Smith is where the conversation at linebacker starts for Penn State because he has the best combination of talent and experience. The junior linebacker has appeared in 22 games through two seasons, including starting all nine games last season. He tallie d 37 total tackles, two sacks and an interception in those nine games and displayed the athleticism and instincts that made him a five-star recruit out of high school. He's most adept attacking the ball against both the pass and the run. Smith can rush t he passer, using his speed and explosion to burst through the offensive line from the second level, while also having the ability to take on blocker and separate to get by.He uses those same attributes to fill gaps and make tackles in the running game, although he does have a propensity for trying to make the big play. Sometimes it works, sometimes it results in missed tackles and assignments. His instincts can lead to big plays, but occasionally he over-pursues while hunting a big hit and can mi ss easy tackles. Not to mention, he sometimes fills the wrong gap in the running game at times, which allows opponents to hit the hole and make big plays of their own. With Parsons opting out of the season to focus on training for the 2021 NFL Draft, Smith's path to the starting role at Parsons' old strongside linebacker position cleared. The Nittany Lions won't be able to rely on Parsons' freakish athleticism anymore, but it doesn't mean they won't have a blue-chipper to replace him. That, coach James Franklin maintains, is why he's not worried about the state of a linebacking corps that lost all three starters. "We think we're in a good place," Franklin said. "You n ever want to lose players, but we feel like that's a position of strength."Penn State will likely surround Smith with veteran Jesse Luketa on the weak side and productive Ellis Brooks in the middle. But the Nittany Lions also have two other five-s tar recruits, redshirt freshman Lance Dixon and incoming prospect Curtis Jacobs, ready to go. Not to mention, highly regarded youngsters Zuriah Fisher, Charlie Katshir and Tyler Elsdon. But with a 6-foot-3, 244-pounder in Smith, Penn State hopes it can a t least minimize the effect of losing Parsons. "The sky's the limit with him," Brooks said. Smith has one of the highest ceilings of any defensive player on the Penn State roster. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound linebacker has elite size for the position and mixes it with athleticism and length to excel in all facets of linebacker play. He made a few b one-crunching plays in 2019 that excited fans, but the former five-star recruit has plenty more to show fans this season. He's talented and ready to break out after recording two tackles for loss in limited playing time last season. The true sophomore co uld be the next great linebacker at Penn State once Parsons leaves the room. He's an aggressive athlete who seeks out the ball against the run and the pass in a way that can remind fans of Parsons. Smith isn't the elite pass rusher his junior teammate is , but he has the upside to get there in the future. Comparing the two former five-star recruits increases the already high expectations for Smith, but there's enough on tape of Smith to give credence to the comparison. - Centre Times
