision. Normally, we've told our guys if you're a first-rounder, go, but he doesn't want to be a distraction for the team." - Raleigh News Observer

Playing without quarterback Sam Howell, North Carolina ran for 305 yards to beat Wofford 34-14 on Saturday, becoming bowl eligible in the process. Howell, who was a game-time decision, missed the first game of his career due to an upper-body injury suffered against No. 20 Pittsburgh last week. Jacolby Criswell started for the Tar Heels and threw for 125 yards, adding 66 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Freshman Drake Maye took over after halftime and finished with 89 yards. The Tar Heels (6-5, 3-4 ACC) never trailed in a Senior Day win where they held the Terriers (1-10, 0-8 Southern Conference) to 242 total yards and rode a ground game that scored three times. British Brooks led the Tar Heel rushing attack with 89 yards and two touchdowns, while Ty Chandler added 78 yards. Saturday might have marked a home finale for Howell, a junior and top NFL prospect who participated in the team's Senior Day festivities. Terrier quarterback Peyton Derrick finished with 37 passing yards and 69 rushing yards. - North Carolina/AP College Football

North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell is dealing with an upper-body injury that could sideline him for what coach Mack Brown said will be his final home game Saturday against Wofford. Team spokesman Jeremy Sharpe said Monday that Howell is considered day-to-day with an injury to his non-throwing side after last week's overtime loss at Pittsburgh and would be a gametime decision. Brown later said Howell would spend the week working with team doctors and it was unclear how much he might practice, though the junior is expected to be ready for the regular-season finale at 25th-ranked rival North Carolina State on Nov. 26. "He wants to play Saturday," Brown said. "If he can, he will." Brown had said in preseason that the team was treating this year as though it would be the last for Howell, who has started every game for the Tar Heels dating to his time as a true freshman during Brown's second tenure in Chapel Hill.

Howell has gone on to set the program's career records for passing yardage, passing touchdowns, touchdown responsibility and total offense while making himself a high NFL draft prospect. "I haven't thought Sam was coming back since last year," Brown said. "I have never had one thought about him coming back, and he's going to be a first-round draft choice. So I think he should leave." Howell has never missed a college game and has thrown at least one touchdown pass in every one. He currently is seventh in the Bowl Subdivision ranks in total offense (343 yards per game) thanks to an expanded running game that has seen him have six games with at least 98 yards rushing. But he's taken a beating this year behind a veteran offensive line that has struggled with injuries at center and inconsistency. UNC has surrendered 39 sacks, tied with Tennessee for the most allowed by any power-conference team. - AP College Football

Sam Howell threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more as North Carolina held off Miami 45-42, sending the Hurricanes to their worst record at the midway mark of a season in more than two decades. Miami was in position to tie or win when reaching the North Carolina 16-yard line in the final minute, but linebacker Cedric Gray intercepted a tipped pass with 6 seconds left. "It's like a roller-coaster. When you hop on it, you feel like you're in good shape and then you go back down and come back (up)," North Carolina coach Mack Brown said. "One thing this team hasn't done this year is won a tough game at the end." Ty Chandler ran for two touchdowns for the Tar Heels (4-3, 3-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) in a matchup of two teams that began the season in the Top 15, but are trying to gain traction midway through the season.

The Hurricanes (2-4, 0-2) are 2-4 for the first time since 1997 when they were on NCAA probation and stuck with scholarship limitations. "I'm proud of the way these guys fight. I know that (another win) is coming," Miami coach Manny Diaz said. "There's a really good team in that locker room. We don't have a good record." Howell was 17 for 26 for 154 yards in the air with an interception while running for 98 yards on 17 carries. Chandler gained 104 yards on the ground on 18 attempts. Howell's touchdown runs covered 30 and 11 yards, both times pinballing off Miami defenders. "A couple of times he just ran through arms and twisted and went in to score," Brown said. - North Carolina/AP College Football

Sam Howell threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns and North Carolina topped Duke 38-7 on Saturday, keeping hold of the coveted Victory Bell for a third straight year. The Tar Heels (3-2, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) jumped ahead with a pair of explosive plays in the first half. Howell connected with running back Ty Chandler down the sideline for a 75-yard score to open the scoring. Less than two minutes later, Kevin Hester hit Duke's Gunnar Holmberg as he was throwing, causing the ball to flutter out of his hand and Trey Morrison returned the fumble 63 yards for a touchdown. Allowing the scoop-and-score epitomized a frustrating performance for Duke (3-2, 0-1 ACC). The Blue Devils punted nine times, turned the ball over twice and converted just 2 of 15 third downs. Duke scored its lone points on an 80-yard catch-and-run by Jalon Calhoun in the third quarter. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Blue Devils. - North Carolina/AP College Football

Sam Howell threw five touchdown passes and ran for a career-best 112 yards as No. 21 North Carolina took over after halftime to beat Virginia 59-39 on Saturday night. The Tar Heels (2-1, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) scored touchdowns on all five of their second-half drives, which helped turn a 28-24 halftime deficit into a 52-31 lead on Howell's short TD throw to Kamari Morales with 12:13 left. And after a first-half shootout with Brennan Armstrong and the Cavaliers (2-1, 0-1), UNC gave up only a field goal in the third quarter while also coming up with Ja'Qurious Conley's interception. That was more than enough help for the Tar Heels' offense, which kept ending drives with with end-zone celebrations to speed back out in front after squandering a 24-7 first-half lead. And there were no shortage of offensive stars.

Tennessee graduate transfer Ty Chandler ran for a career-high 198 yards with two touchdowns, the last coming from 7 yards out with 2:57 left to seal it. And Josh Downs had eight catches for 203 yards and a pair of TDs. Perhaps more impressively, the Tar Heels showed a different dimension by leaning on their ground game instead of putting everything on Howell's arm. The result? The Tar Heels ran 47 times for 392 yards compared to just 21 pass attempts for their star quarterback, and finished with 699 total yards. It was UNC's biggest scoring output against Virginia since 1936 in the long-running series and second-most ever. - North Carolina/AP College Football

Sam Howell's reputation has largely been built on what he does throwing the football for No. 24 North Carolina. His footwork carrying the ball drew most of the attention Saturday night. Howell scored on two rushes to go with three touchdown throws as the Tar Heels beat Georgia State 59-17, shaking off the disappointment of an opening-game defeat. "I definitely think I have a lot of value in the running game," said Howell, a junior who's the school record-holder for touchdown passes. The most notable run was a career-long 62-yarder for a TD in the waning seconds of the third quarter. "I was real tired," Howell said. "When I was running, I was thinking, ‘Someone hasn't caught me from behind yet?' " Everyone seemed to notice. Coach Mack Brown said the staff needed to have oxygen ready for Howell on the sideline "because he had never run so far." Georgia State coach Shawn Elliott wasn't as amused. "Some of his runs there, he didn't do anything spectacular," Elliott said. "We're just not containing." Howell played a role in five of the Tar Heels' first seven touchdowns.

He completed 21 of 29 passes for 352 yards without an interception. He was picked off three times in a 17-10 setback at Virginia Tech in the team's opener a week earlier. "(It can be) a reality check," Howell said. "Go back to work and that's what we did. … We were able to come out there in the second half and play Carolina football." Howell was the game's leading rusher with 104 yards on 11 carries. His 22-yard scramble produced the game's first points. Georgia State (0-2) was held to 90 passing yards. Quarterback Cornelious Brown IV was12 for 26 for 68 yards. North Carolina's lead was 24-10 midway through the third quarter, before the Tar Heels (1-1) used a 28-point burst in about 9 1/2 minutes. - North Carolina/AP College Football

The USA Today Sports AFCA Coaches Poll ranked North Carolina No. 9 in its preseason football Top 25 poll released on Tuesday. It marked the highest preseason ranking since the the Tar Heels were ranked seventh to start the last season of coach Mack Brown's first tenure in Chapel Hill in 1997. Alabama was the overwhelming pick for No. 1, receiving 63 of 65 votes. Oklahoma, which was ranked No. 3, received the other two first place votes. Clemson (No. 2) and Miami (No. 16) were the only other ACC teams ranked. UNC will travel to play at No. 7 Notre Dame, which, along with the Hurricanes, is the only scheduled game against a team ranked in the poll.

News of the ranking didn't evoke much of a reaction from the Tar Heel players who spoke with the media in Tuesday's scheduled interviews after practice. "I know we have the talent to be in the top 10, I know we should be in the top 10 or higher," junior receiver Emery Simmons said. "We've got so many non-believers who don't believe in us that we should be there. It's like an 'if' factor with us. As a team we know there's an 'if' factor with other people on like social media so we're just trying to keep our head down and work." Brown has repeatedly stated that his team didn't know how to handle being ranked No. 5 last season and it showed in their loss at Florida State. But junior safety Giovanni Biggers said the Heels were better equipped to handle the expectations for this season. - Raleigh News Observer

Good luck getting a rise out of North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell. The likelihood of it being his final season in Chapel Hill before being drafted in the NFL doesn't do it for him. He's never publicly declared he won't return for a senior season. Potentially making a six-figure salary this year thanks to the passage of college athletes being able to profit from their name, image and likeness doesn't quicken his pulse either. He siphoned that off to a marketing firm to handle for him with an emphasis on opportunities for the entire team to make money. Howell barely raises an eyebrow despite having his name thrown around in Heisman Trophy conversations. Part of the reason UNC isn't conducting a huge campaign for him is because Howell isn't interested in them doing so. "There are a lot of distractions, so what I've been trying to do is make sure I have people in place around me to kind of limit those distractions so when the season starts I can focus 100 percent on my team," Howell said at Wednesday's ACC Kickoff. "… I just want as much weight lifted off my shoulders as possible so I can really focus on football."

Those outside things almost seem boring to Howell, who spoke in such a low tone during his time on a dais it caused reporters to sometimes cut off his answers because they thought he was finished speaking. The one change UNC coach Mack Brown has noticed? Howell's body language when he's asked to give up some reps to the backup quarterbacks. "He's disappointed when we take him out," Brown said. "He's so competitive he wants to stay in there, but I told him, 'You're leaving, we've got to get a quarterback ready." - Raleigh News Observer

The unofficial Sam Howell campaign for the Heisman Trophy kicks off Wednesday in Charlotte at the ACC's annual two-day media event, where the North Carolina quarterback will be as much the center of attention as any other player or even new commissioner Jim Phillips. To bolster Howell's candidacy for the award - Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler is the betting favorite, but Howell's right there with him - the university has prepared a massive publicity campaign consisting of: almost nothing. No posters, no notebooks, no billboards, no bobbleheads, no gifts, no gimmicks. If Howell wins the Heisman, he'll do it on his own. Which is exactly how both the quarterback and Mack Brown want it.

"Just as we did with Ricky Williams at Texas, we consider this a team award," Brown said earlier this month. "If we do well, Sam will do well." There are two subtle messages buried within that absence of messaging, one about Howell and one about the Tar Heels. Just as Howell has signed with an agent to handle any endorsement deals but has yet to actually sign any, a Heisman publicity campaign isn't really his style. Despite being the focus of the team for two seasons and a national star going into his third, he hasn't exactly embraced the public spotlight, although he certainly hasn't shied away either. He's done most of his talking on the field. The same will be said of his Heisman candidacy. There's nothing surprising or unusual about that. If anything, the Tar Heels' low-key approach to Howell's award chances says more about them. - Raleigh News Observer

North Carolina coach Mack Brown isn't worried about the hype from a Heisman Trophy campaign becoming a distraction for quarterback Sam Howell. Brown was a guest on the Charlotte Observer's Talking Preps show Monday and covered everything from his use of emojis in text messages to the difficulty of recruiting in a pandemic. He reserved some of his highest praise for Howell, who has started every game the past two seasons for the Tar Heels. Carolina has begun in earnest touting Howell as a potential Heisman Trophy candidate, which Brown said he's very much behind.

"Some people are worried about Sam, going into his junior year, trying too hard," Brown said. "He will probably be a top round (NFL) draft choice next year and definitely right now considered a top Heisman candidate. But that he's not built that way. He's not going to worry about publicity. He wants to play and he wants to win." Howell led the ACC with 30 touchdown passes and 3,586 passing yards, which ranked sixth and fourth nationally, respectively. He's already tied the school record for career touchdown passes with 68, which is the most through a sophomore year in ACC history. And Howell still has never thrown a fourth-quarter interception. - Raleigh News Observer

Since quarterback Sam Howell arrived at North Carolina, the fourth quarter has always been when the magic happened. From his first collegiate start as a freshman last season when he led a 15-point rally against South Carolina, to last game out against Wake Forest when he helped produced 28 points in the final period to complete a 21-point comeback, the Tar Heels never feel out of a game when Howell's under center. North Carolina entered Friday's game against Notre Dame with a 133-point differential in fourth quarter scoring margin under Howell's guidance the past two seasons, which leads the entire Football Bowl Subdivision. Appalachian State was the next closest team with an 84-point margin.

So why couldn't Howell rally the No. 25 Tar Heels after trailing just by seven entering the fourth during their 31-17 loss to No. 2 Notre Dame on Friday? UNC coach Mack Brown was upfront about the answer. "You see it, I saw it, looked like they whipped us upfront," Brown said in his postgame video conference. "They got too much pressure on Sam, (he) didn't have enough time to get the ball to the guys. And we knew that was an issue." No amount of trick plays or bubble screens or flat passes could disguise how Notre Dame's defensive front dominated the line of scrimmage. Carolina ran a total of 14 plays on three possessions in the fourth quarter and gained a total of just 20 yards. - Raleigh News Observer

Behind only UCF's Dillon Gabriel (3,017), SMU's Shane Buechele (2,781) and BYU's Zach Wilson (2,724), Howell has the fourth-most passing yards in the country (2,631). He also ties for No. 4 in passing touchdowns (23). Irish head coach Brian Kelly said this week that Howell has the best deep ball in the country. Howell continuing to stretch the field vertically will be a key to exploiting Notre Dame's formidable defense. If Howell kept the Irish defense honest through the air, dynamic running backs Javonte Williams (120 carries for 868 yards and 15 touchdowns) and Michael Carter (116 attempts for 807 yards and four scores) will have better opportunities. - South Bend Tribune

Sam Howell threw for program records of 550 yards and six touchdowns, and scored the go-ahead rushing TD with 4:11 left to help North Carolina rally past Wake Forest 59-53 on Saturday. Howell's 20-yard keeper capped a comeback from 21 down midway through the third quarter for the Tar Heels (6-2, 6-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), tying the program record for biggest comeback in a win. That was part of a run of 35 unanswered points after falling behind 45-24, with Howell and the Tar Heels' offense rolling nearly all day at a record-setting pace.

UNC finished with a program-record 742 yards, highlighted by huge performances from receivers Dazz Newsome (10 catches for 189 yards) and Dyami Brown (eight catches for 163 yards) as each hauled in two of Howell's scoring throws. Javonte Williams added a 15-yard touchdown run with 2:39 left that helped keep UNC in control late. Sam Hartman threw for a career-best 429 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Demon Deacons (4-3, 3-3), who had their own huge offensive output with 606 yards. - AP College Football

Saturday's Duke-UNC game was over early, but ESPN sparked a little debate when it posted a graphic early in the second half with UNC leading 49-17. The Tar Heels won 56-24. The graphic compared UNC quarterback Sam Howell and Clemson's Trevor Lawrence through their first 19 college football starts. The announcers said Howell compared favorably to Lawrence, the presumptive No. 1 NFL Draft pick next year, though going onto compare Howell more to New Orleans' Drew Brees, who is closer to Howell's height. Howell ultimately finished the game, completing 18-of-27 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns. He rank seven times for 35 yards and another score. - Raleigh News Observer

What's about to take place in Chapel Hill next Saturday is so rare none of the players involved were born the last time it happened. Back in 1993, both UNC and N.C. State were ranked in the top 25 when they met on the football field. The Tar Heels were 18 in the land, the Wolfpack No. 19. Like 2020, Mack Brown roamed the sidelines for UNC, but that's the one common factor ahead of the latest installment in this heated rivalry. For the first time in 27 years, the Tar Heels and Wolfpack will meet head-to-head with both teams ranked in the AP top 25. After a 31-20 win over Duke on Saturday, N.C. State (4-1, 4-1) cracks the top 25 for the first time this season, coming in at No. 23. It's the first time the Wolfpack has been ranked since Nov. 8 of the 2018 campaign. The Tar Heels (3-1, 3-1) peaked out at No. 5 last week, but dropped to No. 14 after losing at Florida State Saturday night, 31-28. UNC fell behind 24-0 to the Seminoles, but battled back and had a chance to tie or take the lead on the final drive. The Tar Heels drove into FSU territory, but failed to convert on a 4th and 9 with 35 seconds remaining. - Raleigh News Observer

North Carolina jumped to No. 5 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 Poll released Sunday. It is the football program's best ranking since it was also fifth back in November 1997, which was coach Mack Brown's last year before he took over the job at Texas. "We've talked to the guys about, we need to buy a house in this neighborhood," Brown said in his Virginia Tech postgame video conference on Saturday. "We haven't been here much. We've been visiting the first couple of weeks in the top 10. That's who we want to be, but have we earned it yet?" The Tar Heels (3-0, 3-0 ACC) are fresh off a 56-45 win over then-No. 19 VT on Saturday. They jumped ahead three spots, passing Ohio State, which has yet to play a game; Florida, which lost at Texas A&M; and Miami, who lost to No. 1 Clemson. The Gators fell from fourth, the Buckeyes sixth, and the Hurricanes were seventh. UNC travels to face Florida State on Saturday, which ironically was the team it lost to back in '97 when it was last ranked at No. 5. The Seminoles are nothing like their predecessors from three decades ago. FSU (1-3, 0-3) has lost its three conference games by an average of 20 points. - Raleigh News Observer

Sam Howell threw for two touchdowns and Trey Morrison scored after intercepting the potential tying 2-point conversion with 45 seconds left on Saturday to lead No. 12 North Carolina to a 26-22 victory over Boston College. With the cancellation of one game because of the virus and a scheduled off week leaving North Carolina idle since Sept. 12, the Tar Heels (2-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) sent BC (2-1, 1-1) to its first loss under new coach Jeff Hafley. Howell completed 14 of 26 passes for 225 yards, including a 41-yard score to Javonte Williams that gave Carolina a 21-13 lead with just over a minute left in the first half. Williams ran for 57 yards and caught two passes for 56, and Michael Carter carried 16 times for 121 yards for the Tar Heels. UNC led 24-16 with just under six minutes left before Phil Jurkovec drove BC into Tar Heels territory and completed three passes in the end zone.

The first two were negated by penalties, but a 6-yard pass to C.J. Lewis made it a two-point game with 45 seconds left, with the 2-point conversion to come. Jurkovec scrambled and threw to the end zone, but Morrison picked him off and ran down the left sideline for the rare defensive 2-point conversion. Jurkovec completed 37 of 56 passes for 313 yards and two touchdowns, hitting tight end Hunter Long nine times for 96 yards. Boston College, which led the ACC in rushing last year behind A.J. Dillon's third straight 1,000-yard season, totaled just 40 yards rushing. - North Carolina/AP College Football

This time last season, Howell was the reason why no one really knew what to expect from the Heels. Now, heading into the season opener against Syracuse, Howell is the reason why so many around the nation expect so much from UNC. If Howell can avoid the dreaded sophomore slump, he should again compete with Lawrence to lead the ACC in passing yards. Howell fell just 25 yards short of doing so last season. Carolina hasn't had a quarterback lead the league in passing yards since Chris Keldorf did it with just 2,347 yards in 1996. - Raleigh News Observer

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said he is planning to introduce a bill Thursday that would require the NCAA to make rule changes regarding college athletes' ability to make money from their name, image and likeness and give the association protection from legal challenges to the new regulations. The NCAA has said it plans to loosen its rules pertaining to athletes' name, image and likeness, with the changes to be voted on at its annual convention in January 2021 and become effective at the start of the 2021-22 academic year.

According to a copy of the bill provided to USA TODAY Sports, Rubio's measure would force the NCAA to establish a new setup no later than June 30, 2021. "The only people on campus that are prohibited from benefiting from their name, their image and their likeness are student-athletes," Rubio said. "And that's just not a sustainable position...given the fact that many of these college athletic endeavors are now multi-billion-dollar industries that are generating a lot of revenue for corporate sponsors and for university programs. "This is not an effort to harm college athletics. Frankly, it's an effort to save it from what I think is going to become completely unmanageable if it's not handled uniformly across the board." - Austin American Statesman

If college football does resume next season, a successful season for Howell appears to be on the horizon, barring injuries. Next season, the Tar Heels are expected to return 10 of their 11 starters on offense, including all their top wide receivers. It will also be Howell second season in the same offense. Brown has said that he expects the playbook to open up next season with healthy backup quarterbacks. The Tar Heels were limited some in 2019 after redshirt freshman Jace Ruder injured his leg early in the year and missed the rest of the season. That meant Howell was the only scholarship quarterback available. As a result, UNC limited the number of run-pass option plays, and designed runs for Howell to prevent unnecessary injury.

UNC was not able to host spring practice or its spring game because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In an April interview, Howell said he's been watching a lot of film and working out with his personal trainer, former Duke quarterback Anthony Boone, in Charlotte. It's unclear when college sports will return. Brown said in an interview earlier this week that he and his staff are preparing as if they will return to work in June, although he and his staff have not been given any direction yet. - Raleigh News Observer

Freshman Sam Howell threw for 294 yards and three touchdowns in addition to catching a TD pass, and North Carolina blew out Temple 55-13 in the Military Bowl on Friday to cap a satisfying return season for coach Mack Brown. Howell completed 25 of 34 passes and ran for 53 yards on three carries to help the Tar Heels (7-6) secure their first bowl victory since 2013. North Carolina was 4-6 before winning its last two regular-season games to qualify for a bowl bid. Temple (8-5) has gone to a bowl game five years in a row - and lost four of them. This was the Owls' first trip under coach Rod Carey, who came to Temple after a run of six-plus seasons at Northern Illinois in which he was 0-6 in the postseason.

North Carolina went 3-9 in 2017 and 2-9 last year before hiring Brown, who coached the Tar Heels from 1988-97 prior to heading to Texas for a 16-year stay. Coming off a five-year absence from coaching, the 68-year-old Brown can attribute a portion of his success to securing Howell, a high school star in North Carolina who initially committed to Florida State. Closing out a sensational debut season at the college level, Howell threw a pair of touchdown passes before halftime to stake the Tar Heels to a 20-6 lead. UNC pulled away early in the third quarter by scoring two touchdowns in a 12-second span, the last on a 20-yard interception return by Storm Duck. Howell completed the third-quarter blitz by catching a 2-yard TD pass from wide receiver Rontavius Groves at the end of a razzle-dazzle reverse to make it 41-6. Howell threw 38 touchdown passes this season, most by a true freshman in FBS history. His 3,641 yards passing are an Atlantic Coast Conference record for a freshman who has not redshirted. - AP College Football

The 35 TD passes are the most by a true freshman in FBS history, are the second most by a freshman (true or redshirt) in ACC history, are tied for fourth on the ACC's single-season chart, and rank fourth nationally.   Sam Howell threw for three first-half scores to set a single-season record for the most TD throws by a true freshman in Bowl Subdivision history as North Carolina beat Mercer 56-7 in its home finale Saturday. Howell completed 10 of 13 passes for 152 yards and scores of 66, 4 and 33 yards in a dominating opening half for the Tar Heels (5-6). That gave him 32 TD throws on the year to surpass Trevor Lawrence's 30 for eventual national champion Clemson last year as the most by a true freshman in FBS history, according to Sportradar. Howell's TD total also broke the program's single-season record for any player (30) set by eventual No. 2 overall NFL draft pick Mitch Trubisky in 2016.

The Tar Heels scored touchdowns on their first six drives to lead 42-0 before the break, showing no trouble handling an overmatched Championship Subdivision opponent nor the cold and steady rain that lasted much of the way. "The afternoon and night was exactly what we needed," UNC coach Mack Brown said. "We dominated the game. Our guys were ready to play. They took the game over early. The game was over at halftime, so we got to play basically everybody who was eligible on our team, which helps morale. And we didn't get anybody hurt. So it was the perfect night for us." Michael Carter ran for 159 yards and three scores for UNC, including a 60-yarder on the first offensive snap after halftime. - North Carolina/AP College Football

Sam Howell has moved well past freshman-level studies at North Carolina. He is playing his way to the top of the class of Atlantic Coast Conference's quarterbacks. Howell leads the ACC with 20 touchdown passes after tying the North Carolina record with five in last week's 43-41, six-overtime loss to Virginia Tech. He passed for 348 yards with no interceptions and was named the conference's top quarterback of the week for the third time this season. For North Carolina offensive coordinator Phil Longo, it's more proof that Howell is no ordinary first-year quarterback. He said Howell is "beyond the 101 stage" of lessons.

"I mean, Sam, he studies the game, he cares, he's passionate about it," Longo said Monday. "That's all part of what makes him as good as he is right now, and we still have things we need to get better at. But I really like where the process is and I like the fact that he accepts just about every challenge I give him." Howell was a unanimous selection for the ACC's top freshman of the first half of the season in balloting by The Associated Press writers covering the conference. It was the only unanimous vote of nine categories. He has set a school record for touchdown passes by a freshman while throwing only three interceptions. He is a key to coach Mack Brown's rebuilding effort at North Carolina (3-4, 2-2 ACC) entering Saturday's game against Duke (4-3, 2-2). - AP College Football

Sam Howell threw four touchdown passes and North Carolina suffered no letdown from last week's narrow loss to the nation's No. 1 team, snapping a three-game losing streak with a 38-22 victory over Georgia Tech on Saturday. Howell, a freshman making his sixth career start, completed 33 of 51 passes for a career-high 376 yards as North Carolina piled up a season-high 587 yards of total offense and Javonte Williams ran 17 times for a career-high 138 yards and a TD. The Tar Heels (3-3, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) won the game convincingly, going up 24-7 early in the final period on Howell's 18-yard TD pass to Dyami Brown in the left corner of the end zone and 31-15 on the next possession when tight end Garrett Watson caught a short pass near the right sideline and scored a 16-yard touchdown.

Georgia Tech (1-4, 0-2) has lost three straight with the nation's lowest-scoring offense and had gone seven quarters without a touchdown before cutting the lead to 17-7 in the third quarter. Redshirt freshman James Graham made his first career start for the Yellow Jackets and shared early snaps with running QB Tobias Oliver. The offense took a big blow early in the second when Graham threw a deep interception to Don Chapman at the Tar Heel 32. North Carolina scored its first touchdown on the ensuing drive. North Carolina led 17-0 at halftime on Noah Ruggles' 32-yard field goal, Dazz Newsome's 20-yard touchdown catch and Beau Corrales' 6-yard TD reception. Outside linebacker Tomon Fox had a sack in the second and nose tackle Aaron Crawford had a sack in the third. - North Carolina/AP College Football

Mack Brown knew he needed to coax some confidence out of his North Carolina players after inheriting a team that frequently found a way to give up leads last season. Two games in, the Tar Heels are playing like they're free from that burden - fittingly led by the composed true freshman who isn't the least bit interested in experiencing any of that frustration. Sam Howell directed a clutch final drive and found Dazz Newsome just inside the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown with 1:01 left, lifting the Tar Heels to a second fourth-quarter comeback in as many weeks and a 28-25 win against Miami on Saturday night.

"I just have confidence in myself, I have confidence in this team," Howell said. "I have confidence in all 10 guys on the field with me. This is what we do." Howell's perfect throw found Newsome dragging his toes inches from the sideline from 10 yards out. That capped a stunning 75-yard march that included him hitting Rontavius Groves for 20 yards on a fourth-and-17 to keep the drive alive, which came only minutes after the Tar Heels had surrendered the lead on a late Miami touchdown. - AP College Football
